Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

beginer table foods

We're kind of off to a late start with table foods (DD has some gag issues and kind of forces herself to vomit when she hates something), but we're trying to catch up. DD is small (prob about 15 lbs at 11 months) and I'm trying to find that balance between getting her to eat something, and getting her to chew better/eat more table foods.  This is very hard!!!

So far DD eats cherios, cheese  zwiebec toast, and we're trying biter buiscuits this weekend.  She does ok with pasta (when she decides to eat it rather than play with it) and she had trouble picking up the rice we tried last night.   She forced herself to throw up with a stage 3 last (beef, barley and veggie) night, so we don't know which kind of foods we should be using for the transition.  We're also tried some turkey and chicken, but she doesn't seem to like the meat texture and seems very frustrated with chewing/gumming.  Oh- for what it's worth she has 3 teeth on top, 2 on the bottom, and more comming in as we speak.

Anyone have any recomendations for how to get her to eat things she needs to chew?  What beginer table foods do/did your kids love.  Thanks!!

Re: beginer table foods

  • FWIW, I doubt that she is forcing herself to throw up. It is the different textures of food that trigger her gag reflex. It isn't that she doesn't like them, its because she isn't used to them. I was a nanny for 9 years before DD came along, and saw this with almost every baby I watched.

We skipped stage 3 foods and went straight to table food. We give her mashed potatoes, little pieces of ham, turkey, and chicken, scrambled eggs, pancakes, waffles, toast with jam or butter, stuffing, cheese raviolis etc. She does great with everything now, but like you we did have a few puking episodes.

Just keep trying them. She will catch on soon.

  • We actually just got a medical confirmation that DD has acid reflux.   The Dr at the radiology place said that our dr. may want to put DD on meds for AR since we have a medical confirmation.  Do you think that would help, or will her gag reflex just get better as she gets older and figures this out?

  • FWIW,  I'm having the same issues with DD.  She has a very sensitive gag reflex and tries to force it and has resulted in throwing up.  Pedi says she's just interested in the sensation right now.  But DD is also bad a chewing/gumming.  She loves to pick up and put food in her mouth but doesn't chew.  So we are behind in table foods too.  I have no advice just wanted to let you know i'm in the same sitch : )

It should definitely get better. DD had the same problem when we first started puffs and cheerios. She puked at least the first 3 times she had puffs, then she started to get the hang of it. We haven't had any more vomiting episodes, but she does still gag sometimes. If so, I usually just make the pieces smaller for her.

Definitely ask your pedi about the reflux meds to be safe, but I am almost certain that he/she will tell you that gagging at the begging stages of table foods is very common.

  • DS does well with small bits of well-cooked veggies like broccoli, peas, squash, sweet potatoes and fruits like bananas, avocados and kiwi.

  • We don't have the problem with DD gagging, but instead she is just picky with what she eats right now. We give her almost anything (except nuts and shellfish). Usually we let her try what we are eating at dinner and then when she doesn't want that, she has: mac n cheese, spaghettios, chx neggets (when she actually eats them), mixed veggies, gold fish, nilla waffers, yogurt, cheerios, honey combs. We can almost always get her to eat mac n cheese and cheerios and yogurt, other than that, she has a few bites and doesn't want the other things. I hope she doesn't stay picky forever.

Sorry to hear about the acid reflux, hope it is better with meds!!

  • DD gaged on cheerios until she was at least 9 months and she still has issues with the texture of some foods. Avacado was great in the beginning and still is one of her favorites.
