Re: Weekly Randoms 12/13

  • I teach 5th grade. One week left till winter break. One week left till my first ultrasound. Not drinking coffee in the first trimester. Can’t drink wine for obvious reasons. Not sure I will survive 😩
  • @daffodil_shoe That’s such great news! I always wanted to be a carrier, what an amazing thing you’re doing!

@becks105 I don’t envy you, those weeks before break must be tough, even in the best circumstances!

My random is that my 2 year old picked up hand foot and mouth disease from daycare. I feel so awful for him, he’s a mess. He was up all night crying. Should be a fun week trying to meet work deadlines while taking care of him.
  • @maggiemadeit SO SORRY. HFM is the worst. Pretty sure my daughter had that earlier this year… then pretty sure I got it. It was rough.

@maggiemadeit ugh sorry to hear about your babe. I hope it passes quickly! My oldest got it when I was this pregnant with my second and it was so miserable for him. So I fully understand and what you’re going through.
  • @dimeadozen Sounds like a fun trip! We have a dream of traveling to different cities to see every Major League Baseball team, but we’ve only done 2 so far.
  • @maggiemadeit how cool! Who’s your favorite team? Which games did you go see?
My husband was a big rangers fan in the past, but our carrier quit streaming the games a few years back so we’ve fallen away from MLB some. I think we’re bringing the girls to a Astro’s game this coming year!

  • @maggiemadeit it’s been really rewarding so far! I can’t wait for delivery to be able to hand the dads their baby! But oh noooooo about the HFM 😩

@dimeadozen have fun in NYC! I haven’t been there since middle school. Would like to go back someday.
  • @dimeadozen The Red Sox are our local team, and we’ve also been to the Nationals. I was at Astros stadium a few years back, it’s beautiful!
  • @starkette I know we’re supposed to keep comments out of the ultrasound thread so - Congrats on being the first one!! How reassuring to hear little baby’s heartbeat. Thrilled for you!

  • I know y’all are so excited about my sickness saga so I’m just here for the update. I took my 5 year old in today. She’s been really sick and she actually had pneumonia. Got her antibiotics and hoping that she gets back to herself quickly. Ugh

  • @and_peggy oh no! Thank goodness you took her in.
  • @and_peggy oh no! hopefully YD recovers quickly!
  • @and_peggy I hope she recovers soon! That's certainly stressful. <3

@dimeadozen thank you! It was a relief. My OB was happy to see me back....**TW** I had my loss in october **TW End** and it was nice to see the little blobby bean and the flicker of the heart valves. Going back in two week to make sure there's growth.
  • @becks105. I am in a similar situation except with 4th graders!  I am so ready for winter break!

  • @and_peggy having a 5 yo at home as well, your update really hit me. I hope she improves quickly now with the antibiotics and is back to herself in no time! Having sick littles is miserable!
  • Omg just ate a huge bowl of cottage cheese and tomatoes and I'm in heaven. It's way too early for cravings but if I didn't get it I would've thrown a fit. I NEEDED IT. And it was next level amazing so it's gotta be hormones.
  • @starkette to say someone enjoyed a bowl of cottage cheese, I’d definitely blame it on hormones. Haha, kidding.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @dimeadozen I generally like cottage cheese, but this was much more than that. Haha! I'm just glad I at something without feeling sick.
  • So bummed y’all. I called to make sure that my midwife is still under my insurance. Spoke to a receptionist who said she doesn’t have a specific npi number, there is a number for the group of doctors. I asked why that was, and she said “well you will see everyone on your visits, and you may not have your actual midwife deliver you. You won’t have her cell anymore… I’m just so sad. My midwife used to be part of a small private practice, they hospital she delivered in shut down their maternity wing a few weeks after my son was delivered. She’s now part of a big group. Sucks, I felt so safe with her. I’m at a loss on what to do.
  • @elliespen I'm sorry. That seriously is a bummer. I actually had a similar experience to what you will be having last time. I had a obgyn but I saw everyone in the office, and my actual obgyn didn't even deliver me... it was just another obgyn from the practice. It is 100% a bummer as you develop a relationship with your doctor/midwife and yet there are zero guarantees they are the person there for you when it matters. I'm really not a fan of the experience but I haven't found a place locally that guarantees that small practice experience.
  • @elliespen I'm sorry, that really sucks. That seems like the model these days, with multiple providers sharing a practice and patients. Just a thought, are you in the position to add a doula to your care? Maybe that could give you more 1:1 pregnancy and birth support, and the assurance of seeing someone you know and trust on the big day?

With my second I ended up having a midwife I'd never met at delivery, and she ended up saving my son's life that night. It wasn't what we'd planned, but I am forever grateful she was on shift <3
  • @elliespen you can absolutely see her at every single visit even if she probably won't deliver for you! My doctor works for a huge practice and there are some in there I don't like, but it really isn't necessary to rotate around to all the doctors during your pregnancy (stressful!) just so you will have seen the delivering doc before. I delivered #1 at a major university hospital where I saw my normal ob at very visit throughout the pregnancy, and I was told that anyone from a list of 38 doctors might be the one who delivered, and then it ended up being so busy that day they pulled the head of the residency program to deliver. Then after I moved and was pregnant with #2 I wasn't at a major university hospital anymore but it's a large ob/gyn practice where they recommend rotating around, and I was just like, "no, I want to see my doctor every time." They might frown at me a little, but I was able to see him every visit except for a few, where I went to my second choice.

tl;dr: You should just ask to see the midwife you like at every visit.
  • After 3 negative COVID tests I got a 4th one as positive 😫 I am feeling just fine! But the uncertainty of what this means is adding to my anxiety of a viable pregnancy. I have had brown spotting this week and just feeling like this is not a good added detail. My first appointment is the 27th and it cannot be here soon enough!
  • Thanks for your sentiments! @maggiemadeit, that’s what I was thinking- look for a doula. And I’ve been toying around with a homebirth, just feel like I would have to do some convincing with my husband.

@wisewitch222 I asked that, and the woman said that my midwife wouldn’t be available till my third visit. It’s “just how they do things”. Really was not a fan of this woman and her matter of fact way of delivering this news. I think what I’m mourning the most is that my first two deliveries were basically “let’s get the baby out”. Which is fine. But with the birth of my son, I really appreciated the process my midwife took, it was all on my speed and really she empowered me to deliver naturally. Just feel like the wind has been taken out of my sails.
  • @elliespen could you talk to your midwife and get her to okay that form of scheduling? The office I go to is pretty faceless and corporate and that is also the way they do things there, but when I insisted on scheduling with my doctor they always did/do unless he's not available when I need an appointment. (Delivery is a different story, though. I don't actually care who delivers and I just assume it will be someone new. To me it's important to have the same person guiding me through my care throughout the pregnancy.)
  • @elliespen i don't know of any practice in the balt/dc metro where you are guaranteed to get your practitioner for delivery. i think that's just the way it's going with costs to run medical practices and insurance. i was able to see my ob for all my vists but 2 when she was on vacation, but alas i gave birth with first 30 minutes before she came on call that day. and the fact that it was her on call day was sheer luck. i had a total stranger dr, not even with my practice, oversee my delivery. i totally get wanting to see the same dr, and i was happy to have her for the appointment part - and once labor came it was just time to roll with the punches!
  • My 5yo is home sick and put on homeward bound (like the original one) and here I am laying here crying. For no reason. 🙄 Hormones are the bestttt.
  • Ugh @paytonpedro I love that movie so much! I don’t even know how many times I watched it as a child.
  • @dimeadozen. Have a great trip!  Let me know if you need any restaurant or activity recommendations.  I live just outside the city (in NJ).  Are you going to see the tree?
  • @lmaplejc thank you! Restaurant recommendations would be great! We’re going to see the tree, 9/11 museum, Bryant Park Christmas market and maybe a few other things. We want to try some traditional New York pizza, but don’t have anything else on the list.
We’ll be in Newark for our flights and the Cowboy’s game is in NJ!

  • I just finished fighting off norovirus (started feeling nauseated Wednesday evening, got worse throughout the night). All I consumed yesterday was one saltine and a glass of water. I finally felt better today. Except I just hit a wave of nausea…norovirus coming back for another battle, or pregnancy sickness? Hmmm 🤔
  • @daffodil_shoe Aww, I'm sorry. Norovirus can last for a week with symptoms subsiding and coming back. Feel better soon! 🤢
  • @daffodil_shoe I’m so sorry, that is the worst. Hope you’re feeling better soon!
  • @dimeadozen

You’ve got a great list!  Some other fun spots are Hudson Yards, the Highline, and Central Park.  The Oculus is worth a stop when you’re at the memorial.  The Natural History Museum and the Met are amazing.  If you’re at Bryant Park, it’s fun to take a peak in the NY Public Library.  FYI- there’s not much to do in the area around the stadium in NJ besides the American Dream mall.

Pizza: For a classic NY slice, Joe’s at 7 Carmine St

But the best pizza places are actually n Brooklyn and Jersey City:

Roberta’s on Moore St in Brooklyn

Razza on Grove St in JC

    Other restaurants:

Bagels 😋 Murray’s or Russ & Daughters, but 90% of bagel shops should do it

Eataly’s downtown location is fun and easy if you’re going to the 9/11 memorial.  You can pick from several restaurants in the back of the market

Maison Kayser is near Bryant Park and a nice spot for lunch or a pastry

    My favorite NY restaurants:

Keen’s -classic NY steakhouse.  You can get a burger in the bar area if you can’t get a table

    Mary’s Fish Camp- Seafood

    Have fun!!

  • Oh no @daffodil_shoe noro while pregnant sounds like a special kind of hell. I hope you feel better soon!

@dimeadozen was just in the city last weekend, used to go in once a quarter roughly. For restaurants I would add Lil Frankie’s in the East Village, La Esquina in NoLita, Up Thai on UES. I gave a variety around the city 🙃

highly recommend you take the AC or the 23 to Brooklyn Heights at sunset and walk the promenade. Best view of the city IMO.
