Oh, and is anyone starting to look at baby stuff yet? Is it time to start our product spotlight threads? If we start soon, what product should we start with? Car seats, strollers…?
I'm having lunch today with a colleague. Aside from that, not much going on at all. In terms of baby stuff, I purchased a few zippered sleepers for 3m babies last weekend when we were at Costco, and bought the Medela Freestyle Flex double pump. Best Buy had it $100 off, so crazy not to. Aside from that, I'll go through the baby stuff we already have and organize it to see if there's anything else we will need (which is unlikely since you always over purchase for a first baby). One good thing about getting the NIPT is finding out the sex of the baby earlier than expected.
We’re in Reno visiting with my in-laws, and it’s been fun! My niece is 3 and my kids are 4 and 2 and they’ve all been getting along great. The sad part is there’s a fire nearby (welcome to fire season I guess) and while yesterday’s air quality was tolerable, this morning is pretty bad, so I think we’ll all have to spend most of the day inside.
Also, I’m super bloated. Like, early 1st trimester bloated. So uncomfortable. I’m walking around like I’m 35 weeks or something.
My uncle made a brunch for our immediate family since we haven’t gotten together since Covid - we celebrated a lot of milestones we missed last year. My aunt’s 70th, my 30th, my MIL’s retirement, and of course, Baby Girl.
My mom bought me some baby toys that I’ve put in the closet and I’m starting to look at travel systems, bassinets and furniture. I don’t think I will start a registry/buying in earnest until after my anatomy scan at the end of August.
I just got home from MN yesterday, thank goodness. We had fun, but it feels SO good to be home. We had my niece's 1st birthday party today and then I spent the afternoon cleaning and organizing. We have about 3 bags of girls clothes to go through that friends and family have given me. I've been having a lot more round ligament pain the last couple days, so that's been fun...
We have all of the major things in the baby's room done except for the crib (the pieces are there, it just needs to be put together.) Other than that, I'm not really looking at baby stuff. We'll wait until we're qualified to close out our registry. My SIL offered to throw a sprinkle, so that was nice. I'm a little bummed no one in MN offered or mentioned it at all. I think I'll do a sip and see in the spring or summer though.
Re: pump. Im not sure, and just wasn't willing to wait and see. I will ask the OB for a back-dated req, and hope that the pump I got is one that insurance will cover, if they do at all.
The air quality is SO BAD in Reno/Tahoe that we may have to cancel our outdoor dinner plans for tonight and our beach trip for tomorrow. I’m so bummed. Sometimes I hate living out here, and I definitely dislike summer now because of fire season.
@sarah_is_pregnant a sip and see is a celebration after the baby is born where guests sip on a beverage and get to see the new baby.
I hope your insurance covers it too! I know mine only covers ones ordered through DME (durable medical equipment). The hospital I delivered at let me get mine through their gift shop and they processed everything with my insurance for me.
Sounds like everyone had a fun weekend! We took the dog to the beach on Saturday and then had friends over for a BBQ today. Very relaxed and fun!
I also announced my pregnancy on social media (it’s world IVF day today apparently!) so not gonna lie I enjoyed checking the comments and messages all day. It’s good to feel loved and it’s been a long journey to get here.
In terms of baby gear- I’ve bought nothing except for two outfits so far. I’m overwhelmed and don’t want to buy too much. I think the stroller is the most intimidating for me. Also is any doing nurses or help? My friend messaged me after my announcement telling me I needed to start looking for postpartum and night nurses now if I want a good one? What??? I didn’t even think about it. Eek!
My husband suggested a night nurse. I think I might’ve done that if I was having twins, but unless I’m pumping exclusively so the nurse can feed the baby at night, I don’t see how that could work for us.
I honestly have never heard of anyone doing night nurses, unless they're a celebrity or super rich. I wasn't even sure at first what you meant - I thought your were talking about at the hospital and I was going to say that you get who you get, lol!
No, we are not planning on hiring a night nurses. I'm guessing my parents/MIL will help the first week or so when we get home - just mostly with entertaining the 6 year old so I can focus on the baby and sleep. Depending on when baby is born, he'll be at school most of the day though.
My MIL mentioned maybe getting us one to help in the early stages, but is it naïve of me to want to "rough it" with the baby? My in-laws also live legit 5 minutes from us, so I know they will be helping, as will my parents, who are about 40 minutes away.
I guess my UO may be that I don't understand the point of a night nurse, but maybe because I plan on breastfeeding like I did with my son. Even if I had help overnight, I'd still have to get up for feedings. 🤷🏻♀️ I could see though how if you're planning to bottle feed, it could come in handy...but I figure that's what my husband's for 😂
@fifilala516 - that’s where I am at. I kind of want to rough it as well. Like I’m sure it’s also naive of me; but a part of me is like “how hard can it be?”.
@magalina_h - I’m not sure I see the point either. And also my friend that recommended it doesn’t work (but she does have a toddler and a newborn) so a part of me is so curious why she needs a night nurse and full time day help. But I didn’t want to seem judgmental and ask why she actually needed one (but I def thought it!)
I had issues nursing with DS so I’m going straight to formula with this one so I’ll be able to have help with feeding. That said, I’m not interested in a night nurse. DH and I will have it covered plus my mom will stay with us as long as we need.
We haven’t bought anything yet. DS is 8 so all baby gear is long gone and we’ll have to buy everything. We’ll get the NIPT results back next week and after that I think I’ll be more comfortable buying things. All measurements looked good at the 13 week US.
I know several woman who have utilized night nurses ! Essentially, they feed the baby if they are bottle fed, bring you the baby for breastfeeding, keep the baby if they don’t settle so the mother can go back to sleep, change the baby, do cleaning/laundry etc while the baby sleeps and whatever else the mother might need. Honestly they are super helpful.
@karenmarie9 not to be dramatic but the sleep deprivation in the first 3-4 weeks is absolute torture and will test both your physical and mental limits. I promise, as a first time mom - I thought I would be fine and i was SOOO wrong. As a second time mom I am absolutely dreading it and I’ve already started lining up people to do cooking, cleaning and caregiving of my other child! I may utilize a night nurse - im not joking! It’s worth it to sleep. If i can get at least 4 hours i can at least be together enough to mother my other child !
@relizabethp I have the C-shaped one, and I use the top of the C for my pillow, I hug the long part, and then tuck the bottom part of the C between my legs.
