Gender - Surprise!

edited January 2022 in September 2022 Moms
Looking for advice from moms who decided to be surprised by the gender. Was it hard to find gender neutral items? Any stores/companies you recommend? We are debating waiting til birth to find out, but when I look at anything baby related, I feel like it is either obviously girl or boy. Any suggestions appreciated!

Re: Gender - Surprise!

  • I feel like there are lots of gender neutral items available and gender neutral is in style now. Lots of gray, black, olive green, browns, etc. Also, colors technically don't have a gender so go with what you like 😉 are you thinking clothes or furniture? I think we might need to start a thread for brands/sites that sell quality baby items. I've done a ton of online window shopping but will need to go back and find the names cuz nothing is coming to mind now😂 you can also check out etsy. They have a lot of cool stuff.

  • Thanks! That’s a great post idea! Still trying to get the hang of this. I thought I posted this under the STM thread, but failed 😂 Also can’t figure out why it won’t change my username!
Anyway, I’m thinking more of clothes. I have ideas for a nursery, but whenever I see clothes, I might find a cute green outfit, but it’s super frilly and girly. I’m just having a hard time, but maybe I’m not looking at the right places.

  • Thanks! Hopefully it works 🤞🏼
  • I’m a FTM but I’m also team green and have been on the hunt for gender neutral baby clothes (that preferably aren’t just grey). So far the best source I’ve found has been old navy! And since I started searching, I’ve been getting more ads for other fun companies:

https://www.miniolie.com has lots of super cute stuff!! But it’s a bit in the pricier side.

https://adeandayo.com is a kids clothing company founded by a Nigerian-Canadian woman who wanted to bring the bright, vibrant colors and patterns of African textiles to kids clothes! And they’re SO FUN! Great option if you’re sick of all the grey/beige gender neutral options and want some COLOR.

Hope this helps! I’ll update if I find anything else!
  • Colored organics, Kate Quinn, and Loulou & Co are a few that come to mind now.

  • @virgovirgo I like primary for clothes of just colors with no gender. I love all of their rainbow stuff. I wish I had known about them as a ftm most of my newborn to 3 month stuff is all gray, blue and yellow because I'm always team green. I will say I do have plenty of girl stuff in those sizes too after having 2 girls now, but I have enough to clothe a baby in just gender neutral for that time period too.
  • I was team green with my daughter and honestly, I would recommend that you only stock up on gender neutral for newborn and 0-3 months. By then the baby will be here and you'll be able to buy whatever your heart desires - sex specific or sex neutral. Just my two cents.

This. Just buy a couple outfits in size NB to 3 months max. My baby grew so fast the first year + I had to be mindful of seasons (we have 4). I had no idea what size she would be by the time summer came.

  • @jhysmath Yes primary! I forgot!

Also just got an instagram ad for this one that looked cute (I’m telling you, this is all my ads now, they’re doing the work for me haha)

Ya I think I might just wait until right before baby comes to buy newborn clothes so that I can still be in the return window if they’re too small or don’t get used.
  • Goumi kids is another good one - they’re clothes are SO soft and stretchy and last so long! I was team green with my first and I love the gender neutral sleepers I ordered from Goumi. I had no trouble finding cute gender neutral stuff. If you want stuff on the cheaper side, Target and Old Navy are great options. I think most of the higher end options I ordered were more gender specific after baby was born, except for Goumi. Somewhere in between - Burt’s Bees, I really like all the stuff I have from there. Good luck! Like others have said, don’t feel the need to go over board before baby arrives. In the time of online shopping, it’s really easy to stock up after baby arrives and just get a handful of things before baby gets here.

All babies are different, but mine wore newborn and 0-3 months for a long time! She’s 9 months now and still wears 3-6 months in some brands haha. Also, all brands fit differently too, which is kind of annoying.
  • @theblondebump they are all so different in sizes. My first was tiny like that and then my second was huge. Their birthdays are 7 days apart, and I figured everything wild like up seasons wise, but nope. My second didn't fit newborn clothes ever, and then by the time she was 2 months she SAS wearing 6 month clothes. She's slowed down now though, and has been wearing 2t since her first birthday. I'm hoping to keep her in 2t a bit longer seeing how the 3 year old is still wearing 3t 😂
  • 100% agree on not stocking up on clothes too much.  Before my son was born my mom bought so many clothes in sizes ranging from NB all the way to 18 months.  Then my son was born and he was so tiny we had to start with premie sizes.  He was 4 months before he even fit into the NB clothes.  So many things ended up  just not being seasonally appropriate by the time they fit him so they ended up not being worn.
