January 2022 Moms

Inductions… Yes? No? Maybe?

I had my 34/35 week prenatal appointment where we scheduled an induction date for January 7th when I’ll be 39 weeks (to the day) ! I was very excited about it, until I told one of my friends who told me that she did that with her first baby and it did not go well & she highly recommends naturally inducing. Is anybody else getting induced? Has anybody been induced before? I have a couple reasons why I want to get induced, one of them being we live an hour away from the hospital I’m delivering at. What is everybody’s thoughts on this, and what are you doing?

Re: Inductions… Yes? No? Maybe?

  • I have an induction scheduled at 39 as well if I haven't gone into labor just for management of my underlying medical issue (some of my risks go up if I end up term +). But we are also going to be doing some of the more natural induction stuff leading up like getting my membranes stripped earlier that week.

  • @firewife_911 I was induced with my first due to very low amniotic fluid levels. I had a cervidil implant put in around 8pm on Wednesday night, and he was born Friday morning at 9am.
So, pretty long all in all. I had an epidural placed around 330pm on Thursday because thats when they started the syntocin drip, and I'd been told by other women who had been induced not to even bother trying to deal with pitocin contractions- just get the epidural.
This time around, I'm hoping to go into labour naturally, let the contractions build on their own, delay pain meds as long as I can and stay mobile.
I cant say that my first labour and delivery was a good or bad experience, it just is what it is, and I hope that this time it can happen naturally and maybe be different.
  • @firewife_911 I’ve had 3 successful inductions. 2 with 9+ lb babies. I was 40 weeks, 40 +2, and 41 weeks. For my first we started with pit and then they broke my water. My second they only had to break my water to get labor going. My third they broke water and gave pit. I’m sure I’ll have to be induced again this time, but I’d LOVE to go into labor naturally. I don’t want to wait until 41 weeks again though, I’ll give baby a few extra days after my due date. I obviously don’t have anything to compare it to, but I’ve heard pit contractions can be very painful and contractions after your water breaks are painful.
  • @firewife_911 My water broke spontaneously at 37+2 with my first. However, I didn't progress so they introduce Pit after 5 or 6 hours.

However, once I hit 37 weeks, I'll be doing lots of natural things to try and start labor.  But (unless medically necessary) I won't be having a membrane sweep or my water broken.

You said there are a few reasons you are being induced...are you comfortable sharing the others? I personally wouldn't use living an hour from the hospital as a reason to be induced. Again, if your doctor says if it's medically necessary, doctors know more than me (a stranger on the internet). I would just be asking exactly why they want to induce.
  • I don't plan on being induced unless I need to be for health/safety or if I'm overdue with no signs of going into labor naturally. That being said, I am very done so I'm ready when she is (even though ideally she'd cook for a few more weeks).
  • I was induced each time 37 38 and 39 weeks.induction set for 38 weeks. Dec 27. One medicated. Two without. Had to keep starting and stopping pitocin with 3 year old because contractions were not effective. With 11 month old had to have cervadil with 11 month old. Then pitocin. Epidural with 1at slept through labor til it was time to push
  • I’m assuming I will be induced at 39 weeks bc i have VCI and GD and I’m 41.  But I’m really hoping he comes early on his own.  I’m so constantly anxious that I like knowing I’ll be induced.  I have heard it can be long and painful though.
  • I was induced with my first at 39 weeks due to him being big. I went in on a Tuesday morning and delivered him by C-section 36 hours later. They had to keep stopping the Pitocin because at a certain dosage baby's heart rate would drop and then I had to lay on my side and have an oxygen mask. After 3 times of that happening the doctors finally decided a cesarean was necessary. I never progressed past like 3 cm. As of now my doctor plans to schedule C-section at 39 weeks this time unless something changes -- with my gestational diabetes.
  • I have an induction scheduled for 39 weeks. It’s partially because little one is likely to be  “big”, partially due to age (I’m 38), and partially because it makes it easier to plan to have my mom come from out of town. I’m doing the hypnobabies birth course and am really encouraged by their birth stories involving inductions— there are so many positive experiences!
  • My water broke naturally at 37w2d with my first, but I was not dilated at all and wasn’t progressing, so they gave me pitocin. I was in labor and pushing for 26 hours. It was pretty painful, and it would make a lot of sense if what they say about pitocin is true (that the contractions are way worse). Just don’t wait too long get an epidural (if you’re open to it). I’m hoping to progress naturally this time *fingers crossed*.
  • I’ve had 4 successful inductions and will be having a 5th unless she decides to come earlier. I love an hour and 45 min away from the hospital and my longest labor start to finish is 4 hours. Definitely don’t want to have a baby on the side of the road. I highly recommend an epidural, made labor a piece of cake compared to the contractions before the epidural.
  • They don’t necessarily want to induce me, they stated they offer this to all pregnant women at 39 weeks as they have seen a significantly lower risk in C-sections that way. My husband & i want to lower the risk of an emergency C-section to a little as humanly possible. The living an hour away from the hospital is a big one for me. I also want to feel like their is some sort of control over the situation lol. This is my first baby so I don’t know what to expect, so we will see!!  Maybe he will come earlier! Who knows!
  • @firewife_911 That is so interesting they see less of a need for c-sections at 39. I get wanting to avoid that and also being concerned about the drive. Definitely do whatever makes you feel best and more at ease!
  • So maternal fetal medicine told me this Friday I will be induced at 39 weeks. They say it's the best way to preserve my kidneys. I'm a little nervous. They told me it could be hours or days with the pitocin, but that my body should respond well since this isn't my first.
  • Lizzie, I wish you a quick labor. What day is 39 wks for you?
  • It would be January 19, but I guess the hospital is supposed to call me to schedule it.  I'm having mixed feelings about it.  My creatinine for my kidneys has come back excellent this entire pregnancy, so I keep asking them why they are pushing so hard for this.  The only answer I get is to preserve my kidneys.  I just don't know it's making me nervous.
  • Do not do anything you are uncomfortable with. This is your baby and your delivery.
  • What @AshleyGemini24 said. I’m so sorry you haven’t gotten a real good explanation considering your bloodwork shows nothing out of the norm. Perhaps when the hospital calls you to schedule you can kinda push it a few more days out so that you end up being closer to 40wks than 39?
  • I asked my doctor about this today. He says he thinks the ARRIVE study is very bold and feels babies should come on their own unless the baby/mom medically needs an earlier induction. He did say though that they tend to induce after 41 weeks, not the standard 42 that they used to.
