Thankful Thursdays 3/17

What are you thankful for this week?

I’ll start: Savannah has a huge St. Patrick’s Day celebration and instead of fighting the employee call outs and student absences, the school system has built the day (and Friday) into the holiday schedule. So, I’m on a 4 day weekend!

  • We're back to procedure masks instead of KN95s at work.

Masks became optional even in schools this week here in Oregon. I thought I’d be uncomfortable around students, but with the antibiotics, I have literally been unable to wear a mask due to the nausea.
I’ve been able to sleep more during my prep because I can eat with students in the room again.

My physician told me not to worry since I have my booster shot. It’s felt good. I honestly don’t know how I would’ve made it through with mask on this week.

    Also… I am on spring break. I can’t believe I’ve made it.
  • @pangolindrome we've been mask optional since we went back in August. We do in house testing for respiratory symptoms and have been doing well keeping covid at bay. I much prefer teaching without a mask, I found it hard to talk through it last year.
  • @jhysmath What are your vaccination rates like, if you don’t mind me asking? My zip code has about 45% compared to 60-99% in the rest of the county because ‘Murica.
It’s caused me a lot of anxiety about the masks coming off. I’ve hated teaching with a mask because my voice does not carry, I’ve got a really inconvenient pitch for teaching. I love my voice, really :D it’s been nice this week.

I just looked it up and it says 77% fully vaccinated for our town which actually surprises me because we have a lot of Murica here too, when our school board said we would be going back mask optional I had a lot of fear especially because my 3 year old is in the preschool here working with the high school students. Our school nurse is great about testing students and has rapids, pcr nose swaps and spit cups. We had a small break out in the 6th grade right before 12 and under could be vaccinated. That put a strain on our school because one of the 6th graders moms runs a daycare that every math teacher here sends their kid too and well...they had to close and our kids had to be quarantined due to exposure. We have not had a outbreak at the high school level yet, but seeing our vaccination rate as a town I'm going to assume more students are vaccinated than I expected.
  • @jhysmath I’m sure I’ve seen it somewhere but what do you teach? :)
Also, that is really great to hear. I wish we had those numbers. I actually believe the high schoolers may have a higher vaccination percentage than the rest of the zip code, but that could be wishful thinking on my part.

I teach high school math. My husband teaches middle school math in the same building.
  • I got my Botox for migraines today!!! I don’t think I’ve been this excited for a doctors appointment ever, even the ultrasounds. The last month has been hell, waiting for second trimester so I could get the meds. Now I will be migraine free for 4 months!!

    Great news!!!
  • 61% here, because I live in the Republican/liberatarian hell part of California (like there's an anti-vax anti-mask "freedom rally" going on in town right now.  ugh.).  My work still requires masks, but we did just switch from KN95s to procedure masks.

  • Washington just went mask optional... Our county has a 92% rate of those over 5 receiving at least 1 dose. The school I work in is 95% vaccinated including students. I work in admin so I am able to keep mostly away from students so I have been taking my mask off until I am around a lot of people or those that I know are anti-vax. I do wear it in public though because I want to see how rates are effected before I decide to take it off all the way.
  • I’m still wearing one in public. Our class sizes are really small. My biggest class has 13 students when everyone is there and my smallest has 5 right now. I’m less worried thanks to that, and I am waiting for a second air filter/purifier for my classroom.
