I feel like this question is a little weird since we're all still in a pandemic haha - does anyone go to the movies rn? I used to like going to the movies! It's fun! But obviously I haven't been in like a year and a half, and I probably won't feel comfortable going until a lot more people are vaccinated than are currently. I think for some movies seeing it in theaters makes a difference, but most are pretty good with the hd screens we all have at home these days
It depends on the movie, some things just have to be played on the big screen for the full effect. But I love going to early showings when the theater is basically empty. I refuse to go if it is packed, takes all the enjoyment out of it for me.
Some things just feel gross to me now and the movies is one of them. Which is a shame because it was a great excuse to get a pretzel with cheese and an icee. 😂
Ah we used to love going to the movies! We would get a pack from BJs so it cost just $9 a ticket and I would only go to the theater that had cocktails and reclining chairs lol.... Can't wait to do that again
I stopped going to the movies prior to the pandemic because my local theater was charging $20 per ticket and then if you wanted snacks or beverages on top of that.. it's just waaaaay too much for the "experience" of being in a theater in my humble opinion. I like going to the movies otherwise (assuming it's not packed) but I guess I'm just frugal.
ETA: Thinking about it, the last time I went to the movies was actually for a special event where every week or month they were showing a different movies from Studio Ghibli (kind of like Japan's equivalent of Disney animation studios). So I'm most likely to go to the theater for special movie showings, I guess.
I definitely prefer going to the movies but because it’s gotten so expensive over the years, I only go if it’s a movie I really want to see. Otherwise, if it was like only $5 a ticket I’d see pretty much every movie released. I love it.
@mayoduck, same here. I prefer to go for special events but our theater does throwbacks. For example, the last movie I saw pre-COVID was Beetlejuice the week before Halloween. They do somewhat discounted tickets and have different themes each month. It's kinda fun to make a production out of an 80s movie and people tend to get really into it, especially because you've seen it a million times so it's easy to just enjoy it vs following a story, characters, etc. Otherwise, the theaters have gotten very expensive and it just became more cost effective to watch and snack at home.
@mayoduck I sneak snacks in via a big purse! Dollar store snacks are the best!
I loved going to the movies and getting lost in the screen. I miss it. Home movies just aren’t as good, except for DH can rub my feet while watching a movie now. Haha.
I like going, but now I can only attend ones with the bougie recliners and an adult beverage
That said, since having a kid, Jeff and I prefer to go on dates where we can talk and enjoy one another's company. Going to a movie feels like wasted connection time.
My husband loves going to the movies. I’m starting to really miss going at this point. I’ll be glad when it’s safe to go back to share movie theater experiences with our kids.
@doodleoodle my husband is a huge Pixar fan, so we’ve brought our kids to each Disney and Pixar movie released since 2016–when my oldest was barely 9 months old (8?). 😐 Thankfully it isn’t an activity the littlest request often during the pandemic, so I’m not breaking hearts over the theater too often. Lol

I so miss the cinema. The smell of overpriced popcorn. The trying to shimmy out and not annoy anyone if you need to pee. The loudness of everything, that made me nervous anytime I was seeing something slightly scary/jumpy. 😂 The first movie me and my now partner saw together, as friends at the time, was the Joker. Intense lol
I worked at a theatre during high school/collage. It brings back so many good memories! I miss it for sure. Although I think i’ve only seen kid movies for the past seven years 😆. We saw frozen 2 right before all this started and haven’t been back.
When I worked there a group of us brought in an entire pizza to eat. Haha.
Onward is amazing!!! DS LOVES Soul, it’s one of the movies that actually calms his almost 2 year old tantrum driven self down! DS is into Princess and the Frog right now... before it was all the Toy Story movies...
@jenniferjoy37 When the kids want to watch a princess movie I always try to steer them toward Princess and The Frog (for the independence and work ethic) or Frozen (for the healthy relationships). Kristof in Frozen 2 I think was really pandering to women BUT it worked for me. Lol he’s the best Disney Prince hands down and I’d run away and start a new life with him 🤣
@doodleoodle We just watched Onward! So funny because DH said he wasn't in the mood for a "feelings" movie, so we went with Onward and then it got going and I was like... oh wait, this is a Pixar movie and Pixar always seems to know how to get you right in the feels. Oops! Lol. Still enjoyed it though!
When I watched Soul and the barbershop scene happened I paused it and told my husband "oh they really had black people in the creative rooms!" Twas a nice touch
Also, DS is absolutely enthralled by Tangled right now, his first favorite movie was Moana though.
@doodleoodle I cry each time with Soul, it's a beautiful movie. My DH is BIG into movies, watching them, watching people react to them, we have all the movie streaming platforms. I do miss sitting in a theater where DH has to stay quiet and just eat popcorn at home he talks about actors and I want them to stay in character in my mind. For my DD birthday we were renting out a theater for family and then the governor decided to bring back restrictions making it so we couldn't have food in the theater so we canceled that.

Otherwise I agree I think some movies are better on the big screen, but most are just as good at home.
