@inthewoods23 OMG you have hedgehogs!!!! Totally making me rethink (and regret) these two guinea pigs I have!! They’re so cute!! Happy birthday! What are their names?

@paytonpedro Basalt is the darker one. Glacier is the more white one. Named after our Iceland honeymoon where there is plenty of basalt rock and glaciers ☺️.

A few here may still remember our first hedgehog who died about 2 years ago. His name was Pinecone 😄

We had a hedgehog a while back. They're so adorable and fun. We've been small animal free since my childhood chinchilla passed about 5 years ago at the age of 16.

@zwink1 wow is 16 very old for a chinchilla?? Maybe I'm used to hampsters and the like that generally only live 5 years or so.

I have not posted about my hedgehogs for a very long time so it's not your memory that's bad lol.

@acleverusername I think sometime this month was the 2 year anniversary of that post haha. Now I need to go search for it for a laugh.

@fantasyflyte lol. of course it will soon be tied to your amazon prime account so they can send you period products pre-emptively (that will turn up a month early or a week late, depending on how badly they screw up their prediction).

@fantasyflyte curious if that was Oura ring. I got an email update from them saying they now have period prediction. Wondering if they messed up their messaging in some places.

@fantasyflyte I’m pretty sure that the device would break with me and my insanely unpredictable cycles. Good luck figuring out if I’m having a 40 day cycle or a 75+ day cycle 😂

@inthewoods23, okay good, because I never know when I'm suffering from premature short term memory loss, lol! Chinchillas tend to be much longer lived than most of their small mammal counterparts, so 16 is up there but isn't crazy old. Toward the end she had developed a growth on her throat/chest, so we knew she was sick but we didn't biopsy it or anything to find out what it was given her age. I think most sources would say 10-15 years is average, but there have been some instances of them living for 20+ years (I want to say the record is 29).

@zwink1 ah okay, cool! I love how record ages are well beyond the average. Pretty sure hedgehogs live on average 6 years or so. I think the record is 15+? Crazy. The breeder we got these 2 from said one of the babies she sold lived for 11 or 13 years.

Q for you all - did any of you get the HPV vaccine? I think that first came out right around the time I was a pre-teen or early teenager and I remember it always said to get it before sexual activity is best (well past that point now haha). When I went to my OB and had my pap done she discussed it with me because I guess it's now approved for women 27-40? It used to be only up to age 26. Curious if anyone got it in later years and how that went (as in how did you feel).

@inthewoods23 I didn’t get it as a teen because my mom was scared of it causing possible infertility (ironic that I have that issue anyway 🙄). I’d definitely be open to getting it as an adult though.

@inthewoods23 when it was first being offered i was considered "too old" to receive it even though i tested negative for HPV at the time and could have benefited. more recently i've had my ob/gyn offer it, but on two separate occasions there have been hiccups with my insurance and it never wound up happening. Anyway, somewhere along the way I wound up encountering a high risk strain of HPV which means I am now stuck getting annual pap smears that seem to always require follow up with a cervical biopsy. the biopsies always come back fine but as you can well imagine, cervical biopsies are kinda horror shows. ANYWAY, i am still pretty mad about the fact that they wouldn't give me the HPV vaccine back when I was a pure young innocent, and that i was too lazy subsequently to force my insurance company to ok it.

@inthewoods23 i was in college when it came out. i did 2/3 of the series because i believe the 3rd would've been when i was off at college and clearly taking a shot that wasn't booze was not a priority. so truthfully i have no idea what level of immunity i have, my obgyn has never brought it up.

@optimistgardener yeah I think in the very beginning the recommended age was like 12-16 or so? I don't truly remember nor does it really matter at this point. Sorry to hear you have to do yearly pap smears! I was every other year for the longest time I think but she told me since I've had so many normal paps it can be as long as 5 years but that might have only been if I also opt to get the vaccine? My memory is terrible.

I'm interested at this point since it was brought up and they did check for HPV and that just came back negative today. I just don't know if now is really the best time to start it with possibly starting an immune protocol soon. I think it's going to have to be once I have a kid.

@anniemarie887 you are probably fine having 2 of the 3. My OB said the recommendation was a 1 month spacing between doses 1 and 2, and then 6 months later is dose 3. But she said you could even do dose 3 much further out from that and be fine.

@inthewoods23 I think I was 16 when it was starting to be recommended and idk if I was ever asked or slipped through the crack but I never got it. I feel like by 27-40, hats the point? Also if you’re already married (and ttc) I feel like too late anyways? What did you ob say about it? Like was she recommending that you get it?

@paytonpedro yes she was recommending it. I can't entirely remember all the "this is how you could end up with HPV". It's not always sexually transmitted. At this point it's mostly for preventing cervical cancers caused by some of the HPV strains.

Jumping in on this HPV vaccine chat because I am oooooold and was definitely never offered it ever. How interesting! I certainly would have gotten it if it existed when I was younger and would now but I'm too old

I just looked it up and in the UK (where I live) it's offered to all 12 to 13 year old girls and boys, and it's a two dose course. They have us get paps every three years and they only check the cells if we test positive for HPV (that is, they check for HPV and if it's positive then they check the cells).

@inthewoods23 I just googled it quickly and wound up on a .org possibly from New Zealand, not sure. I didn’t realize it could be transmitted non-sexually. From what I read you’d have to be rubbing sores with someone who had it.

I vaguely remember getting it as a pre-teen/young teen. I remember it was pretty much brand new, and my age group was among the first to get it because we were thr original target age range when it came out.

@inthewoods23 jumping on the HPV vaccine chat here. I remember getting it when I was around 13 or so and it was brand spankin' new when I got it. I remember a 3 shot series (maybe it was 2) and they hurt like a bitch. Like all other vaccines, it only protects against certain strains. I ended up getting HPV (I think is what my old OB told me) when I was 22 ish. I have a coloscopy and a LEEP procedure done to remove the pre-cancerous cells when I was 22. All is good now and no signs of HPV.

haha @Paturkey and @optimistgardener i think i'm right there w/you ladies... but i do remember being offered it and being like sure. when i was really little my mom's uncle was still a practicing ped and i got the chickenpox vaccine when it wasn't fully approved yet, so i guess we've always been progressive-ish about them in my fam now that i think about it.

back to the pap convo - my OBGYN stopped doing them annually somewhere around 3-5 years ago, she always offers if there is something i have a concern, and we talked about how i have no familial history of cancer, being in a monogamous relationship - basically that it's not needed annually.
