UO Thursday 6/17

What's your unpopular opinion?

Re: UO Thursday 6/17

  • Okay so I finally thought of 3 this week (all based on watching vlogs about what to buy/pack for baby and the hospital stay):

    1. I like dressing newborns/babies in outfits everyday 🙈🤷🏾‍♀️ I used all of the clothes-clothes

    2. Vloggers kept saying not to bring to the hospital was makeup, but I liked throwing on some really light makeup each morning

    3. I'm a fan of the hospital nursery. I sent DS there every night and they would wheel him in every couple hours for feedings. It was great!

  • @marbellie Amen to #2 and #3! It was hard enough to sleep in the hospital as it was with the nurses popping in every 5 freaking minutes; I utilized the nursery as often as possible!
  • The only hospital I’ve delivered at is “baby friendly” in other words, not mom friendly lol there was no nursery, but I did ask a nurse to take the baby and push her around with her for a few hours last time and it was amazing.

It’s so crazy that new moms are supposed to go through this traumatic medical event and then be superheroes that don’t need sleep or space or anything. I wouldn’t hand a newborn to anyone else that was required to stay in the hospital 2-3 days lol
  • Like @doodleoodle I've only given birth at a "baby friendly" hospital so I've never even had the option of a nursery, which I agree is dumb.  I hadn't slept well in days before my contractions started and then was in labor for 24 hours so by the time he was born I was exhausted!  It would have been much better to get a few hours of uninterrupted sleep knowing my baby was well taken care of.

This reminds me of the most messed up thing we had to do after DS was born,  that I've always wondered if other hospitals did/ still do it.  DH and I both had to shake a robotic baby doll so violently that it's head lit up to simulate shaken baby syndrome. It was super weird and kind of traumatic for me. Did anyone else's hospital have that policy?
  • We used the nursery once during my 4-day stay in the hospital. I don't know that I personally got much value out of it. DS was cluster feeding most of the time we were there so he was either passed out sleeping, in which case I could sleep too, or he was attached to my boob.
@artsiefartsie That's so messed up. What is the value of that?! My hospital did not do that, but they DID require I watch a very emotional SIDS prevention video with all these parents talking about how they just woke up one morning to find out their baby wasn't breathing and I can't believe someone decided it was appropriate to force newly postpartum women (some of whom may be recovering from a traumatic birth/delivery and/or have babies in intensive care) to watch something like that. So. Messed. Up.
  • Omg amen to the nursery. I had a really complicated/dangerous birth and ended up in the ICU so it was so key to my recovery. It helped that our hospital is really small, like max 2 people giving birth at any given time, and there are only 4 beds for the maternity ward - the nursery is right there in the ward. I think the proximity and lack of babies set my mind at ease (also I was in no position to deal with a newborn). Bless those L&D angel nurses

  • I'm so surprised y'all appreciate it too, I was semi prepared to be flamed for the nursery comment 😂 I was in labor for 5 days with no real sleep, so after birth that real sleep finally was AMAZING. Also, after labor for some reason the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from the kitchens tasted like the best thing ever (had one everyday).
  • I agree with the nurseries! I have had two babies and never slept at all in the hospital because it's impossible and no nursery!
  • @marbellie Oh, I was flamed for it, I just didn’t give a shit.
