Re: Product Spotlight: Pregnancy Books/apps
As far as books, I just rented a bunch from the library. I don't remember if I actually made it all the way through any of them. But I do remember the clinic giving out pamphlets and booklets at nearly every appointment.
The one book I did read most of was The Happiest Baby on the Block.

Baby Bargains by Denise and Alan Fields was a really great resource as a FTM trying to pick out baby gear.
The Bump and What to Expect are the two apps I use while pregnant.
I have a whole rant about how people are bad at risk assessment, and if you actually want to protect your baby from harm while pregnant, the most important thing you can do is always wear your seatbelt and drive under the speed limit. Forget lunch meats. But that's a topic for another day...

My friend and I were talking about lunch meats the other day because it was 3 hours after having a sub sandwich at work before I was like "whoops I just had lunch meat" haha. She has a friend that couldn't eat anything but Jimmy John's in her 1st tri because it was the only thing she could keep down. And that friend has a perfectly healthy 8 year old so the risks are just risks. They're not a definite means to a bad outcome.
I've already had herbal teas a few times in early pregnancy because I really wasn't thinking about it and that's supposedly bad. Which I think just means there are no good studies showing that's okay.
And think too - how many women go through pregnancy not even knowing their pregnant and end up with healthy babies? You can do all the right things or wrong things and end up with a good or bad outcome. There's only a few true hard and fast rules right?

But this is exactly the other issue that is infuriating-- all risks are treated the same in terms of levels. If you take accutane, it's bad enough for the fetus that most women TFMR. If you take ibuprofen, it's like, eh, probably nothing will happen. But most books or pamphlets will just say "don't take ibuprofen, don't take accutane" and not really tell you that one is WAY WORSE than the other. Same with like, fish or smoking. Mercury is not great, you should try to avoid it. But tobacco is *terrible*. You should try harder to avoid it.
The other hard part is like you said "so and so smoked her whole pregnancy and her kid won a nobel prize". All of this stuff is about risk. I like to think of it like saying "My friend rode his motorcycle without a helmet and was fine". Like, yeah, most of the time you will be. But the helmet is still protective an average over time (this is the covid vaccine/mask metaphor I use a lot).
Anyway-- I think Expecting Better does a great job parsing all of this stuff and helping you to focus on what might actually make a difference in your pregnancy.
