Handmaid’s Tale: Are you watching the new season? Any thoughts? (Please put any spoilers in the spoiler box.)

For those who don’t watch, what’s your go-to binge-worthy show right now?

I read the book and am traumatized, but figured since I was already traumatized I’d try the show since I’ve heard such good things. Then the first scene was the main part from the book that is haunting me, so I had to quit.

We’re watching Schitt’s Creek for the second time and also DH wants to watch How I Met Your Mother so we watched the first episode but I don’t know how much he will actually like it so we will see.

  • Haha, I took the opposite approach to you, @bows22. I read the book and was traumatized so I’ve avoided the show.

I’m here for the other binge-worthy suggestions as I’m between shows right now. I do love re-watching The Great British Baking Show every once in awhile though. It’s so soothing and makes me think I could be an epic pastry chef! I mean, I won’t be, but I’m pretending that time is the only thing holding me back.

  • I have not watched the entire 1st season... it's a great show but it super creeps me out, a little to close to reality maybe?  MH keeps asking about watching it because he wants to start and I always tell him no, I'm not interested in starting it over again.
I might need to just bite the bullet and watch it.  It's only a TV show, right?
@bows22 I LOVE Schitt's Creek.  It is such an amazing show and you really get sucked into the characters.
@abjm0325 Great British Baking Show is a favorite here.  MH thinks that the judges are jerks for critiquing the bakers, but uh, that's what the show is about.  Also, they pick judges with lots of experience who know what they're talking about.

I've started watching Firefly Lane on Netflix.  I like that one quite a bit so far.

  • I don't watch! But I am super into Mare of East Town! Oh and naked and afraid haha
  • I’ve been watching Handmaid’s Tale!! I watched the show before I realized it was a book (same with Bridgerton actually). Enjoying this season so far!
  • I don’t watch much TV but I’ve read the book! I thought there was some good concepts and it was a fascinating story line but there were other ideologies in it that I felt like were unnecessary. Over all definitely makes you think and  has a strong case for less government mandates haha

ooooh i watch Handmaid's Tale, and have read the book, have not started this season yet. plans to binge the first 3 eps tomorrow night.
  • I haven’t watched this season yet. The book is great and the first season of the show captured it well. But last season kinda went a little off the rails. But I’ll still watch the new season eventually.

DH and I have been watching Broadchurch. We like British crime dramas and Broadchurch is so good. I’d watch Olivia Colman read a cereal box, honestly, so any show with her I’m obsessed. We also have been watching Modern Family and we binged all of Big Bang Theory. Neither of us tends to watch shows while they’re actually running so we’re basically catching up with what was popular 2-3 years ago. I will say we both love Marvel so we watched Wandavision and Falcon/Winter Soldier.
  • @rachelredhead ahhhhh Broadchurch is soooo good. i watched it a few years ago, she is just a gem of an actress. and yes HT got a little "out there" i'll be curious how this season goes.
  • I read both books and love it. a friend and I have a ritual where we watch the show together and split a slice of cake from our favorite cafe. we're both vaccinated fully so very glad we get to continue our ritual! it's definitely thought provoking (the books and show alike) and I think they did a good job of faithfully reproducing the material for the screen but still being entertaining for the medium.

Haven't started the new season yet but I've yet to watch the new season...hoping it redeems itself from last season. I always have a show I watch by myself and another one with hubs. Right now I'm watching Younger (5 seasons in two weeks 😅) and together we're watching The Crown.

@rachelredhead we tried watching Wanda vision and got through two episodes. I was at least entertained by the sitcom throwbacks but hubby hated it. Is it going somewhere? Do I need to stick it out??? We usually love Marvel but it was so strange....

@abjm0325 - I do the same thing with The Great British Baking Show! It's just so weird to me that they chose Noel Fielding to host. He's such a wild card, but I love it.

@bows22 - I looooooove Schitt's Creek! I just posted a meme yesterday that said I want Moira Rose to be my GPS voice, lol. My mom sometimes sends me inane text messages about my niece or nephew (she's helping raise them, so they live with her), and I'll read them out loud to MH in my best Moira Rose voice. "Stephen's favorite food is toasted hamburger buns" or "Annie's favorite dinosaur is a broccoli-saurus" have been recent favorites.

I watched the first two seasons of The Handmaid's Tale. It's good, but I haven't gone back to it since we first watched it a while back. I've avoided it given the current social climate. I didn't want it to mess with my head.

I'll go through binge-watching phases. Recently it's been My 600lb Life. I love Dr. Now, he's so lowkey sassy.

  • @gardenvariety88 for the first 3 or so episodes DH and I were frequently muttering, “wtf?” 😂 We kept plugging along and ended up really enjoying it!
  • I’m with @bows22 on Handmaids and Schitt’s Creek! I got about 1/2 way through the 2nd season on Handmaids, but I was just so upset every time I watched it decided it wasn’t worth it. I LOVE Elisabeth Moss, but It’s just too rough. I vividly remember when I finished the book (years ago, before the show was around) and sitting on my bed for a solid chunk of time just going “what the f*...”. I watched Schitt’s on my own, but I’m thinking about re-watching with MH. He’s not usually into quirky comedy, but sometimes he surprises me and I’m itching to rewatch it.

@rachelredhead love Olivia Coleman! I love watching her on talk shows. She’s just so delightful.

@gardenvariety88 I love Younger!! I haven’t watched the last season yet, I’ve heard it’s disappointing, but I’ll still watch. I’m sad it’s  over-I’ve been with the show since the beginning!

MH and I have pretty different tastes in entertainment, so it can be hard to find something. We just finished The Morning Show and Ted Lasso and they were both SO good that we’re kind of in a slump of what to watch next because we’re sad we finished those.
  • @distractedbyshinyobjects we can’t wait for the second season of Ted Lasso!

Schitt’s Creek is totally the show I watch when I’m sad and need some silly goodness in my life. I love it so much.
  • @distractedbyshinyobjects I wasn't really optimistic about Younger but its been such a fun show to watch! I'm sad I'm getting so close to the last season. Also loved Ted Lasso and The Morning Show! Thank you MIL for sharing her Apple password. Can't wait for second seasons! Sounds like our TV apps would be gooooood friends 😂

@rachelredhead That was definitely us. I think I have to tough it out... I need to know.
  • @bows22 @abjm0325 I was traumatized by the violence of the first episode of Game of Thrones and couldn’t finish it. I didn’t watch it again until years later, and then became a GoT convert. So I kind of used that experience to commit myself to Handmaid’s Tale LOL. It was similarly shocking at first, but I stuck it out and was immediately drawn in by the dystopian possibilities of “what if”.

In my regular life I am very interested in the ideas of politics and what makes society work, how masses of people are coerced into group-think, persuaded to do unthinkable things, etc. So HT hits those areas of interest for me. Also, the storylines in HT hit so close to our current reality! It’s so impressive that the author was able to imagine this reality decades before. I think it’s a great warning to take heed about trying to control what women do with their bodies—and also a blaring warning about how prevalent infertility is becoming in both men & women all across the globe.
  • Aaaaand to lighten up my response a bit😆

@abjm0325 Another soothing one we like is “Escape to the Chateau”. The couple renovated their gorgeous dilapidated French chateau over several years/TV seasons; they make their money by hosting small weddings and bespoke dinner weekends. It’s so relaxing to watch.

@boymama2018 Oooh, if you like Naked and Afraid, have you checked out “Alone”? It is another survival-in-the-wilderness show—it is SO good!

@rachelredhead @gardenvariety88 I didn’t realize last season of Handmaid’s Tale wasn’t as popular as the previous. I didn’t love it but didn’t know why; the final episode made it all worthwhile. This season looks like A LOT happens quickly. I’m excited for it. @jlbaker08 Yes, bite the bullet!

    @gingermama29 @anniemarie887 @chgilmore I will be watching with you this week!😁

  • @keikilove ooh I’ve never heard of escape to the chateau but that sounds right up my alley, I’ll have to check it out!!
  • @boymama2018 I'll second @keikilove on Alone, it is really good!  MH and I have decided that I'd do much better on that show than he would.  Despite the fact that he's spent more time in the wilderness, I'm more likely to avoid the psychological downfall

  • @keikilove @jlbaker08 ohhhh!! I will have to check it out! Where can I find it? I love watching with my husband haha. Many times on the regular (not XL) ones the women make it longer than the men. lol.
  • I am a non-watcher, but I was enjoying my afternoons binge watching Poldark last week! :)  I feel like I never get to do that.

I always end up watching it, but haven't yet. It annoys me how there's so much time between seasons that I forget everything from the previous season.

In terms of binge watching, I’m currently on a first responder kick and have been watching 9-1-1 and 9-1-1 Lonestar.

@babyodo I just saw a tiktok today of a GPS in Moira’s voice!
  • @BusinessWife mmmm I loved Poldark!!
