For those intending to try nursing, I cannot recommend the Haakaa enough!!!! I was able to save sooooo much milk without even breaking out a pump. If you plan to nurse, you need this product!
There are more deals on Haakaa products that are active now.
@galentine and others who breastfed previously... Do I need an electric pump, or would one of those do the job? I am interested in combo feeding from the beginning. I don't plan on pumping once I go back to work, nor am I interested in pumping to build a freezer stash. My only concern is, do I need an electric pump to build/maintain supply while I'm "off duty" for feedings, or is that not a concern? Looks like you just plop it on the other boob while baby eats?
@noprobalo you’ll want an electric pump if you are going back to work so you can pump on a similar schedule to when baby nurses on days off. However, check with your insurance. Most in the US cover breast pumps 100% when your OB writes a prescription for one. The Haakaa is great for catching the extra stuff, especially in the beginning or if you have an oversupply. I was constantly letting down in the “wrong” breast while nursing DD and my breast pads caught a lot of liquid gold I could have collected in a haakaa.

@chindimples04 I'm not planning to pump at work, so BFing would be about a 4-month endeavor, tops. If I can avoid all the insurance hoopla, that would make me very happy. 😄
@noprobalo, it really depends on your individual situation. A haakaa won't replace an electric pump, it's really for a different use than a pump. But if you aren't planning to pump at all when you go back to work and you'll only need a little bit for random times you are away from baby, the haakaa could be enough. You'd just have to gauge how well you respond to the haakaa and how much milk you'll need stashed. I used it almost every single feeding in the early days and was able to collect between 1 and 6 or 7 ounces per feeding. That would have easily been enough for me to leave a bottle with a caregiver if I needed to be away from the baby for a couple hours. But your needs could be different.
My suggestion would be to still get an electric pump to have on hand just in case (especially if insurance will cover it for you -- mine was completely free!). They also make manual pumps which would likely be somewhere in the middle of the haakaa and electric pump in terms of output.
The reason I really like the haakaa is that it's basically zero effort! Any amount of milk saved with zero effort is big in my opinion.
@noprobalo there are so many services that deal with insurance for you. Usually getting the (free) pump isn't a hassle at all. Personally I'd get one even if you don't plan to pump at work just because you never know what those early days will bring. I always needed to pump in addition to nursing to help get my milk to come in.
@noprobalo if you're not BFing at work, you could always just get a better manual pump to pump if you're not on feeding duty. Though it would take longer and wouldn't be hands free, so would be a preference. I totally hear you on not wanting to go through insurance, but if you want somewhat be able multitask during off duty feedings most breast pump places that work through insurance have the Medela as completely free so seconding @chindimples04 's recommendation.
Thanks, all. I got one of the Haakaas; it was $10 after discounts so why not. But I'll keep trying to investigate how to get insurance to pay for a pump.
Now I also bought the owlet monitor and sock... guess I have 30 days to decide! I already have the owlet 2 from my son but it's 4 years old so maybe a new one is in order??
