1st Trimester

Spotting

Hi,

I am 8 weeks 5 days pregnant. I started spotting 3 days ago. At first it was red, now it is brown and stringy.  I am freaking out. It is not enough to soak a pad, but I have been wearing one to track how much - just light spotting throughout the day and while wiping.  My first OBGYN apt isn’t until Thursday.  Any advice or wisdom mamas?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Spotting

  • I would call your OB and let them know about your spotting. Rule of thumb is as long as you’re not soaking a pad. That’s what my OB told me when I had bleeding early on at 6 weeks. For me it turned out to be a subchorionic hematoma, which has thankfully since dissolved. I am currently 12 weeks. Good luck to you.

  • @aaaleexa Usually brown is more dried/old blood.  So perhaps you could've been bleeding and now it's petered out and you're getting the remnants.  As for me, every time I spotted I lost my PGs (I have recurrent PG loss, and have had 5 MC with no living children).  But I always started spotting, then started bleeding more (red period blood), and started cramping.  Mine never went brown afterwards.  But as @blessedmama2004 said, I would definitely call your OB and let them know.  However, just realize that there's nothing that can be done if you are headed for MC.  At this point you either are or aren't (and I totally get wanting to know), but you can't change the outcome if that's the direction you would be headed.  Hopefully that is not the case though, and it's just a small bleed, which can be totally common in early PG!  GOod luck!

October 2015 - 1st MC.  7-8 weeks along. Suspected molar PG, but luckily just a MMC.

    June 2016 - 2nd MC: 4-5 weeks CP

    September 2016 - 3rd MC: 4-5 weeks CP

RE 1: ALL the testing - 'unexplained'  "Yinz can do IVF or try on your own"

    Feb 2017 - 4th MC: 6 weeks

RE 2: More tests. Still 'unexplained.'  Called fat for an entire hour-long appointment, cried a lot

    Feb 2019 - 5th MC: 6-7 weeks

    IUD - March 2019-March 2023

RE 3:  Repeat all the tests. Hoping to try IVF.

  • Thank you for your reply. I am so so sorry to hear about your difficulties, I can not even imagine what you’ve walked through.  You’re in my thoughts and prayers 🤍
  • @blessedmama2004 thank you for your advice!  Happy to hear yours resolved. Maybe I’ll see if I can move my appointment up…
  • @aaaleexa I’m currently in my fourth pregnancy (almost 11w). I’ve had 2 MC, one live birth, and now this pregnancy. I’ve had spotting in all pregnancies. I know that’s not particularly helpful but wanted to share just to affirm that aside from contacting your OB, there’s nothing to be done at this point. Spotting often occurs in successful pregnancies AND it’s often the beginning of heartbreak. I know that waiting is awful. It helps me to remind myself, “today, I am pregnant” and to just do my best to be present in today’s experience, and not spiral into worry about the future. Stay in touch with your doctor, take deep breaths, and try to find some distractions as you wait.
  • I had spotting similar to this with both pregnancies. My first pregnancy resulted in MC, but I knew immediately that’s what it was. It did turn brown, but then a week later I had period blood and cramps followed by a MC. My second pregnancy I spotted a day after having intercourse, and it turned brown. I never had it again and now I have a beautiful 17 month old boy. Your body is changing very quickly, and if you have a sensitive cervix like I do, you may have spotting because you exercised or had intercourse. I agree with PP’s that you need to let your OB know. They will probably just check you when you go in this week. Let’s hope it’s nothing and you’re fine! Fingers crossed!
