Re: Product Spotlight: Car Seats

  • Last time around we got a Chicco KeyFit 30 as our infant seat. I really liked it in terms on installation, it has a base which we basically just left in and the seat clicked in and out of it. Size wise, at least for our car it was one of the ‘smaller’ options which was pretty important since my husband is tall and we wanted to be able to switch seats if needed. I use the term smaller loosely as I feel like most infant seats are big but it worked for us and was easy to use.

We switched to the Britax Marathon Clicktight around a year and we also really liked that as well. The clicktight option made it really easy to install. I will say too it was pretty easy to clean, from unfortunate personal experience. I was able to take the whole thing out, hose things off, spot clean the fabric and straps, then easily get it back together when dry. We used that up until recently when we switched to a booster for our 5 almost 6 year old.

  • We also had a Chicco (pronounced key-co) KeyFit 30 (fun fact: the 30 actually means that they size out of it at 30" or 30lbs, whichever comes first). Unless you have a tiny little nugget that grows slowly, believe me when I say that the infant seat will get heavy fast, so try to avoid those that weigh more. I was dead-set on one that was 11 pounds without the base, but I'm so glad ours topped out at 9.6. Add in an 8 pound baby and that's a lot of weight to be lugging around!

For what it's worth, every single car seat is required to go through the same safety tests, so while one may have added additional safety features, even the cheapest (new) seat will be safe enough to protect your little one. The biggest difference you'll see between the cheaper options and the more expensive options is the level of comfort for the child. For example, a seat under $100 usually has less padding than one over $150 (I'm sure exceptions exist, of course).

Right around 10 months or so, we moved to a Graco Slim Fit. At 28 months, we still have her rear-facing and she doesn't mind it at all. The height cut off is 40" for rear-facing, so even though she looks squished, I know she's actually comfortable. This seat is cheap enough that we were easily able to afford one for both our cars and my in-laws got one for their car as well (she's with them usually for a few hours most Sundays).

To offer some unsolicited advice, never ever let your littles wear a coat or plush jacket in the car. What works beautifully for us is to keep a big throw blanket (think 50"×60") in the back of each car for her. That way she can cover up or not, and she loves how cozy it is. An added bonus is that it can help keep the seat clean from snacks by being over her lap, and it's super easy to wash. 🙌🏻

  • We are looking at the keyfit 35. Anyone have any pro/cons for it?
  • We have a Britax Bsafe 35 for our infant seat. It has a max weight of 35 lbs and max height of 32 inches. It was great for my first kid. We were able to keep her in it until she was 15 months. She was 31.5 inches at that time so we figured we'd switch her before she got to the 32" she wasn't even close to 30lbs at the time so weight wasn't an issue. She was my 50th percentile baby.

Our second, 99th percentile all around, got to heavy to carry around 9 months in it. Instead of leaving it in the car and just picking her up out of it, as it's higher up than our convertible we just switched her to the convertible. I don't think she maxed out the height or weight on it, but it was just too much to carry in and out. We likely could have kept her in it for awhile longer, but she was over 30lbs at her 1 year appointment and I think over 30" tall.

What I look for in a carseat is easy latch attachments. My sister, years ago, had latch attachments that were clips and they were terrible to have to undo and I hated them. All of our carseats (britax and graco) have attachments that are like seat buckles. You push them in to attach and then push the release button to unattach. I also like the carseats that have the pull top adjusters for height and you don't have to rethread the buckles to change the height like I have to for the infant seat, not sure if they make infant seats like that though.

We have a britax allegiance for our first, she's almost 4 and still rear facing. The carseat definitely has some wear and tear being used for almost 3 years now. We will be switching hers out to either a forward facing 5 point harness type carseat or booster when this one comes along, most likely this summer to get her used to buckling that. Our second is in a graco slim fit our first is jealous that it has cup holders and hers doesn't. We will likely get another slimfit for baby #3 once we need a convertible.  We're hoping to fit 3 across the back of our Nissan Titan Crew Cab truck so we will need narrow ones. There is no way I could fit 3 in my car, so my car will have the old convertible, and then we can move another into mine and/or keep the base for the infant seat in there and I can take 1 or 2 kids in my car, and the truck can take 3 kids so who drives what will depend on who has what for kids. Eventually I will end up buying a new vehicle and have to decide my priorities, my husband wants a SUV with a third row so we can take other people, I'm of the thoughts he told me we're done with 3 kids, I don't want to take other people with us they can drive themselves. (other people is likely his mother).
  • I have an affinity for Britax after wonderful customer service experience. We used our B-Safe infant seat for the three kids but it has since expired… trying to figure out what would be best for us next.  We have the Britax click tight convertible seats (LOVE- so easy to install correctly) but I have to check the expiration on those. I have big babies who become too heavy to lug around in infant seats past 8 months or so.
  • We had the Baby Jogger City Mini Travel System with #1 and used that infant car seat. It worked well for us. We will probably also use it this time too, just so we don't have to buy anything else.

As for convertible, my 4 year old is still in the Graco 4 Ever and we have loved it. I'm not comfortable with her using the car buckle quite yet, so we will probably switch her to a true harness-less high back booster when she turns 5 and and baby will get the convertible carseat.
  • @laj0217 That's what I'm considering, also. I'd love to weigh in on this since it's my third baby, but the Graco one I used for my 8year old has long since expired.
  • Question: do you recommend a car seat/stroller combo (a travel system) or is it worth getting a car seat and stroller separately and then getting an adaptor so you can attach the car seat to the stroller if need be?
  • @bigworldlittleg We got the car seat and stroller separately with an adapter but that was mostly bc I wanted a BOB stroller since I run. I feel like I got more use out of it that way just bc I was able to use the stroller a really long time, but I also know people who got a travel system and loved it. It honestly depends what your needs for it are.
  • @bigworldlittleg We bought the Chicco brand new, but the stroller that comes with the travel system was used and from a friend. After a couple months, we realized we just really didn't like how bulky it was. We then got a $100 stroller caddy that was a game changer for us, personally. Now we use a lightweight stroller as our regular stroller and I'm very happy with it (Chicco Liteway, I believe it's called).

All this to say that it's a personal decision, but just know that some travel systems are far more bulky. How do you plan to use your stroller? Daily on the streets for walks, occasionally through parks, or rarely for zoo (or similar) outings?

  • @dsmith211 which car seat did you get to go with the bob?  I’m considering going that route bc I already have the Bob, but never had the adapter to attach an infant seat to it.
  • Thank you @dsmith211 and @trapperkeeper87 for the info! I do plan to go for walks around our neighborhood pretty frequently, so perhaps a less bulky stroller that is still compatible with a car seat would be the way to go. I'll definitely keep it in mind as I review options!
  • @bigworldlittleg totally depends on your needs. We live wheres it's often cold and windy so it was really nice when baby was little, I could keep her bundled in the carseat and just click her into the stroller to go into the store. Now that she's older, never use the carseat in the stroller. I either wear her in the front pack or put her in the shopping cart. If you're going shopping or something where baby would be in the stroller for a few hours, you maybe would rather have a traditional stroller seat so baby can stretch out a bit more and lay flat.
  • @bigworldlittleg I wasn't going to get a stroller at all. But then my carseat of choice was on sale and the same cost to get it with the stroller as it would be to get it without. So I ended up with the stroller. I find it pretty light weight. I can fit it in the truck of my small car and can take it out and open it with one hand. I pretty much only use it with the infant seat now though, because we have a wagon and with two kids the wagon is easier.
  • Thank you @babywiik and @jhysmath for the info! It’s very helpful to hear how others use their car seats/strollers. I will probably make a list of options with pros/cons of each to help me make a decision. And now I have a better sense of the types of features that might be helpful!
  • @JRae2015 I had the Chicco KeyFit 30. They have adapters for various types though. I think there are like 3 others. I liked that it was super easy to actually install and remove it as needed. It basically just allows you to click the seat in as you would do with a car seat base in your car.

Just search “BOB Car Seat Adapter” on Amazon and it should be the first thing that comes up.
  • Happy Thursday!

When should we start purchasing car seats and strollers?

How often do car seats need to be replaced like in the event of blowouts or do you just wash it?

Also, has anyone had a Nuna car seat? I hear it’s the lightest in weight. I like the look but are they comfortable for baby? Is it worth it?
  • @1stbabydue0912 You can really buy them whenever you're comfortable having them, but you'll definitely want the car seat before the baby gets here. As far as replacement, you only need to replace them if they expire OR they're in a car that has an accident, even a minor one. Any damage requires replacement. They're pretty easy to clean, so you won't need to replace when the baby has a blowout.

  • Has anyone used the Doona car seat/stroller before? I know they're super expensive but they look so cool. Just wondering how functional it would be.
  • @1stbabydue0912 I am also interested in thoughts on the Nuna! Safe and lightweight sounds great.

@whitta1015 those Doona sets seem so great and practical! I don't even think that's too expensive considering you are getting the base, the seat, and a stroller!

Hubby and I are buying the Nuna Mixx next stroller (on its way) and one of the Nuna car seats (probably the Pipa???). A friend has them and says it’s soooo easy to click the car seat into the base for the stroller or car seat.

I live in Canada and it’s cold AF, even when September hits. I don’t think I’ll be going for many long walks the first few months so I’m not springing for the bassinet stroller attachment.

My thought process is, if I’m alone grocery shopping, I don’t want to have to carry a big car seat (I’m a pretty petite human so I don’t want to carry the car seat all the time. I want to be able to whip the stroller/car seat out of the SUV, put baby into it quickly, grab my groceries and get baby back in the car with minimal disruption to baby.)

Is this a reasonable idea? Or am I dreaming here?

@melyrae Two words...GROCERY. PICKUP. Just kidding  ;) I would say it depends what age your baby is during this "dream" haha. You aren't going to want to push a stroller and a grocery cart at the same time while you're alone, so you would typically just take the infant carseat out of the car base (with baby still in it) and sit it in the grocery cart, or baby wear. Once the baby is older and can sit up, hold it's head up, etc. it'll be easy to sit them in the front seat of the grocery cart. Idk if that answers your question at all?
  • @whitta1015 hahaha I love that answer.
Thanks for the input! That’s super helpful. Usually we grocery shop every day or two and buy our food pretty fresh but I think that’s going to change- more planning in the future!
  • @melyrae I don't think your expectation is unreasonable, especially if you get groceries every day or every other day. I'd look for a stroller that has an easy to access and large basket at the bottom to help carry your groceries.

That said, it really is easier to just plop the infant seat in a cart or baby wear, but honestly, that's not the best method for everyone. For us, I would usually park next to a cart return so I could grab one and put the seat in pretty easily, and then return the cart just as easily at the end of the trip.

  • @trapperkeeper87 Thank you for answering. you are amazing. Just thought you should know.

@runsonanxiety It really does! I watched a review on YouTube and the base seems really easy to secure as well.
  • We got the Baby Trend jogger travel system as a gift from my parents for our first son. It seemed great until the baby came and we realized how heavy the infant bucket seat is 🥴 though the stroller itself is pretty nice. Idk about any other STM+ moms, but I personally hated lugging around a baby in an infant seat. So bulky and even with the weight of seat + baby it’s still pretty heavy. Maybe I’m just weak though lol either way, we upgraded to the Graco 4-in-1 when my son was about 6 months because his torso was almost an inch below the top of the infant seat (which is an important thing to watch for, it’s not just overall weight or height) and we’ve loved it! We have one in each car actually. Even at 6 months, by using the infant insert that came with the car seat it was super comfy for him and he often fell asleep in the car. He turned 2 in December and he’s still rear facing and fits great in it even with being in the 99th percentile for height. I recommend our Graco seat to everyone and I’m sure I’ll buy another one for baby #2 down the line, though I think I’ll just suck it up and use our old infant seat for the first few months.
