3rd Trimester

Not dilated at 39 and half weeks

So worried about not being dilated yet. Now they are discussing induction at 41 and half weeks. Is there a chance I still dilate or go into natural labor then dilate?

Re: Not dilated at 39 and half weeks

  • You can literally go from no dilation to fully dilated in a matter of hours or walk around 4cm dilated for a month (like I did in 2 pregnancies) and then still have to be induced. It really doesn’t mean anything at all.

I didn’t dilate until they started my induction at 40 weeks due to unrelated issues.
like PP said, especially if you’re a first time mom. It’s completely normal to not be dilated early. That’s what my midwives told me when I asked to be checked at 39 + 40 weeks . It took cervidil and multiple doses of misoprostol to get me to 4 cm before I had pitocin. I wouldn’t worry too much about it until you’re at the point of a discussion about induction. Because yes there’s absolutely a good chance you’ll still have it happen on your own
  • Stressing about labour will make you create more cortisol and adrenaline, both which slow down and stop early labour. Adrenaline is needed right after pushing: much later in labour.

As frustrating as it is to want labour to commence, trust your body and do as much as you can to relax and reduce stress in your life. Trust in your body and your baby.

Worth researching and knowing how the uterus works to understand the ideal conditions for you to work with your body and start it naturally.
  • I never dilated during my first pregnancy. I don’t want to scare you, but you may be like me. I was induced at 41+5 and after laboring for almost three days I still had not dilated. I had a c section at the end of the third day and had a healthy baby boy. I’m having a scheduled c section this time around and I’m okay with it. I think it’ll take a lot of the stress I felt last time off the table. So don’t worry too much. Doctors are awesome and will work around any issues that come up.
  • My first pregnancy I got a sweep done at my prenatal appointment on a Thursday because I was not dilated or effaced and had baby naturally on Saturday which was two days past my due date!
