Re: GTKY 2/1/22

  • Somewhere tropical.  I am totally a beach person.  When I was in college, I spent a week in Goa, India, and I could see myself living there - it's like a Caribbean island dropped on the west coast of India.

  • I honestly don’t know. I’ve been a lot of beautiful/fun/amazing places but none of them seem like home. Although, Europe with its long maternity leave is looking pretty nice right now 😂
  • I wouldn’t move anywhere! We almost almost almost moved to Miami last summer! We were really looking into it. My husband has tons of family there and connections to the music industry there, he felt he could restart his business. I felt like my job would be remote forever and I’m just sitting at home all day anyway. I love Miami. And, I’d be a lot closer to my friends and family on the East coast and Midwest. We figured we’d move right when my son turned 3 as we were planning to move him from daycare to preschool then. So, thankfully, we’re not crazy people. We did a lot of due diligence. My husband went there to look at neighborhoods. His family showed him around. And, basically it was clear this was not for us. For so many reasons! Then, as my husband was leaving Miami, that building collapsed. And my husband had living in that building when he was a kid! He came back. Told me how much Miami had changed. I felt this huge relief was over me. Both of us had lost perspective of how good we have it in LA. Yes, it’s insanely expensive here and there are plenty of down sides. But we have access to everything in the world. The weather is amazing so we can be outside all year. And we have amazing friends and more importantly, community here. Our work is here. You don’t leave that. As soon as we made up our minds to stay, we got an offer to move from our small apartment into this big house (we’re renting). We had to scramble (because we were late) but we got my son into a wonderful preschool. Everything worked out once we were very clear on what we wanted. But I really believe we had to fully explore the option of moving to Miami, otherwise we always would have been wondering. The preschool led to us feeling even more connected to the community and now, I’m sure we are in exactly the right place for us. With the house, it’s so much easier to have people come stay with us. And, we absolutely could not have fit a 2nd kid into the apartment. It was so cramped with the 3 of us already!
  • I love rural areas with 4 seasons, but right now I'd love to be able to escape to a warm beach house for a couple weeks. I forget who on here has a homestead, but a close to self sustaining homestead would be a dream of mine.
  • Either Alaska or San Juan Island in the Puget sound. I lived in the pnw for a few years and really miss it. Also we went to Alaska for our honeymoon and it was the best trip ever. So gorgeous!! That being said, I also really love living in San Diego and don't actually see myself moving.

  • @Amphibious22 how many arms and legs did your house cost? lol

  • My husband and I are such PNW kids- we currently live in Seattle but we would love a home in our favorite place- Whidbey Island. My family has had a home there for decades and we got married there on the beach. I would take rocky and misty PNW beaches over tropical any day!

The only place outside of WA we would consider is Luxembourg- I have dual citizenship there and its gorgeous! We're thinking of spending 6 months there in a few years.
  • @jhysmath I could definitely do that! We don't have a homestead, but live in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by cornfields, with chickens and a huge garden each year! Closest Target is 30-40 minutes away. Closest stoplight is about 10 minutes away. haha

I really love where I live, but I would also love to live out in Wyoming or somewhere and live the ranch lifestyle! OR there's a small town here in SC on the coast that we visit a lot and have considered moving to, if it weren't for free childcare from our family.
  • I do like where we are but if I had a choice somewhere more rural and with 4 seasons. Florida has it’s perks, but summer weather about 9-10 months of the year is not one of them. 🥵
  • @whitta1015 we moved 2 years ago, but our closest shopping area (by that I mean the town has a Walmart and tj max as well as fast food) was 1.5 hours away. We now currently live in that town, and the closest target I think is 1.5 hours away 😂. I'd love chickens she a huge garden, but the corn field I'll pass on, children of the corn scared me as a kid, and then the likelihood of it being gmo corn and effecting my garden corn would be a bummer. It would also be a bummer if they were spraying constantly.

We have a property in western NY where we spend the summer that's 100 acres (mostly wood) that I'm looking forward to growing a garden, animals and my children one day.
  • @mamamoomoo12 I went to Luxembourg once when I was 18!

  • I grew up in NJ, moved around, and ended up back here to be closer to family. There are things I like about NJ, (a coastal state, highly diverse population, and policies (family leave, etc.)) but I really don't like the suburban sprawl and traffic. And where I'm living right now doesn't have the greatest sense of community. I lived on the Big Island of Hawaii for about a year which I loved, but the pace of life was much slower than I'm used to being from the East Coast so it was a little painful for me but I could definitely see myself returning when I'm older! I also lived in Ithaca, NY which was a great little city in the fingerlakes that had a much nicer sense of community. And I lived in Woods Hole, MA for a few years and also loved being right on the water with SUCH interesting people, but it is pricey and very much a touristy summer spot which I didn't love. I took a vacation to the pacific northwest and could see myself fitting in, though $$$. Ideally, I'd live somewhere near the water, where I could have maybe a few acres of land because my husband and I always have various project ideas and not enough space, that has a diverse population, and is near a small city with a good sense of community. Then I'd like to move my parents and my sister's family there, too. Not too much to ask for, right? lol.
  • @scimomma the diverse population is what rural America (at least in the north east) is missing. Growing up in a "city" and then teaching in a rural area, I worry about my children growing up with the same attitudes toward people of other cultures as my students do. I've told my husband we will have to travel often if we live in small town America with kids, because I will not have them growing up with the same ideologies as many of my students. We were doing good getting out and about with our first kid, but then covid shut down our travel plans so I'm hoping 1 day we will be able to travel without fear of illness for our littles.
  • @kboydbowman quite a few, but I feel really lucky that we bought before the prices got too out of control. There's no way we could afford this neighborhood if we were buying today.

  • @jhysmath yeah I grew up in a very diverse and integrated town. Growing up, I had friends whose families were from all over the world and never realized how special that was until I was older and started traveling to other parts of the country. I really want my kids to grow up in a diverse community too. I know that's not always an option and kids can still be exposed to other cultures through books, art, and travel but I just like not having to think so hard about it haha
  • @Amphibious22 You are so lucky! My husband an i would like to buy, but it seems impossible right now out here right now. We have an incredible rental right now and are hoping to grow our money for a few years and that also the market will calm down a bit in a few years or some other miracle will happen! Or we’d love to just rent this house forever! But that’s probably not possible. It belongs to a good friend who eventually wants to give it to his college aged daughter. But we have it at least for the next few years.
  • My energy level and mood are VERY affected by the number of daylight hours, so if I had my choice I would have two houses- one in like Australia, and one somewhere up north, maybe Maine, and spend half the year in each… perpetual summer ☀️ 😎

I live in New England and the perpetual gray of the winter wears on me…
  • @blanket_girl I feel you with the new England winters. I can usually make it to March and then I'm just done and need it to be June.
  • @blanket_girl
I hear you with winters and the SADs. We're in Minnesota and the winters get LONG!

We took our family on a trip to Aruba over the holidays this year and my husband and I decided that's where we would like to retire. 85 degrees and sunny all year is fine with me! But until then, I really don't want to move ever again. We lived in our last house for 10 years and just moved last summer. I don't know how folks do that regularly! Much respect, it must force people to be super organized!!
  • Originally from the PNW but living in Northern Norway. If I could move anywhere in would be back to WA. Specially, to my parents house! They live about 15 mins out of town on 11 acres surrounded by trees so you can't see the neighbors (though their not very far away) in a quiet neighborhood. I grew up there and would love to raise my kids there. I love Norway also so it would be bittersweet moving but like many others said, winter is just too long! Crocuses finally start blooming mid to end of May and we're lucky if we get 80° in the summer. My husband and I have actually recently been talking about moving and looking into getting him a green card. It's a LONG process but if at all possible I'd like to be settled before my oldest starts school. She's 14 months so we have a few years😜
  • Last year we moved from a small mountain town outside Lake Tahoe to Costa Rica. It’s been something we’ve dreamed of for many years and we are loving it here!
