Does anyone have experience taking vaginal progesterone mid-way through a pregnancy? My first was born at 35w6d, so a late term premie. They offered Makenna shots, but I declined. So they have been doing weekly cervix checks on me from 18weeks. I am at 28mm and they said my cervix is short, but typically they treat under 25mm. Given history alone I could treat now or continue to monitor through 23w which would be the best time to start the progesterone or do a cerclage if it dips further. For me, I have a history of recurrent yeast infections and have also had BV so the cream gives me pause in case there were side effects or irritation. They said once you start you need to go until term. That if you stop early it could trigger early labor.
Re: Vaginal Progesterone
I’ve never been on vaginal progesterone, but my cervix is being monitored and checked by MFM due to PPROM in my first pregnancy at 19 weeks.
They did Makena shots starting around 20 weeks with DS, but after a couple treatments my arms broke out in a horribly itchy rash and soon after there was a recall on Makena anyway. I also had experienced mild contractions after each shot, which scared me tbh.
They offered me vaginal progesterone, but I declined and made it to 38 weeks and 4 days before delivery, but my cervix also didn’t show any signs of shortening really prior to that.
They offered vaginal progesterone again this time around, but I declined and they said “Actually, the literature does show it’s not necessarily as effective as we once thought.”
I’m personally hesitant to put anything up there I don’t have to due to the risk of introducing bacteria… but that’s just me.
In the end it’s totally your decision and I wish you all the best.
This time I was on from the start, until 16 weeks. As I was weaning I had to go back on for a few days, but I've been successfully off for about 3 weeks
