Yep. Started this for very selfish reasons! I feel like having 2 girls is leaving me woefully underprepared for having a boy. I would LOVE to hear from experienced boy moms, what do I need to know? What do you wish someone had told you or what tips and tricks have you learned along the way that are boy specific? Any and all advice welcome!!!
DS is 6 and so far, raising my boy has been very much like raising my girl... I expect that he'll need deodorant later than she did, but that's probably 5-6 years away.
Something valuable I was told early on- if you decide to circumsize, you'll want little sterile packs of KY Jelly to squirt on the tip of his penis after every diaper change to keep the inside of the diaper from rubbing and causing irritation.
Boys can pee all over the during a diaper change, I was lucky enough to never experience this though. A trick that was shared with me was to open the dirty diaper, give a quick blow of cool air and recover with the diaper... the cool air is supposed to inspire them to pee into the diaper before you take it all the way off and prevent them from peeing all over the wall behind you.
@Panaceia my son was one of the open air pee-ers. I think he did at every single diaper change for the first couple months of his life. It was crazy. Pee used to go everywhere at first before I figured out how to handle it. He would literally spray down the room. He peed on me many times. He peed on himself many times. One time he peed INTO HIS OWN OPEN MOUTH. Kids are so gross.
What worked for us once I discovered it was breast pads. The fold in them was the perfect size to make them stay on his little penis, and they absorbed the pee well.
But I hope your son isn’t one of the pee-ers. Most of them aren’t.
@Panaceia Before taking off the diaper, I'd wipe a cool wipe just above the diaper line/below the belly button, and then wait a few seconds for the pee to empty haha. I never got firehosed. 😁
Also, ALWAYS make sure the penis is pointing down. sometimes those things like to have a mind of their own. It's a mess when they are pointing up, or stuck out the leg hole of the diaper 😅
@Panaceia I’ve never had a daughter, but in my babysitting days I changed some very nasty diapers on infant girls, and that was grosser clean up than I ever had to do on my son. Just fewer folds (maybe it depends on the shape and size of the scrotum?). For me the main problem with wiping the scrotum wasn’t the mess but the sensitivity. He would scream every time I touched him there with a wipe
@jessier19 That is soooo good to know! My girls are not fans of getting the poop wiped off of anything other than their bums...so hopefully I'll be somewhat prepared for the sensitivity!
I'm laughing at the open air peeing because while they thankfully are incapable of peeing all over themselves, both my girls would pee the second that diaper came off. DD1 once shat on my mom's face as a newborn. I warned her and my sister warned her, she will pee the second her diaper is off. My mom was all tut tut I'm Gma, I got this. Then opened the diaper went eek when babe started peeing and flinched back while still holding DD1s legs up and BAM newborn poo shoot to the cheek. It was HILARIOUS. 🤷🏻♀️ I warned ya. Another of my favorite memories of my sister was she went to change DD1 as a newborn while I pumped, this was before DD1 christened my mom, so I gave her the warning. Then all I hear from the living room is "oh no, baby, please no, ahh stop peeing baby" they both returned in new outfits 🤣🤣

@lurvleybunchococonuts When my niece was born I took her to her first doctor's appointment when she was one day old (in SIL's culture they don't leave the house for 100 days after having a baby, so I took her:). The second the diaper came off for her check up she peed all over the doctor 🤣
ooohhhh, thought of another one! People really really love to see pictures of the baby in clothes they gave you, if you can remember (or wrote down) who gave you little outfits, shoot them a quick picture of the baby wearing it.
Also, everyone loves to buy cutesie baby clothes as gifts. Moms give diapers and wipes, grandparents and people without kids give outfits. (I've already informed MH to direct his mother to only 6mos+ because I expect a hoss of a baby)
@jlbaker08 Ha ha another TTM and I'm the exact opposite. I HATE sleepers with zippers. I only buy the snaps ones. I gave away all the ones I was gifted with DD1 and have never bought any since. Seriously can't stand them 🤣
At least for our son. He went through roughly 20 diapers/day for the first 3 months, and snaps made it easy to check if he was wet. Regular zippers meant we had to expose his whole chest and tummy, which he hated (and pulling the zipper down meant we needed 2 hands).
2 way zippers are the way to go though! Convienence of zippers, with the benefits snaps give of not having to entirely undress baby!
+1 on the 2-way zippers! I’d also say I like the onesies/sleepers that only have snaps at the crotch/legs (so you put them on over the head). Those worked better for us than the ones with snaps down the chest.
also, I tried the new magnetic ones and those were a joke. Annoying to get the magnets to line up and not as secure as snaps.
@goldfishcraker I do have 1 sleeper with the zipper that goes the opposite way (so I can open from the toe) and I did keep that one;)
@rachelredhead Yes to snaps only at the crotch! I am going to look for some of those this time around. I actually started using ones with no snaps or zippers with DD2 and despite the obvious downfalls of having to undress her fully to change the diaper, I actually LOVED them. I would get the rompers with the tank top style sleeves and just put a long sleeve under it so I could pull the *pants* part off for diaper changes without having to expose her belly...but I think I'm going to look for the crotch snaps this time around!
+1 for two way zippers or top to bottom zippered sleepers. I also love the sleeper gowns you can tie at the bottom for NB stage.

Also, his scrotum will likely be huge, swollen, and possibly purple when he's born. It'll resolve in a few days
@goldfishcraker I was looking forward to poop maybe being easier to clean than with girls but looks like that might just be a pipe dream....😅
