Re: GTKY - Sandwich Crusts

  • I was kind of forced to lol my mom always said “it’s good for you” but I’m not sure how true that is. Now, it’s the first part of the sandwich I eat to get it over with. I probably won’t be cutting my kids’ off. There was a woman I worked with (pretty sure she was 23) and her mom still made her lunches for her and one day her mom forgot to cut the crust off her sandwich and she basically had a mini angry meltdown and we were all like “uhm….”

  • I honestly don't really remember. We didn't eat that many sandwiches maybe? My dad loves crusty bread so there was a pretty pro-crust sentiment in our house, probably we ate them.
  • I did not eat the crust on my sandwiches as a kid. I do now, but I still don't prefer that part of the bread. No one in our house will eat the ends of the bread loaves.
  • My parents were not the type to cut them off, but they also wouldn't make me eat them. These days you can tell I'm getting  full because I'll start out eating the crust but by the end I'm only eating the best bites and none of the crust
  • My parents didn’t cater to our wants and cries. We were given what we were given and expected to eat it. DH on the other hand was catered to and it SHOWS! He is the baby of the family and his mother made him special dinners because he wouldn’t eat a lot of the things she made. I will NOT be doing that with me kids. We’ve had a few nights where the kids don’t eat, and the food sits on the table until they are ready to eat it. Not gonna create picky eaters in my house!
  • Always had to eat them- "waste not, want not!" Plus, they supposedly were they healthy part w fiber, like skins on apples?? Idk.

I make my kids eat them, it never really has been an issue that's come up. They eat their sandwiches or they don't get anything else.
  • I had, and still have, a lot of sensory sensitivity with certain foods, mostly textures, but I don't think crusts were ever an issue.  I don't love super hard crusty bread, but with enough butter I'll eat any and all bread 😆.

DS doesn't like sandwiches at all, and will only eat stuff deconstructed, but he has a lot of my sensory stuff and doesn't like his food mixing.  He won't eat peanut butter sandwiches, but loves peanut butter toast, crust and all. He won't eat a hamburger, but will take it apart and eat it all separately. 🤷‍♀️ He eats well so I'm a happy camper.
  • @jenniferjoy37 I was a picky kid too, and I’m pretty sure that if I weren’t catered to as often (my mom was legit worried I’d starve), I might have had a more defined palette as a child. THAT SAID, whatever we make Arlo (which might not be what we have because he eats dinner at freaking 5pm), he either eats or he doesn’t. Thus far, he hasn’t suffered once from hunger, so I think we’re doing the right thing 👍🏼
  • Yes I ate crust. My mom managed to raise a pretty adventurous eater. My husband is picky and I kind of cringe when my daughter demands I cut crust off. Ugh so his fault, but at the same time I’m not in the mood to fight it.
  • I think I ate crust, although I am not sure. I know I hated plain white cheap loaf bread because it was chewy and the texture got to me. I was a bit of a fussy child though, but that was just me, my parents fed me anything they had but I just chose what I did and didn't want. Funnily enough I hated vegetables and now I am basically a vegetarian. Oh how things change!
  • I don't think I even knew not eating the crust was a thing until now 🤔 That's so interesting! All to say that I definitely ate it, also my toddler loves bread (like mother like son) so I think he'll keep taking down the crust too
  • We always ate the crust in our house. It really wasn't an option given to us. I think maybe one of my sisters would pick hers off sometimes, but I don't really remember.
  • We did not grow up eating bread. But as an adult I love the grilled crusts and don’t mind the ungrilled crust. My husband prefers I cut the crust off for him. Stopped special catering after we got the first child. She eats what we eat but of late she is getting picky. But I hear she eats everything at pre school. Guess she is sure we won’t let her starve and pushes us at home, while she knows she won’t get anything to eat if she missed the lunch time at preschool. 2 year olds are cunning!
