Subs & Lunch Meat

So whats the deal with lunch meat? Are we really not supposed to eat it? I have read in some places its a small chance of causing issue.

What have your doctors said? How do you feel about it?

Ok, my doctor was old school.  When I asked him this question he said in his entire career (he retired 2 years after I had my daughter) he had NEVER had a patient sick from lunch meat.  Just like everything else - eat in moderation.

He said is there a chance, yes there is also a chance of everything.

Just be sure you get it from a reputable place and that it hasn't been sitting out in the open.  If really concerned, he said microwave it for a few seconds or make a hot sandwich and pantry the meats.

I ate cold cuts while pregnant.

  • My doctor told me you’re more likely to get listeria from lettuce or ice cream than lunch meat, and that he only concern would be the nitrates. Because we really have no idea how they affect the fetus. That said they sell nitrate free lunch meat. I just eat lunch meat in moderation.
  • Thanks for sharing. I dont plan to eat subs every day. Maybe 1-2x a month. Just knowing its ify makes me want to stay away. Our Jersey Mikes finally opened and of course its like the week I found out Im pregnant. Haha
  • There are deli meats that do not have nitrates in them if you are craving a sandwich - my doctor said those were fine. Of course they are the more expensive types but sometimes you just want a good turkey sandwich!
  • Just make sure the place you’re getting it is in compliance with health department etc. one of my coworkers was telling me the other day that when he worked at a Jersey mikes their fridge wasn't working properly & wouldn’t go below 47. Which is obviously not safe. But a brand New Jersey mikes would hopefully have working equipment.
