Exercise

Hi! My name is Ashley.

This is my second pregnancy, but its been a while. Last time through I didn't have an exercise routine. Now, I do HIIT classes at Orangetheory Fitness 4 times per week. I'd love to keep my routine going throughout my pregnancy if possible. My OB says at this point (4w6d) I shouldn't need to modify much. Just keeping my heartrate under 150 and  making sure I'm not gasping for breath.

What does everyone else do for exercise and do you plan to maintain the same routine? Any modifications you're planning to make?

Re: Exercise

  • Hey Ashley! I’d say go off of how you feel? Im no pro and this is my first pregnancy. I am 4w5d and continuing to ski, backcountry ski tour, rock climb, and all the things…just not pushing my cardio. Im at super high elevation too but it’s normal for me so I don’t want to change my lifestyle? I feel ok so far. I don’t get to meet the doctor until 10 weeks so I’m just going with my gut. Im super curious about this though…

  • Hi! I’m 4 weeks 3 days and I go to Burn Bootcamp and I plan to workout the entire time as long as it’s safe. I know the trainers can mod things for me when I talk to them next week. Since we found out so early, I haven’t even had the chance to make a doctors appointment but will definitely talk to them about this too when I see them

At least with orange theory, you can monitor your heart rate pretty easily!
  • That's so true. I already told 2 coaches just in case they notice I'm not pushing myself as hard and can help with modifications when/if needed. They also said they like to know so they can keep a closer eye on my heart rate too.
  • Hi folks! I'm normally a big exerciser (running and HIIT) but took a little break as my body got used to the IVF hormones. I'm hoping to gently get back into it, while listening to my body, before the morning sickness gets the best of me (like it did for my first).

I do OTF 4x/week as well! I definitely plan to continue as long as my body will let me (currently 5w4d). I think it will be so good for me mentally & physically - good for baby & giving birth, especially since it helps so much with muscle tone (and I’m terrible at weight training on my own). If you go on Reddit, you can search pregnancy in the OrangeTheory channel, and they have a ton of information and mods, it’s a very common concern. I’ve read that you should just try to keep your heart rate out of the red zone and that’s exactly what I’ve been doing (I’ve just had to back off my tread speed by 0.5 mph or so). And I definitely plan to consult my OBGYN the whole way through.
  • Hey ashley,
This is my second pregnancy too. I'm continuing to workout with my trainer who is also certified in pre and post natal fitness. At this point she also said to go based on how I feel, but that no modifications are necessary at this time.
I'm also hoping to do more pelvic floor exercises, and others that could potentially help for birth.

Hi! I’m a first time mom and usually spin. I switched to prenatal classes on YouTube in addition to all the walking I do since we live in a city! There is really great content there if you are looking for various exercises and yoga!
The cardio classes I have been finding seem to usually have some pelvic floor exercises so that’s an easy way to add them in!
  • I also do OTF! I’m nervous to go though since I’m still so early in pregnancy, I’m not in the best shape, pandemic kicked my butt! It’s hard for me to keep my HR down but maybe I’ll just have to power walk instead of jog, I definite want to keep going though, it makes such a difference in my mental health!

Thanks for this! My husband has been a little concerned about my activity level, so I told him I'd keep an eye on my HR and he seemed reassured :)
  • With previous pregnancies, I was advised to limit myself to 80% of my pre-pregnancy ability. I was doing xfit so, that meant limiting squats from 200lbs down to 160, and only doing as many reps as I could have done under 200lbs of weight, using previous max reps as my guide.
This time I want to know how to cut back 20% of my kiddos.
Mostly joking, but I am making the oldest 'help' push/pull the wagon uphill instead of letting her ride.

  • I found an amazing channel on YouTube with prenatal workouts and yoga - it’s called Pregnancy and Postpartum TV. They even give weekly meal plans!! Highly recommend
  • I also do OTF! 6 weeks in, first pregnancy here. I haven’t heard anything about keeping heart rates down yet - especially after tonight! Spent most of the night in orange/red. Hopefully it’s ok since it’s still so early.
