Hi! I'm 39 now but will be 40 when baby is due in early Sept (it still feels so surreal to type "baby"!). This is also my first pregnancy and I am anxious about the whole "geriatric" piece, so thought I'd connect with this board as well.

  • I will be 40 in May.

It isn't called geriatric pregnancy but AMA now (Advanced Maternal Age)  :)
I was 37 when I had my first and while considered AMA, none of the testing showed any concern. I requested a midwife only OB care and that's what I got. My practice is very advanced in terms of care for women so they rely on science and common sense and not on stigmatizing women further.
Don't forget to advocate for yourself! If your blood pressure, NIPT tests, ultrasounds, blood draws, etc are all normal, congratulations, you have a normal pregnancy despite being AMA!

  • Yes, I am aware it's AMA, the "geriatric" was designed to be a joke.

  • Hey Hey! 46! Had my daughter at 42.
  • Hi! I'm 43.  Just found out this week that I'm 6 wks pregnant, with our first.  My husband and I did fertility treatments for a couple of yrs.  At the end, the Dr. told us, I have low quality eggs and blocked tubes that we need to use donor eggs and maybe even a sergeant.  Which we didn't want to go that route so we gave up, I stopped tracking and stopped taking all the vitamins.  And here we are 2 yrs later with this huge surprise!  I got my bloodwrk done yesterday and I won't knw my hcg levels until Monday. And she said it wasn't necessary to do a early ultrasound so I have have to wait to Feb 8.  I'm just anxious with block tubes it maybe ectopic and plus I had covid and ran a high fever for a couple of days.   I'm not feeling to many symptoms other then being tired and alot of cramping.  I'm so afraid to get excited abt this. Anyone can relate?

Congrats! Wishing you well. I feel like I won’t relax until week 14 (in week 8 now)! Just trying to take it one day at a time.
  • Hi. I’m 42, soon to turn 43. We had our kid back in May 2020 after many years of IVFs and suddenly know we found ourselves pregnant naturally. We did not know it was possible and are in complete shock. Don’t want to get my hopes high etc but then I would love too. Quite anxious as well give the age and potential issues this could bring. Good to connect with this group!

Oh my @sumdavis do I relate! I am 40, husband is 45. This is our first. We planned it and had been doing ovulation tracking. We were just getting underway with a specialist when my period didn't arrive and we had a positive test. I'm only 4 weeks 5 days and it feels like every single day is the longest of my life. My first appointment is not until 2/23. The doctor was unconcerned with may age and still doesn't want to see me until 8 weeks. I've only had bloating, acne, constipation, and occasional twinges in my abdomen. I'm not particularly tired and I have no nausea. I'm so scared that the lack of symptoms means something is wrong. But, my sister had almost no morning sickness with either of her two. My husband keeps telling me that it is all out of my control and to try not to think about it. How do you not think about it? It is literally all I think about, especially every time I pee (wiping is now scary -- sorry if that's TMI), every time I eat something (I apparently was eating soft cheeses daily -lol), and any time I feel anything different in any part of my body. I want to see the doctor and know some things for sure and then I want it to be 36 weeks from now with a baby in my arms.

  • Hello!

My name is Vanessa and I’m 41. I’m so grateful for this thread and to relate to mothers-to-be around my age!

I’m 8 weeks pregnant with our first child. We unsuccessfully completed a round of IVF in the fall, which left me feeling quite hopeless. Now that I’m pregnant, I’m trying to balance optimism with worry.

I’m VERY happy to have you all to bond with at this special moment in my life!
  • Welcome! Make sure to stop by the introduction thread, and impossible try to change from the default knottie name so that we can get to know you more easily.

  • @channas20 *lurking* congratulations! Not a fellow AMA mom here, but a 3rd time mom (4th pregnancy) who RARELY gets symptoms.
My first two pregnancies I only had heart burn and they were very healthy pregnancies. This last go ‘round I’ve had more symptoms.
Of course, every pregnancy is different so, just because you aren’t having symptoms doesn’t mean anything is necessarily going wrong! You’re extremely early, so your body just might not be showing symptoms yet.

I literally look every time I wipe too, so don’t feel alone there!

Be your own advocate. If you’re overly concerned, maybe you could contact your Doctor to see if he/she would be willing to run some blood tests to get numbers, since you’re too early for an ultrasound anyway.

The first 12 weeks (if you’re playing it conservative) can be isolating and lonely. I’ve learned to take pregnancy day by day. I know that I could always lose the baby, no matter how far along so I choose to celebrate this baby. Sure, there’s hesitation and worry, but he/she was a baby from conception so I want to make sure I spend my days in mostly celebration of being lucky enough to carry he/she as long as I can <3

  • @dimeadozen I love this perspective. Thank you so much for sharing. Kids were never part of our plan, so it does feel like such a gift to even be pregnant. I'm already talking to my little one all the time. I will (try to) spend my days in celebration as well.

  • I always look when I wipe too! Somehow I’m getting less scared (week 10 with 3 ultrasounds under our belt). And I also agree enjoying the moments we have right now is a beautiful perspective. Also I decided to tell right away folks who could support me no matter the outcome, and I’m waiting a couple more weeks for everyone else.
  • Just wanted to check in with my fellow 40+ mamas! How are you all feeling? I’m at 11 weeks now and hanging in there. Bloated like crazy and stressed about my first testing coming up.

  • I’m good! Week 13 now. Biggest side effect lately has been fatigue. Otherwise feeling pretty good. Went through the first major rounds of testing and all is looking good so far. Got to see the baby on US for about 40 minutes the other day which was amazing! Yawns, lots of movement, pretty cool…
