This is one of my favorite book quotes (from Tolkien's Return of the King):
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”
I also like this one from Tolstoy's Anna Karenina:
“He stepped down, trying not to look long at her, as if she were the sun, yet he saw her, like the sun, even without looking.”
"...it is a well known fact, that those people who most want to rule people are, ipso facto, those least suited to do it. To summarize the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made President should on no account be allowed to do the job." - Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
"For there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so." - William Shakespeare, Hamlet
"Everybody needs something that they can feel good about hating." - Midsomer Murders
