Early pregnancy & antibiotics

Hi all!

So I’m a paranoid first timer and have been experiencing some pressure in my pelvic area and bladder. This sensation along with the increased fluid intake and increased need to pee is making me nervous I could be getting a uti. I don’t have any other uti symptoms like burning or anything like that but it’s hard not to worry it could be coming. I’m allergic to amoxicillin and after doing some research it seems like a lot of the other antibiotics that are prescribed for uti’s and what not can be dangerous and risky to an early developing fetus. Wondering what thoughts you folks might have about antibiotics and what your experience has been if you’ve have any? Thanks so much ☺️

Re: Early pregnancy & antibiotics

  • Nearly all antibiotics are category C, which usually means they don't have evidence that it is harmful, but also don't have definitive evidence that it's not.  Because I'm prone to chronic UTIs, throughout my pregnancy last time I was on Keflex (first a "treatment" course and then a "prophylactic" dose for the rest of the time), which is one of the ones that is considered to be safer.  If you think you have a UTI, you'll probably need to treat it, so talk to your doctor.  However, if it's just the constant having to pee without any other symptoms, it's probably just the typical early pregnancy urgency/frequency, which does eventually get better.
    Current pregnancy -
First BFP on 1/4/22.  Due date 9/13/22.

Four prior losses, no living children - 1 first trimester miscarriage, 1 blighted ovum, 1 chemical, and one extreme premature live birth daughter who died at 15 days old.

@raychelwhite I think you need to discuss this with your doctor and potentially go in for a urine test if you feel you may be coming down with something.

ETA: Also, I feel you will get more responses to your questions if you instead post under the Randoms or Great Big Question Thread. It gets muddy around here if people go making threads left and right with no rhyme or reason as to why. It's also much easier to get to know all of the members when you join in on existing threads; making connections is the number one desire of this board.

  • @raychelwhite def a question best for your doctor! The great thing about being pregnant is that you can call and there will always be someone to answer your question right away, or to call you back within a reasonable amount of time. During pregnancy, there is never a such thing as a stupid question. Good luck!

Thank you all! I did get a urine test done today and they didn’t see anything at the office so not an obvious uti but they’re sending it out for a culture just to be safe. The dr prescribed me nitrofurantoin but wanted to prescribe me amoxicillin until she realized I was slightly allergic…after googling I’ve read some things that say don’t take nitrofurantoin during early pregnancy and I guess the American gynecology association says don’t take it. Grrr. She wanted me to start the nitrofurantoin right away but I’m thinking I’m going to hold off on taking them until the results from the culture come back or if my symptoms get any worse. I’m not really into the idea of taking an antibiotic without a confirmed diagnosis anyways.

This was done at planned parenthood just as it was the quickest place I could be seen and I haven’t established an obgyn yet. I did call the obgyn I’m scheduled to see next month and they said they couldn’t give me medical advice until they actually see me, is that typical?

And thanks for the reminder @trapperkeeper87 I’m still learning how these forums work so my apologies!! Next time I will definitely post my questions to that thread!!! 😊
  • @raychelwhite it’s good that you’re aware of all of these things! I have a severe allergy to 4 different antibiotics and it’s good to discuss with your doctor because there are several instances during pregnancy and postpartum where antibiotics may be part of normal treatment. For example, in the third trimester, all pregnant women are tested for group B strep. It’s pretty common and if you test positive, you are asked to report to the hospital early when you’re in labor to be given antibiotics. So it’s good to know your allergy and keep this in mind to discuss with your doctor about how it may affect other aspects of your pregnancy.
  • @theblondebump oh man yeah I’m lucky I’m only slightly allergic to the one but I think it means I can’t have the whole penicillin group which sucks! I only had one reaction once (itchy rash on my legs) but the dr I saw today said that was enough not to prescribe it again! I’ll make sure to tell the providers I see about this allergy!! Thank you so much for your input 😊
  • I had 2 utis with my last pregnancy and both times they prescribed penicillin. I guess that's not helpful for you though.
  • @raychelwhite
I'm also allergic to amoxicillin (rash). When I've needed antibiotics in the past, I've been prescribed Clindamycin (generic or otherwise). I had my wisdom teeth removed on Dec. 27th (two days after my positive OPK), and used the antibiotics as instructed. So far we're trending fine. I didn't think we even had a chance this cycle, but we'll see when we finally get to go in for an ultrasound!

I understand you couldn't be seen right away, but I'd encourage a visit about your possible UTI situation separate from your first screen for pregnancy. Make sure you choose an institution you trust, so you don't waste your time going in just to come out with no faith in their verdicts. Since it's not painful and there aren't other UTI indicators, hopefully it's just having to pee a lot - thanks progesterone. Good luck!
  • @leannechristina thank you so much!! The wait for the ultrasound is BRUTAL lol. Yeah I have a visit at my pcp next week for a regular physical but the symptoms are improving and not getting any worse so fingers crossed it’s just the dang progesterone 🤞 wishing you all the best as well🥰
