1st Trimester

HCG levels low to begin with

My HCG was 18 on Thursday. It was retested Monday about 92 hours later and it was 48. Apparently this is considered a 63 percent increase. Doctor says this is less than my first pregnancy so they want to retest a third time. Are these levels concerning?

Re: HCG levels low to begin with

  • Hopefully the next results are more reassuring! In my lay opinion, the numbers you got don’t seem too far off from where they would theoretically be if they were doubling. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Good luck.

  • @patel1988 I'd wait and see what the 3rd number is.  It definitely should be doubling every 48 hours (and hopefully your 3rd test will be 48 hours later and not twice that amount).  However, slow rising HCG can be a thing and sometimes works out fine.  It also depends on how far along you are.  If you'd just found out you were PG and are 4-5 weeks, these numbers could be totally fine and may pick up.  If you're further along than that (say 6+ weeks), then I'd definitely say it's more concerning.

Hopefully your 3rd number will jump up and double and everything will work out!  Sorry, HCG beta confusion is stressful!

October 2015 - 1st MC.  7-8 weeks along. Suspected molar PG, but luckily just a MMC.

    June 2016 - 2nd MC: 4-5 weeks CP

    September 2016 - 3rd MC: 4-5 weeks CP

RE 1: ALL the testing - 'unexplained'  "Yinz can do IVF or try on your own"

    Feb 2017 - 4th MC: 6 weeks

RE 2: More tests. Still 'unexplained.'  Called fat for an entire hour-long appointment, cried a lot

    Feb 2019 - 5th MC: 6-7 weeks

    IUD - March 2019-March 2023

RE 3:  Repeat all the tests. Hoping to try IVF.

  • Thanks so much everyone.
The first test was done 12 dpo
The second test was done 15 dpo
So definitely quite early (3-4 weeks)

My next test is tomorrow. Fingers crossed it rises

May I ask, out of curiosity, why are you having blood draws so early? 12 days past ovulation some women are just getting positives.  Were you temping? IVF? How do you know your exact ovulation, as that can even be off, hence lower numbers.  Best wishes to you.
  • Yes. I had IUI done
  • Today's levels are 146 after 72 hours. This is a 108% increase in 48 hours when put into the calculator. Haven't heard anything from the doctor yet but got the numbers from my lab Corp account
