Re: Product Spotlight: Travel Systems

  • We use the BABYZEN yoyo 6+ ($$$) which is compatible with the maxi cosi pebble car seat (which we got FOC second hand) but we never actually got to put the car seat onto the stroller because baby wakes up the moment we park the car. Not sure if #2 will be like #1 in this aspect. We also preferred baby carrying when #1 was small. Now that #2 is coming, I'm wondering if a double buggy is a necessary investment because I read somewhere that kids should be in strollers up to 3 yo, and it looks like we can make do with a single stroller and baby wearing until #1 hits that 3 yo milestone. Hope to hear what people are doing. Recently we have taken out the maxi cosi pebble and installed the maxi cosi pria which is front facing. #1 loves it because he can see everything now.

  • I don't have any fantastic brand recommendations or anything, but some advice I wish I'd gotten with my first... get a travel system with a jogging stroller.  Even if you don't jog, the suspension and wheels are much better and handle "off-roading" (walking through grass, sand, mulch, etc) much better than the standard stroller wheels.

  • I had the Baby Trend system (with running stroller) for DD1. I HATED the car seat. It was uncomfortable and she outgrew it soooo fast. The stroller was ok, but I didn't love it and she hated it until she was a bit older. She preferred baby wearing. Plus once she started teething she would bite on the tray at the front which really hurt her:/

With DD2 I treated myself and got the PegPerrego I think it was the Book Cross (so 3 big wheels like a running stroller). I LOVE it! I got the bassinet attachment (it has a stand too) that we used when DD2 was itty bitty and we used in the house ALLL the time and the infant car seat is so easy to attach and remove because the stroller is just a chassis that you can attach different seats to. I could easily fold and unfold and take it in and out of the trunk with one hand while carrying DD2 and because you don't need a seat on it while using the infant car seat, it didn't take up much room in the trunk. And I love that you can use the seat that comes with it from birth if you want, it fully reclines and has a really big sun shade and I love that you have the option of facing the seats in different directions. Even my almost 6 year old could still fit in the seat it came with, once I stopped using the car seat, if DD2 wanted to be carried and DD1 got tired of walking. It is very $$$ but it was my splurge item and I LOVE it. I'm so glad I'll hopefully be getting the chance to use it again!!!
  • @bananasb I got a double chariot when DD2 was 1 year old because we go on lots of long walks and DD1 (despite being almost 8 now) still gets tired after a while, so we wanted something an 8 year old could still fit in with a 2 year old and we use it daily. I plan on wearing this little one as much as possible, at least for the first year or so, so DD1 can still sit if she gets tired. Initially I just bought a strollerboard that attaches to our single stroller for when DD2 was little and if DD1 got tired but it didn't work that well for us since DD1 is so tall. You definitely don't need a double stroller though! But just keep in mind that #2 might not like any wearing (which was our experience...DD1 LOVED being in the carrier, but DD2 was not as much of a fan...)
  • I second what @jlbaker08 suggests.
I got the bravo travel system with my chicco keyfit 30 and while it was useful for stores and occasional walks around the block. Its so bumpy even going down the sidewalk so when DS was trying to sleep he'd almost startle at every crack or small bump we went over.
I then bought a used BOB stroller and its heaven (even for being 5+years old, they really hold their value) I'm trying to decide if I'm going to use the bravo system again, or buy the carseat adapter for my BOB (knowing that I'll probably be selling it and purchasing a used double BOB at some point) I'm sure it'll be a good long while before DS can walk any distance, so my initial plan is mainly baby wear this kiddo and push the other in a stroller. Also I'm not a runner (bad knees) but will always use the BOB over the other two strollers we have when its appropriate(its large is the downside).
So in the beginning I loved the bravo system, folds up quick and easy and loved the easy snap in place for the carseat(other than cheap plastic wheels and the useless cup holder, but a big basket underneath was helpful). And frankly I'm not a super fancy person and dont need anything expensive so it worked perfectly, and I'm a huge fan for buying used!
  • We have the Uppababy Vista ($$$) and used the Chicco KeyFit30. Love the car seat and the stroller, but man oh man is the Uppababy a beast! Rides great on rough, city sidewalks, has a very large storage basket, great shade, and nice recline. It's just SO HEAVY and large. We use our Zoe stroller ($$) more often since it's lightweight and more compact.

Deciding if I want a side to side double stroller this time around, rather than tandem. I feel kids want to see everything instead of having an obstructed view!
  • Does anyone here have experience with the Cybex Gazelle? It's very similar to the Uppababy Vista, but more easily adjustable, more storage space, more compact when folded, and a tad more affordable. I'm leaning toward buying that and getting the adaptor to make it work with my Chicco Keyfit 30. But it's still so new that there aren't a lot of independent reviews out yet, so I'm hoping that by the time baby is born there will be more of those for me to lean on when I make my decision.

Last time around we had the Chicco Keyfit 30 (which I loved, nothing bad to say about it), and a Bravo stroller (which was fine, but it developed wear and tear faster than I'd have liked). This time around I think we will need a double stroller, because even though my son is two and a half we still use it a lot with him.
  • @jessier19 DD1 is almost 8 and DD2 27 months and they both still ride in our double chariot for long walks. I would never be able to get out for decent walks if we didn't have the double chariot!
