2nd Trimester

UTI's

so I am 18 weeks pregnant and this is my THIRD uti. The antibiotics I have been given say they are safe while pregnant and my doctor doesn't seem concerned but has anyone else experienced this?! Guess I'm just looking to hear I'm not the only one..

Re: UTI's

  • I have never had one- but am curious what the systems are. Whenever I hold it for more than 5 mins the sides of my abdomen hurt. Past two days I have had to go like 3-5 times in a row. Not all day but just when I drink a lot of water.

  • I know the symptoms vary but for me it's the frequent urge to go, cramping and cloudy urine. Everyone is different though! If you suspect you may have one just call your doctor, you can always go in and give a urine sample to know for sure.
  • I had one before and had to go to emergency room. They gave me iv antibiotic right away.

Yes, I had 3 UTIs when I was pregnant with my DD and the doc put me on preventative antibiotics. My UTIs are usually asymptomatic. If I feel any symptoms, the worst is mild stomach cramps. But usually I don't get symptoms, I only find out I have a UTI from routine urine tests.
  • I have a UTI again. I have been avoiding antibiotics this far. My symptoms are not that bad, just urgency, and that feeling when you do go of the muscles not wanting to contract back - like you cannot stop peeing, but you are empty. If that makes sense. If it gets worse I will take antibiotics - I just end up with a yeast infection whenever I take antibiotics.
  • I have a history of uti's Before my pregnancy . I'm 25 weeks now and had one at the beginning of my 23rd week . I didn't know I had one either . They said they're not uncommon to get while pregnant . Have you told your doc your concerns of having so many so early ? Maybe they'll explain in more dept why they aren't concerned . I know that's frustrating thou . I was upset when I found out bc I didn't have any symptoms . Good luck !
  • I've had 3 already as well. I don't feel any symptoms but they tell me when I have routine urine tests. Am on anti biannual so far it's keeping it away.

So far I haven't had a for sure UTI while pregnant. I just know my "warning" signs, where I feel like I have to constantly pee and either little comes out or little to nothing. Usually once I drink like half a bottle of water, I'm fine and go back to normal.
  • My UTI has given me fevers of up to 102! I came to the hospital, was admitted and been on an IV and antibiotics for three days now. I even got a chest X-ray to check for an infection there. Do not wait till the last minute! Go to the doctor right away. I was told that I could have died from this infection, had I ignored it.

They say my baby is safe, which was my main concern. Baby is happy :) and so are we!

P.S. IV on my right hand..wiping has never been more difficult lol
  • I take D-Mannose every day to prevent from getting another uti. It is only effective against E coli infections though, so you might as your dr to culture the bacteria. If it is anything besides E. coli, antibiotics are probably the only treatment, unfortunately. I loathe taking antibiotics because they totally mess my stomach up and make me feel terrible. Good luck mommies
  • I had a UTI around week 9 of my pregnancy and because I am allergic to the typical antibiotics given during pregnancy to treat this I was given a "sub-standard" antibiotic (Cleocin). It did not clear it up and I wound up with pyelonephritis (aka kidney infection) within 10 days. I was given another round of antibiotics (10 days of Keflex) and this cleared it up thankfully. If a pregnant person has a UTI, unless it is treated with antibiotics it's very rare it will clear up on its own. Then you risk pyelonephritis and eventually sepsis (the infection will track into your bloodstream). If you become septic from this, you literally can die and your unborn baby is obviously at risk. I worked in a hospital ER for 5 years and it was very common for women to try and treat the infection at home unsuccessfully and then eventually need to be admitted to the hospital.
It's protocol to do a culture and sensitivity (UA C&S) to identify the bacteria causing the infection and the bacteria's sensitivity to common antibiotics. That way your doctor can properly prescribe the best antibiotic.
  • why is clindamycin considered sub standard ? Many people have penicillin allergies
