Infertility

Acupuncture for IVF?

I just had to cancel/postpone an egg retrieval because my follicle weren’t reacting well enough to my meds (TBH I was overly stressed and I think that had a lot to do with it). I struggle to just chill out. I breathe, I exercise, I do yoga, read, etc. I am just naturally a stressed out person. To avoid having a repeat as this is my second and final round of IVF I want to try anything I haven’t tried yet including acupuncture. It is expensive though. Some of the acupuncture websites suggest multiple sessions a week, that is out of the question for me. Has anyone else used acupuncture? Did you feel like it helped? How often did you go?

  • @LHinkle1990 I’m so sorry about the set backs to your ER, I know the feeling and it really sucks. It is good that you are open to try new things to reach your goal. I’ve also tried my first acupuncture 5 months before my very first pregnancy *TW* but unfortunately I had an MC at 6weeks *end TW*. For me, I feel that acupuncture had helped to get that bfp. So now, I’m going to regularly do it. My therapist told me to have a treatment once before egg transfer and another one after it. For egg retrieval 3 sessions is her advice for me.

  • I did acupuncture about two months prior to transfer. I had a cyst, and I think acupuncture helped it make it go away. My first transfer failed, but my second was successful! Currently 6 weeks. I mainly went twice a week and then three sessions after transfer. I also got a thick lining! Acupuncture helps with blood flow and relaxes you. It was my midday treat to take a nap and just feel rested!

I did acupuncture just before we tried our first IUI. I think I was going twice / week (my husband has amazing insurance and I only had to pay a co-pay for each visit). Although it was incredibly relaxing, both IUIs failed 😕 We then took a 8 month break from fertility treatments before moving on to IVF. I have a friend that did acupuncture and swears it helped her get her BFP along with IVF. But I feel just as relaxed with some headphones, listening to ASMR or guided meditation channels on YouTube, as I did with acupuncture (and YouTube is free). I also totally get wanting to try anything and everything (I know I did). Best of luck to you! I hope whatever route you go leads you to your BFP 🙂
  • Hi there! I have been doing acupuncture for over a year now. We only started the ivf process this January and I’m 17 weeks pregnant now. Acupuncture helped me conceive naturally twice last year but both unfortunately ended in miscarriages. With our IVF process we had our embryos PGS tested and had our best embryo transferred. On the day of transfer I did a session before the transfer and one session after the transfer as my acupuncturist was able to come home and do it at home. She said that day of transfer acupuncture has a 30% higher rate of implantation- I haven’t cross checked this information. So far things have gone well and I will continue to do weekly sessions until week 20. I know many get discharged much earlier but because my pregnancy is considered high risk I’m staying in to have the support a little longer.
My acupuncturist has also helped with prescribing herbs for regular cycles, cysts and egg quality - all of this pre IVF of course. Additionally they can adjust points to help with stuff like morning sickness etc. in the first trimester.
I have a friend who has endometriosis  who benefited from TCM herbs, acupuncture and Mercier massage supplementing her IVF protocol.

They say that the more frequently  you do acupuncture  the more you get out of it, but I only did it once a week and sometimes once every two weeks. I increased to two sessions a week just  before my retrieval and soon after implantation. The financial toll is significant however if you live in the US this is tax deductible. This doesn’t always do much but it’s better than nothing. Hope this helps and sending you my best for the IVF process!
