Gestational Diabetes- Recommendations?

I didn’t have GDM with my son but evidently baby girl needs to be more dramatic. I’m trying to be optimistic and frame this as a good way to prioritize nutrition in the final stretch. Anyone have resources or cookbooks they’ve appreciated? I have the Whole30 cookbook, which is good for some ideas I can tweak.

I’ll meet with a dietician later this week but interested in hearing others’ experiences, too.

Re: Gestational Diabetes- Recommendations?

  • I had the same thing. My oldest I was borderline but passing and my second I failed but only by a little. Your doctor will likely refer you to a nutritionist or maternal fetal medicine specialist for proper training if they are not properly equipped. That will likely answer a lot of questions.

    My midwife recommended this book
Real Food for Gestational Diabetes: An Effective Alternative to the Conventional Nutrition Approach https://smile.amazon.com/dp/0986295000/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_G7S9KSFZKFRFEEG9DSCG

Diabete, low carb and keto recipes are good too with some modifications, but make sure you are still eating the appropriate amount of carbs as baby needs them to grow properly.

My challenge was breakfast. I’d spike if I had coffee and breakfast at the same time but if I broke them up into smaller meals I did better. Eating a protein heavy bedtime snack can help with fasting sugars too.

And if ultimately you need medication to control your sugars know that is ok and normal. None of this is by any fault of your own. GD is a result of your placenta and hormones messing with the effectiveness of your insulin. You may be higher risk for diabetes, but it is not a certainty. And it does lead to a more healthful diet to help baby grow and you to feel better.

Let me know if your have other questions, I remember it was quite overwhelming, especially finding out during the holidays.

  • I’m so sorry that you’re going through this. I myself have gestational diabetes. Going on 4 weeks now. I actually lost weight. When you take all the fun good stuff out of your diet your left with meat, cheese, veggies, nuts and a little fruit. If you’re looking for a good easy snack try skinny pop popcorn and almond flour crackers. I just got “the healthy everyday kitchen” and have baked a cake from it! Good luck on your journey! I’m viewing mine as a great kick start to my postpartum healthy diet!
  • Thank you @meggyme and knottie…, it’s really helpful to hear from others. I have a nurse visit tomorrow to go over the blood sugar testing and a video visit Monday with a nutritionist. In the meantime I’ve been sticking to proteins, whole grains, berries, nuts. I’m reminding myself these are good habits to develop regardless of GD diagnosis so hoping to keep that positive perspective. Thanks again!
  • I had moderate GD with both my pregnancies. I was able to control it with diet. I could eat as much protein and vegetables as I wanted, and I could have 1 cup of starches with every meal so I'd measure out a cup of pasta or 2 slices of whole grain bread and I was fine. I measured my blood sugar with a glucose monitor for each meal. Your nutritionist will give you some guidelines to follow. It's really not that bad :) I demanded a box of donuts after I gave birth!
