1st Trimester

Cold medicine

Hey guys!
I am currently 9w 2d pregnant, I have had a severe cough the past few nights and I can’t get ahold of my OB. I was curious if anyone knew if Delsym that has no pain reliever or alcohol in it was safe to take just to get a bit of relief and sleep? Please help!

Re: Cold medicine

  • I don’t think it is safe, but I’m not a medical professional. Does your doctor have an on call line? If not, you can ask a pharmacist what would be safe to take.

  • Double check with your doctor but I think the main ingredient in Delsym is dextromethorpan and I used that (Robitussin) when I was sick in 1st trimester. Your doctor should be able to give you a list of safe meds but the below is from the Cleveland Clinic and I reference them sometimes when I want to double check what’s (probably) safe. Remember that your doctor knows your full history, risks, etc, and they may recommend other options specific to YOU. That’s why talking to your doctor is important and not just going off internet folks or googling. Feel better soon!

  • Thank you both so much! I talked to the pharmacist today and thankfully delsym is safe to take! However I don’t think it’s working. I tried to call my OB on the call line and the lady said she had no medical experience so it’s basically no help. Thank you guys again!!
