2nd Trimester

Baby bump or not ?

So I’m pregnant with my second kiddo and I’m looking a little pregnant at this point at 14 weeks 6 days. I’m so confused because I didn’t show with my first until I was 5 almost 6 months. I’ve grown a belly but it’s soft like fat not firm. I will admit I put on some weight right before I got pregnant but I’ve been working out like crazy every since I got the positive at 4 weeks. I do cardio 30 min every day, weight lifting, hitt training lol, all of it and haven’t lost or gained a pound yet. Why is my belly blowing up like a fat kid on summer break ? Again it’s not a hard firm belly it’s squishy and i can’t quite tuck it into my pants because it hurts. Is this normal ?

There is a huge range of what is “normal,” but this sounds perfectly normal to me. In general, women start to show earlier with subsequent pregnancies. Also, pregnancies are different. Your body will not respond the exact same way every time.

I’m concerned about the way you talk about working out. It’s great and healthy to continue working out throughout pregnancy, but the way you speak about starting to “work out like crazy” after getting the positive sounds very unhealthy.

  • @alanarobert Yeah... a lot women start showing a lot earlier with subsequent pregnancies, like @coldlife2 said. Getting a belly in 2nd trimester? I would call that normal. Getting exercise while pregnant is great, but I hate to break it to you - your belly will grow while pregnant no matter what you do.

First of all, the fat shaming is not cool.
Second of all, my stomach was never really hard & firm until closer to my due date. Like when it’s stretched out all the way it’s not as squishy, but in the beginning it’s definitely soft. I started showing around 12 weeks with my first so it’s definitely possible at 14w with your second. Your uterus pops above the pelvis around 12 weeks so not really sure why you’re confused that you have a bump.
Make sure your exercise is approved by your doctor as well. Unless you were always one to “workout like crazy”.

What a disgusting statement! Seriously!?  What a aweful statement!

Guess what you are fricken pregnant you are going to hace your belly will expand even if its just BLOAT! It should not be a suprise if its your second pregnancy! Yes! It can be "squishy."

Embrace your pregnancy and feel blessed that you have a "squishy " tummy that is growing a BABY!

  • I wasn’t trying to say I’m confused for blowing up, I’m aware I’m going to get a baby belly. My confusion is wether or not it’s normal for it to be completely soft. I have a belly but there’s no firmness.

There’s was no fat shaming here so please don’t take my comment out of context. It was just a dramatic flare on how I am feeling right now. I will just wait until next month to ask my doctor, I feel this group may not be the right place to ask questions.

For the fitness part I have always been physically active, I’m an athlete, I played rugby. I just stepped up my game a little and had this cleared by my doctor.

No body shaming - sure "why is my belly blowing up like a fat kid on summer break" that is an aweful comment to make!  Disgusting!  There are overweight kids for MANY REASONS THEY CAN NOT CONTROL! (Health issues, depression, parents can't afford healthy foods so the resort to the 99 cent box of mac and cheese because it costs $5 for a box of mixed greens, genetics, etc) SO YEST THIS STATEMENT IS NASTY! Don't try playing it off!
  • The medical answer is that your muscles are not as tight as before you had any kids. It’s normal for it to be squishy, the baby is still small, and most of whats accounted for right now is amniotic fluid, and general expanding of your uterus.

I’m currently pregnant with baby 5 and I’m not going to be able to hide this much longer, even though I’m barely 7 weeks. I haven’t gained any weight but my body is expanding.

  • The bloating hit me first  (this is my first). And it made jeans uncomfortable right away. My belly is also a little soft in places now 25 weeks, because I had a tiny bit of belly to start with. I think it won't all be super hard unless you were rocking a six pack at the start.
  • @and_peggy
I have been weirded out because this is my 4th pregnancy but my youngest is almost 9 years old. I feel huge. Like I did at 7 months pregnant with him lol
  • My first one and I  barely have a bump at all
  • I didn't think you said anything wrong, I'm sorry you got backlash. This should be a safe place for all of us to express ourselves without judgment.
For the record, I think your body is doing exactly what it needs to and you don't need to worry! Pregnancy bumps are a miracle, squishy or firm :)
