Re: Product Spotlight: Diaper Bags

  • I don’t know if this is still active, but last week Hello Bello was doing a promo of a free diaper bag if you ordered a diaper bundle

    https://hellobello.com/products/promo-new-diaper-bag (code: DPRBG)

The bag is functional, nothing special and not particularly cute but will be a good backup!

  • Since when have they started offering diaper bags that expand out with some kind of travel bassinet? Doesn't seem very practical to me so if anyone has any good situations in which you would want to use it, I'm all ears!

Also, if y'all got any lists of "must have" features in a diaper bag that would be awesome! Does anyone find that the diaper bags with the slotted side pocket to pull out wipes/tissues super handy or not really?

  • @inthewoods23 I agree. That whole travel bassinet things seems super impractical to me, so if anyone has a solid case for it working, I'm all ears!

Personally, I never used the designated wipes/tissues side pocket for wipes or tissues.  Just too many layers of zippers/flip tops/etc. to mess with.  I just threw the wipes in the main diaper bag with everything else.  The side pockets are nice for small, frequently used things though.

My only real must haves are 1) that it be a backpack style bag; and 2) that it have designated bottle/cup holders.  Which is a pretty low bar because that describes appox 50% of the diaper bags on the market, lol.
  • @zwink1 I'm glad I'm not the only one wondering what the heck with the travel bassinet haha. There's one I saw that seemed to be fully enclosed almost like a soft pet carrier bag :D poor kid would probably be so claustrophobic in it.

My must have list right now just includes
    -backpack style
-insulated pocket for filled bottles needing to be kept cold.
-either a key clip or small pocket for my wallet so it has a designated spot. I've pretty much stopped using purses these days and have a plain/basic not for work backpack for certain travels or outings (like the zoo to hold any beverages or snacks we want to bring)

  • I’ve got a backpack one I got off of Amazon. I think the brand is Land or something like that. It’s roomy and has an insulated area for bottles.

This time around, I also got one of the itzy ritzy crossbody bags (bought used). Looks like a purse but has a changing pad and place for wipes. It’ll be nice for quick trips to the store or doctor when I don’t need everything and don’t want to haul the diaper bag and baby.
  • I had a backpack style diaper bag from Target with my last baby and I felt like a boyscout everywhere I went with that thing strapped to me and so big and bulky. I HATED it. Looking back on photos of me with it on confirms how I felt every time I wore it. 😂 I looked ridiculous and it really made me feel a lot less feminine. This time around to spare myself that feeling, I bought a traditional style (duffle bag like) diaper bag from ZARA.com that is stylish and soft and snaps onto the stroller handle or I can throw it down in the basket. I bought a separate bottle insulator for $7 at Target to stick inside of it.
  • @oli9 out of curiosity, what bag from Target did you get last time?

  • @inthewoods23 now that you asked I had to look it up and I’m not surprised why I felt like a Boy Scout. Lol. It was the Ergo Baby Adventure Diaper Bag. I think what made me so self conscious wearing it was the huge side pockets that stuck out when you had bottles in them. Very bulky bag! I’m sure they are making them sleeker now.
  • Speaking from personal experience, Petunia Picklebottom diaper bags are super cute, but impractical. It's mostly one big, deep pocket, so everything ends up a jumbled mess.

I got my husband a diaper bag backpack from Tactical Baby Gear and he really likes it. It's the one we end up using whenever we all go out together.  The main compartment unzipping all the way makes it much more easy to organize and find what you need, and the padded shoulder straps are great. Not my style aesthetic wise (it's designed to look like military gear), but it's very practical. I definitely recommend the backpack diaper bag style regardless of the brand you get.

The bags with "travel bassinets" are basically gimmicks. The "bassinets" are not safe sleep spaces.  However, I highly recommend diaper bags that have a fold out changing pad, as it makes on-the-go diaper changes much easier.

  • I have this skiphop diaper bag and I like it. I use it as a crossbody mainly (because I never really carry it anywhere - goes into the car and then into the stroller for the most part), but it does convert to a backpack as well. It does hold a lot and I use these clear travel pouches to organize it - one for diapers, one for toys, and one for spare clothes, bibs, burp cloth and blanket. I use the inside pockets for all the wipes (regular wipes, boogie wipes, antibacterial hand wipes, spare binkie, diaper cream, hand sanitizer, and these disposable placemats (highly recommend!) I use when we go to restaurants. I am thinking of getting a new diaper bag this time around, but I haven't done much research yet - possibly the dagne dover diaper backpack.

Bottles, sippy cups and snacks I usually pack a small separate lunchbag with an icepack - I found that I didn't need an insulated pocket in my diaper bag because I liked to make sure milk stayed chilled with an icepack anyways.

Another really important bag for me (as an exclusive pumper) was my breast pump bag. I used this bag and then had this little cooler inside to keep the pumped milk in. I also kept extra breastmilk bags in there, a spare charging cord for the pump, a nursing cover (to use sometimes when pumping in public), a small towel (in case you spill), and of course snacks.
  • I had a crossbody with my DD and liked the pockets and organization features, but I didn't like how it constantly slipped off my shoulders (especially when carting around the car seat). I'm sticking with a backpack this time around and treating myself to a vegan leather La Mére from Azaria. I'm kind of a backpack hoarder, to begin with, so I'm excited that I'll be able to use this as a work bag after it serves its purpose as the diaper bag. It also has straps you can attach to convert to a crossbody/shoulder bag. I have friends who have purchased this bag and it holds up extremely well.

My essentials for a diaper bag are:
    -Changing mat that is wipeable
-Agree with PP about the travel pouches - even if a bag has pockets I like having everything situated so there aren't a bunch of random little things floating around in the bag
-I like having some kind of key clip in the bag so I don't have to constantly dig for my keys. I, too, forgo a purse when I have the diaper bag, so I need to fit all my stuff in there.
-I always have snacks and water, both for me and the little one
-Spare change of clothes for the baby. Honestly, a spare of pretty much everything.
-Sunscreen, wipes, Advil/Tylenol for me, hand sanitizer, etc. Little toiletries I may need while out and about.
-Lightweight blanket - to use either as a nursing cover, something to lay baby on in the grass, cover for the car seat/stroller if it's cold, etc

  • Hey friends! So exciting to see so many people crossing the half way point these days!

I just used my faux leather work backpack that had a space for a laptop and a few interior pockets, and that was great - it was beautiful and comfortable! If you already have a bag or back pack that you love you really don't need to replace it with a specifically marketed "diaper bag" (especially if you are hoping to primarily breastfeed - we never had to carry around bottles, and I think that makes a difference but 🤷‍♀️). Save your money! If you feel like you need more compartments, grab a couple of zippered dry bags (which you will use long after your kid is out of diapers and bottles and are great for travel!) I kept diapers, wipes, change pad, cream all in one dry bag, a change of clothes in another, etc. colour coded so that I could just yank out what I needed when it was needed!

I seriously feel like the buzz kill on every thread. I can't stop, I'm sorry!

One hot tip that is **tangential** to diaper bags though - we made it a firm rule in our house that no parent ever left the other parent solo with baby without the diaper bag packed and ready to go. This made a huge difference in being able to get out the door quickly and ultimately helped keep my mental health in a better position during my leave.
  • This is the one we registered for and have used it for 2 little ones:
HaloVa Diaper Bag Multi-Function Waterproof Travel Backpack Nappy Bags for Baby Care, Large Capacity, Stylish and Durable, Gray… https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071RLWKGQ/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_SJKXKK6WMB02CJ0SHF89

No complaints. It has inside and outside pockets to help organize stuff and he insulated pouch in the front. I always threw a wallet or wristlet in it when out and about. Agree with PP about the essential list and can't think of any additions (except like crayons or little toys once you add a toddler in the mix)
  • I have like a $20 backpack one from amazon that was good for longer outings or carrying lots of baby stuff.  lots of pockets and cute enough, but i later got one from Mina Baie which was more $$ but super cute and looks more backpack purse like than diaper bag and still fits plenty - i like some of the secret pockets for $$ and keys - which always freaks me out with wearing a backpack style bag

I agree with someone else- i hated the pockets for wipes and also the containers they come with to put wipes in do not keep the wipes wet
  • We got something similar to this one from amazon (like the bag in the original post). The things I liked about it were the very wide and structured opening on top, the extra zipper at the bottom so you don’t have to dig, and the safe spot for your phone/keys/wallet. And of course the price lol.

  • I want to add a suggestion for Sarah Wells bags - they are designed as breast pump bags but also double as diaper bags with their pockets and organization and they have lots of style and prints

Good call out on pump bags @runnergirl2018. I got a new pump bag for work so it’s not a separate bag this time. I love this one, it’s a backpack, fits my spectra, has room for lunch and has a separate zipped area for my laptop and notebook.

LUXJA Breast Pump Bag with... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078XQ2HZB?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

ETA - hope that’s ok to share here. I didn’t see we had a specific product spotlight for pump bags.
  • @sunshineandlemons thanks for sharing the link to the pumping bag! I’m definitely going to need something like that when I go back to work. I need to carry around my laptop and I’m planning to get the spectra S1 pump.
  • I have this Skip Hop bag:

    https://www.skiphop.com/skiphop-diaper-bags/V_200333.html

and really like it! Comes with a chang pad, it is the right number of pockets, some zippered some open and kept things quite organized. One downside for some might be the insulated side pockets don't zip up all the way, but I breastfed and usually had snacks in those ones so it worked out well for me. Love how it attached to the stroller when out and about. I will be using it again this time for sure.

It also comes in other colours if stripes aren't your style. I would definitely recommend to those who aren't set on a backpack style bag!
  • I've got a Matilda Jane diaper bag that I got used and its just ok...I think I'll be using the clear organizers idea to help improve it.

My husband on the other hand has this tank of a backpack. Its huge and its great for carrying stuff for multiple kids - especially since we're often out on day trips on the weekend. Either way, during the infant stage, I feel like there's always going to be a moment of "Where is the damn (insert whatever item you're looking for here)?!?!" But those days don't last forever.
