My mom had a home birth with my little brother. I think she preferred that to the others. The midwife and hospitals were an hour and a half away, which would be a little far for my preference, but we lived in a small town, so it was either the midwife or my mom (in labor) driving that far. She went into labor in the evening at a 4th of July party. We got home and she put us kids to bed except my oldest sister (teenager,) who watched it happen. Things were progressing quickly (probably has a lot to do with it being baby number 5,) The midwife said her car hit 90 mph on the way! She made it just in time. The only reason he didn’t come before she arrived was because he had his hand by his head! He arrived at 10:00pm sharp, so my mom was happy that we were able to see her when we woke up. Myself and my sister were very stranger shy. A friend stayed during the night to help her with us if necessary, but things went quickly!
One of my best friends had a home birth with her second, and she enjoyed the fact that it was in a comfortable place. Things went smoothly for her and her midwife lived much closer! 😅
Even though my preference is a medicated birth at the hospital, I know many people who did home births, and they are each unique, like any birth, but I think everyone enjoyed the choice they made, the money they saved, and the comfortable environment!
ETA: I've never had a baby, but I wanted to look into homebirth as an option. I have no idea where to start though.
Everyone I know who had a home birth, had either a Doula or a Midwife. For my prenatal care, I have a doctor. I think if I were to go with a home birth, I would start communicating with a midwife or doula. I don’t think my mom saw a doctor for any pregnancies after the first. She always had a midwife for checkups. You may also choose to do some of both where you do have twins. You could get to know a few and see what their experience and rates are. I would recommend asking if they’ve delivered twins, and what their protocols are if anything was going differently than planned, and if they’ve worked alongside doctors before. I know you’ll have your own questions, but don’t be afraid to look up and reach out to midwives in the area! It’s good to get a lot of perspectives, so you could look up videos of ladies sharing home birth experiences on YouTube or how to find a good home birth option or something! Just make sure that none of them are trying to be scary or dramatic. Some doctors are really supportive of home births (although I’m not sure that any deliver home births.) Others may be a little slow to hop on board, especially with twins, but don’t let anyone scare you out of exploring allll of your options and rights to choose!😊 I don’t have any personal experience in this for my own pregnancy, but my mom and friends chose midwives and doulas from the start, and many of them have home birth options. You can always switch providers to more closely provide you with the experience you want, although many would recommend sooner in the pregnancy than later, so you can be sure to get to know the person going through it with you!🥰 I hope my small amount of insight helps give you an idea of where to start!
I haven’t had one but my first was a med-free water birth at a free-standing birth center with just a midwife and her assistant attending the birth. It was a great experience. My 2nd was in the hospital because the birth center closed, I definitely preferred the home-like environment with minimal medical involvement. My hospital birth went fine but it just all felt very clinical and I never felt like I could truly relax. This time around I either want to do a home birth or a hospital birth with a doula.

First step is find a midwife in your area! You won’t need an OB. If you have more than one in your area you can interview them and see which is a better fit.
Mama natural has a birthing class online that is amazing and you can learn more about it too.
@mamato4arrows oh yeah, the current hospital situation is definitely a motivating factor for me considering the home birth. My midwife that I had at the birth center actually started a home birth practice after it closed so I would definitely choose her if I decide to go that route. The other thing is that I really love my OB but I know there’s no guarantee she’ll be the one on call when I’m in labor. I need to crunch the numbers to figure out what I would be paying in hospital vs at home. Have you had a home birth before or would this be your first time?

I am currently reading Mama Natural ( week by week pregnancy guide) that walks you through steps for making all these decisions.
@mamato4arrows suggested the mama natural online class. I have signed up for this but have not done it yet.
This is my first and I was planning for an unmedicated birth. No options for home births within 300 miles of my home. Now that I know it's twins I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing!
@coco2787 this will be our first homebirth! I had a hospital vbac with my last son, and it did not go as I had hoped. My first babies are twins, and were breech, so I delivered csec

Oh that is so amazing coco! The midwife we chose doesn’t have a birthing center so home is our only option.
