Breast pump

May or may not have gotten a little too excited that I got a hands free Breast pump for free through my insurances. I wanted the willow, but got the Freemie. Have y'all decided on which if any you will be getting.

Re: Breast pump

  • I don't think I am eligible to get it until week 28, but will probably do the Spectra 2. I think it's $35 with my insurance (the Spectra 1 is free).

  • Can I ask a stupid question?  How do you get it through insurance?  Do I call to make sure it’s covered and then order it?
  • @karenmarie9 I looked on my insurance’s website (Cigna) under coverage and breast pumps were listed. It took me to a list of eligible websites to order from.
  • I went with Medela.
  • @AshleyGemini24 hands free sounds so great, especially if you want to be able to move around and multitask while pumping!

I went with the Ameda Mya. It just arrived last night. It’s teeny tiny and very quiet. Has a rechargeable, 2-hr lifespan battery. My sister gave me her used medela and some other one I can’t remember right now. I only plan to use them as a backup. I know you shouldn’t reuse someone else’s, so I don’t intend to unless I’m stuck without the one I ordered for some reason.
  • I bought the Medela Freestyle Flex. It's a double electric, hands free pump. I need to get the hands free bra still.
  • @sarah_is_pregnant, I've never used the hands free but from what I've seen in reviews and such you just use a nursing bra with the hands free pumps.
  • I used the Spectra S1 last time but did not have to pump for long since Covid hit and my job went virtual.  I used the website Aeroflow to get that pump; the website basically took my insurance information and gave me my options.  It was nice bc they then sent replacement flange/valves/tubes at whatever interval my insurance covered if I responded to say I needed them.  I did not know those would be covered so that was nice!
  • Freemie is also a great breast pump brand too, while Willow might have been your first choice, there are some advantages to Freemie to consider:

    • Cost: Since you got it through insurance, you likely saved a significant amount compared to the Willow.
    • Versatility: Freemie cups work with many standard pump motors, giving you more flexibility if you need a stronger pump later.
    • Discreetness: While not shaped like a breast, the Freemie can be tucked under clothing with a supportive bra.

Here's my comparison to help you decide if Freemie might be a good fit:

    Willow vs Freemie

    • Size: Similar size, but Willow is shaped like a breast for discretion.
    • Noise: Both are fairly quiet.
    • Suction: Both offer adjustable suction.
    • App: Willow has an app for tracking sessions, Freemie doesn't.
    • Portability: Both are wearable and hands-free.
    • Parts: Freemie requires more parts to clean than Willow's disposable collection bags (optional with Willow).

Ultimately, the best pump depends on your needs and preferences. You might find Freemie works great, especially considering you got it for free! There are also many resources online with reviews and comparisons of both pumps. You can order one free breast pump through insurance.
