Progesterone Shots

My Dr was talking about them last visit but didn’t say if she was or wasn’t going to have me get them. Anyone got these shots before? Did you have any issues with them. I had pre term labor with my last son around 34 weeks gave me a steroid shot, my last two babies have came around 37 weeks. Super curious on peoples opinions on it?

Re: Progesterone Shots

  • Hey @texas-gurl this might be more appropriate in the Great Big Giant Question thread. People still read and answer questions there. Remember, one off posts like this are discouraged on The Bump. I have no personal experience with the progesterone shots, but I would talk with your doctor specifically about why they are suggesting them and what risks are involved.

  • I've had the steroid shots for baby since my last one was born at 23 weeks but I'm not sure what progesterone has to do with that particular experience...sorry. I'd talk to your doc about it.
  • Are you sure your doc said progesterone? Typically that’s something that’s just used in the first trimester, and shot-form is mostly used by people who have done IVF/fertility treatments. I used progesterone suppositories, but I stopped them at 12 weeks. Anyway, this is probably not something you should be seeking opinions on, I’d ask for clarification from your doctor if you have questions about it.

  • Yeah what your thinking of is the pill they give to prevent miscarriage early in pregnancy these are shots that start at 16 weeks to prevent preterm labor! I go again next week so going to see what she says! It’s also called the 17P shot!
  • I'm on progesterone. I use the suppositories instead of the injection, there is more data supporting that over injections to help curb preterm labor. I will be on it until 36 weeks or delivery, whichever comes first.
You can get progesterone in a pill that you take orally or vaginally or an injection the brand name is McKenna. Usually they start you on the pill first and if they want weekly injections they switch to that around 16 weeks (that has been my experience). I've been in preterm labor twice with previous pregnancies
