Re: February Crafting/Gardening/Creativity

  • Anyone else here crochet? This month is too hectic for me to feel any desire to start anything, so I’m waiting until March. But I’m already thinking about what kind of blanket I want to crochet for this baby. Anyone else?

  • My mom does and I know how too but I haven’t in so long. I was considering making a blanket for baby too!
  • Oh wow! I’m not that talented. That looks amazing.

@paytonpedro I crochet but I’m not that good. I have a hard time reading patterns so I basically make up random stitches as I go.

My craftiness is pretty exclusively painting and graphic art. Both hobbies (the latter being a career I had and that is now freelance for over 10 years). I don’t get to do either near enough.

I have dreams of being crafty but the reality of that just doesn’t match up with my life. I’d love to make jewelry and sell it but I don’t even know where to start.

  • @wigglyicecream & @lindsaybelle thank you both! 😊 it definitely had flaws lol but I was very broad of how it turned out and sad I couldn’t give it away.

@and_peggy I actually don’t know how to read patterns at all. My grandma has tried to show me but I really have no desire lol. I just look at a picture of something and make it.
I wish I could paint but what I see in my head and what goes on the paper are vastly different lol. I don’t have the patience for a lot of crafting.
Have you considered selling in Etsy? Or doing like a fb group? I have an Etsy for hand embroidered onesies I want to start selling but I haven’t actually jumped on it yet. I feel like my life currently doesn’t match up with being overtly creative either. Maybe when all the kids are in school? 😅

This was actually super simple and very repetitive. It’s basically flower granny squares all attached together.
  • @paytonpedro maybe, I don’t know. I’ll probably have to doing more than just side hobbies for work here in the next few years. Our kids go to a private school so by the time #3 starts kinder, I’ll be needing to pull my weight 🥴

  • @and_peggy mh is almost too supportive that it feels pushy and I think that’s my hang up. I want to do it because I love it and get to express my creativity. Not because I feel pressured into it. We’re lucky to live in a good school district, but otherwise we’d be looking into private school and I’d be in the same boat. Although, I do eventually plan to pick up more hours at the animal hospital.
  • @and_peggy I want to homeschool and if things in our state play outlet the way it’s looking, it might be reality. I just feel bad at this point because ds1 loves school so much.
  • @paytonpedro I’m sure. It’s wild how different things are in different states. In Texas it’s super easy to homeschool so I guess I feel like I have always have that option. There’s tons of co-ops and ways to get connected with other homeschoolers. But I’m sure that’s not the case in NY. When does DS2 start school?

  • @meagan822 literally exactly what @and_peggy said!! Those are all fabulous!!!

@and_peggy no. It’s so difficult to homeschool here. Our church has a co-op but is an hour away so that’s already a challenge. My cousin used to homeschool but had to stop. And I know another woman who homeschooled all of her 11 children but her youngest is 16. So it’s really not easy to just jump in. Ds2 can do preschool in the fall this year but I probably not sending him. I essentially homeschooled ds1 through preschool and he was more than prepared for K. But my biggest reason in sending ds2 is that it’s only a half day program, morning session and afternoon session, so I would essentially be back and forth to the school all day. And with a baby and their schedule it just sounds exhausting.
  • Ooh, love this thread topic!

@paytonpedro that blanket is beautiful! Definitely save it for your baby girl ;)
@and_peggy Now I'm curious about which church the private school is through, because a ton of my friends there growing up went to a Christian school in a church there lol.
We plan on homeschooling/farm schooling, too!

We are currently snowed in, but hopefully next week I'll start clearing out our raised beds (we have two, about 8'x20' each) and start working the soil for a Spring garden. I usually do one bed with squash and melons and the other as a salad/salsa/herb garden, but since having DS1 I've let them both get overtaken by weeds. Hoping to get them both back in action this year!
  • @aukeev I bet we have more people in common. I’ll message you, I don’t want to publicize all sorts of info

  • @and_peggy @paytonpedro Thanks, ladies!🥰 I think it’s easiest to see talent in others. I tend to switch up what hobby I’m most in the mood for every few months.🤣

Ooh! We plan to homeschool as well! Both my husband and I were homeschooled, and we liked it overall. My mom homeschooled 5 of us, so at times it was more independent than I preferred. My husband loved that independence and his mom also homeschooled him and 4 brothers. Some things we’ll plan to do similarly, but moreso take into account what each child likes best and excelled at for teaching style. I like the subjects my husband doesn’t love and vice versa. I can’t wait to teach cooking, crafting, gardening, practical finance, and lots of hands on skills that are beneficial for boys and girls to grow up knowing.🥰 For kids who love the social element of school, I highly recommend extracurricular classes and finding other homeschoolers and friends that they can meet with regularly! Growing up with neighbors and a homeschool group really gave me a lot of social skills and independence from my family norm, despite mom being a homebody through and through.
  • @aukeev thanks 😊🤞🏼
I have a giant 1250sqft garden that I’m not sure what I’ll do with this year. Our growing season is short and starts late (end of may) so I’m going to be super pregnant. I don’t know how much bending over I’ll want to do 😅
It was my pride and a really great distraction for me last year. I might have to delegate some of the work to mh and dad. Lol.

  • @paytonpedro I love your garden and backyard space! It sounds like a similar growing season to here. It would be a good summer for low maintenance things! When vegetables can be left unattended, it’s a win! Sweet peas was one we loved to let go crazy, and they would climb, so you wouldn’t have to bend for all of them!😅
  • @meagan822 thanks!! This is actually at my family’s land so it’s left unattended during the week. I think this year I’m just going to buy all my plants. I usually start everything by seed or put seeds right in the ground. But it’s just so much work. I tried peas in my own yard last year and they only grew about a foot high but I got a ton of them. I actually hate peas lol. But my kids and husband loved them! Carrots, peppers and tomatoes did really well for me, too, in my yard. So I might just repeat that at home and throw random stuff in the big garden. I did pumpkins last year and got some really huge great pumpkins! I also did the tiny ones and obsessed over them!
  • You ladies are much crafter than I!
I do enjoy my garden but not sure how to swing it this year.  I may have to stick with low maintenance  veggies. I typically do all my own starts, transfer June 1st and sew any direct seeds and harvest late Sept/early Oct. I found out I need to leave home and live about 5 1/2 hours away 4 weeks prior to expected delivery to be closer to the hospital I will deliver at. I hate leaving my home!
  • @kbtt2022 wow what an incredible view you have! My growing season is similar, except for veggies. I usually start getting stuff at the end of July/beginning of august depending on the conditions.

@fromfurmomtobabymom8-2 totally counts!!! My dad makes wine and hard cider! We pick a lot of the berries and all of the apples we use. We press our own cider and drink some fresh, but turn most of into hard cider. We did a blackberry hard cider last year that is just fabulous!!
I love your idea for the labels and designs! We don’t usually label with anything with more than a sticker saying what it is and alcohol content. Lol. But I would love to get something designed!
  • @starkette I romanticize about writing. I used to love it but just haven’t had a desire or a prompt in a long time. I’m impressed and so jelly!! That’s awesome!!
  • @fromfurmomtobabymom8-2 wine making ABSOLUTELY fits the topic! Blackberry cabernet sounds amazing!
  • @mangoandguava haha! Ah! I love that so much! I’m sure he loves it just because it’s from you!
  • @starkette @mangoandguava Re: Art- Thank you!💕 I somehow never saw these comments before this thread got buried.

@fromfurmomtobabymom8-2 The wine looks amazing! That’s such a cool hobby! Strawberry Rhubarb & Sweet white/rosé wines are my favorite. I don’t drink much, especially if it’s not sweet, and obviously not right now while I’m pregnant.😅 But I do love trying new things!

Bumping this because I wanted to share a picture of the gender reveal cupcakes I made and because I love all things creative. We announce to my family TOMORROW! It doesn’t feel real that it’s here yet.

@bridgiebee82 yum!!! And it looks really good!
@meagan822 yay! When do we get to know?!?

you guys are lucky I get cupcakes tomorrow for ds1’s bday party or I’d be going to get some tonight haha.
  • @paytonpedro thanks! I forgot about doing them more on top instead of so close to the edges you'd think with all of the baking shows I watched while quarantined, I'd have remembered!!
