August 2022 Moms

When is your first OB appointment?

First pregnancy here! Wondering at what week you have your first prenatal appointment. At first outreach, my doctor recommended at 11 weeks but I insisted on going earlier since I’m anxious to hear any updates and to make sure it’s a right fit because it’s a new OB. They said any earlier than 8 weeks wouldn’t make sense. Unfortunately that makes it post Christmas and I don’t want to share the news until at least after our first visit. Thanks!

Re: When is your first OB appointment?

  • I had my first scan on Nov29 and we have another Dec 7. Because of the FET and multiples and age I am high risk so it’s every week for me it seems.

  • Hi Knottie. First things first, congrats and welcome to the group! It would be really great if you changed your name and posted an intro so we can all get to know you and recognize you more easily. There’s instructions on how to do that in the “read before posting” thread. I recommend you reading through that as it has some good guidelines and info on how the boards work.

Baby number 5 here. It’s pretty common to not be seen before 8 weeks. They typically have you wait to account for late implantation and to be sure they can see something. My first appointment is 12/22 and that will be 7ish weeks. I have had multiple losses and that is more so the reason I’m headed in early.

Pregnancy is exciting to share even post Christmas. You’ll find the right moment. I always prefer not to share on holidays when the focus should not just be on us. Good luck and try to keep yourself busy and active with things you enjoy; that helps pass the time.

  • My first appointment is Monday but it’s just basically a pregnancy confirmation, no ultrasound. I also have a history of loss so they’ll be running betas for me. I plan to ask for an u/s for the week before Christmas. My doctor has always seen me a little early and is very accommodating though. As @and_peggy said, it’s normal to not be seen until 8+ weeks.
  • My first appointment is 12/17, so just shy of 7 weeks.  I’ve had betas run twice to confirm already.  I’m AMA which may be part of the reason why they let me come earlier, I also have a good relationship with the OB.  But after 8 weeks is pretty standard.  Congrats!
  • My first appointment is 12/20, I will be 8 weeks, and I cannot wait to see the little gummy bear!!! It felt so far away when I scheduled, but, I’m a teacher, and the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas are so chaotic, it kind of is making time pass a little faster. Either that or I’ve just been too busy! Haha
  • My first appointment is 12/23.  My doc typically has me in at 8 weeks then again at 12.

  • My OB does first prenatal appointments around 10-12 weeks which is nuts to me! That's so late, imo. I insisted on at least having a scan to confirm since I've **TW** had a recent loss.*** They'll at least do a scan at 6 weeks. So I'm going in on the 14th just to see if there's anything there. I totally understand why they don't do earlier appointments normally, there's not much the can do to prevent things from happening. Our bodies are gonna either grow and progress, or not. :( All we can do is obsess. lol.
  • I unfortunately don’t have any different news than the other ladies.
Congratulations though! It’s always such a difficult time waiting here in the beginning.

My first appointment is at 7 weeks (12/21), but my doctor schedules at 6 weeks.

  • My first OB appointment is 12/14 but it is just a pregnancy confirmation right around the 6 week mark. This is earlier than my previous pregnancies but I've experienced multiple losses so I imagine my NP will want to run betas and make sure the pregnancy is progressing normally. My first pregnancy I don't think I saw an OB until closer to 9 weeks.
  • Mine is 01/13, which is 11 weeks. It’s my second pregnancy and the day worked for me, so I accepted gracefully lol 😉 Trying not to loose my mind in the meantime!
  • @starkette glad you advocated for yourself!!! My sister said the same thing… her first pregnancy, she was seen at 8 weeks, but her second they wouldn’t see her since 12. Seems so silly to me. 12 weeks is a long time to make a mother agonize.
  • My first appointment is 1/7, and I'll be about 10 weeks. Has anyone gotten a beta test done at a lab on their own? I considered it to see if my HCG levels are on track, but then I looked up an HCG chart online and the levels seemed all over the place, so I'm not sure I could interpret the results myself.
  • @becks105 10-12 weeks is such a long time to see baby for the first time.  :'( I understand it, but I also hate it. But since I have family coming for Christmas and I want to tell them at that point (I'll be almost 8 weeks) I wanted to have one scan at least. I've found if you ask for an ultrasound for verification earlier than 10 weeks, they usually will schedule one.

@onlygooddays08 yea the range can be so wide, I wouldn't know either but I guess if it keeps going up that's a good thing. It's supposed to double daily or something.
  • I had my first appointment at my birth center this past Thursday. Full tour, met the midwives, protocol, health and birth history, paperwork signing and all that. They offered me another appointment this week but I decided to wait a few more weeks so I'll go back in on the 21st.
  • Mine is January 6. I will be 8 weeks!! I get a sono at that time. I think after that we will tell the kids.
  • Mine is December 27th. Which puts me at around 7 weeks. This is my first time too.
  • @starkette I go in 13 days! Not that I’m counting 😂😂 I’m just dying to see that this little bean is where it’s supposed to be and doing what it’s supposed to be!! I hope then I’ll finally be able to relax lol Every day that passes I feel a bit better. I will be 8 weeks by Christmas, and we are hosting hubby’e extended family. I’m trying to decide if we tell them then, or wait till 12 weeks. I want to wait, just hoping nobody picks up that I'm not drinking lol
  • Called a clinic and got an appointment for 12/14! They'll do a confirmation test and ultrasound. I'll be 7w1d so a heartbeat will at least be able to be heard, if it exists. *TW* Trying not to get my hopes up since last time I had a MMC with absolutely no warning.

@becks105 you can get a bottle of alcohol removed wine. That's what I did for Thanksgiving. I filled my glass before anyone could notice and sipped it through dinner. No one (except my husband) was the wiser.

  • @becks105 haha I'm definitely *not* counting down too.  ;)

@returning_bump_memberI'm a little worried my appointment will be to early to see much (I'll be 6w2d). But I'm not gonna cancel now! The internet says I should be able to see the heartbeat. Fingers crossed. **Tw** last time I went I was surprised to see I had miscarried, there was nothing to see on the ultrasound.**
  • @starkette and @returning_bump_member wishing the best for all the moms, but thinking about you two specifically. Warm thoughts that this appointment brings comfort and happy results <3

My appointment has seemed like a decade away, but we have NY this weekend, come back on Monday then ultrasound Tuesday! Hopefully that’ll make things fly by. One week :)

  • @dimeadozen it does feel good having one behind me. But the time will go by fast since you'll be doing something fun! That trip sounds fantastic. Have a blast!
  • January 4, right after Christmas break!
  • Dec 30 is my first appointment. Just had blood work this morning and waiting for an ultrasound appointment (prob in jan)
  • I had my pregnancy confirmation appointment yesterday and have 3 weeks until my first ultrasound - I’ll be 8 weeks then!
  • My office doesn't see people until 10+ weeks, so I won't be in until late January. It feels like forever to wait.
  • I had my first visit yesterday to meet the midwife and confirm the pregnancy and do the blood draws. Ultrasound is scheduled for 1/11 and feels like an eternity away, not just 4 weeks.
  • I just had my third beta this morning and I’m anxiously awaiting results. I still feel pregnant so I keep telling myself that but it’s hard waiting to hear. If all goes well I’ll have my first ultrasound on 8/27 at 6w5d.
  • My first appointment is close to 8 weeks. My appointment is 1/13.
  • Mine is scheduled for 1/27. I should be around nine and a half weeks by then. It seems like ages until then! An ultrasound was mentioned as well at that date when I made the appointment so that’s exciting :)

First appointment is Jan 7th. I'll be 8 1/2 weeks. Super nervous as I had a missed MC last May identified at my 8 week US. Weird feeling to be excited and have dread for the same appointment.
  • @kbtt2022 good luck tomorrow. So sorry about your MC, hoping for the best at this appointment! :)

  • First appointment was about at about 5 weeks to confirm pregnancy and my doc also did a vaginal swab, but that doesn’t sound standard from what I have read. First dating ultrasound is Jan 11.
  • I’m due August 31st (We found out on Christmas!) My confirmation/information appointment was yesterday at 6 weeks 1 day. My first ultrasound is the day before 8 weeks and my husband and I will get to see the baby and hear the heartbeat together. I can’t wait for that moment!! I have another appointment to check vitals the day before 12 Weeks. I have the NIPT scheduled for then, but plan to get my blood drawn sooner, so we know the gender when we announce!
  • I've been in twice for blood tests (HCG) already and have my first ultrasound on Wednesday 1/12. I'll be 7w3d.
  • I am seen at a fertility clinic so I had two HCG draws (+ progesterone) three days apart right after finding out, then a quick appointment and confirmation ultrasound at 6 weeks. I have another ultrasound and appointment at 9 weeks (next Monday), then will have a full regular OB visit and another ultrasound at 12 weeks, then will resume a normal monthly appointment schedule and will just have an anatomy scan, assuming everything is progressing normally.
