Re: Product Spotlight: Toys! w/o 4-19

  • Haha oh man, I’ll have to think about this. We had a Lamaze moose that both boys loved. Plus some kind of interesting toy to keep them busy in the car. Otherwise idk if babies really need any toys. Noisy books are awesome though!

  • Ok I went through pictures of DS from his first year to find toys that he liked and always had with him so here is a pretty good list of his favorites and because I was scrolling through pictures they kind of go in age order of when he played with them.

Not sure if this counts as a toy but we used the Razbaby pacifiers and loved this penguin for it because it kept the paci close and gave DS something to hang onto. He liked the penguin more than the paci itself.

DS also loved this Baby Einstein steering wheel. It kept him happy with the lights and sounds when we were in the car.

Baby paper is amazing! Perfect sensory toy!

Any type of link set like this is great! They can be used to link toys or paci's to car seats or strollers and the link themselves are great for grabbing and mouthing.

The Winkle is a great rattle! It went everywhere with us.
Manhattan Toy Winkel Rattle Sensory Teether Toy

This nursery rhymes book. Although you gotta watch their little fingers because DS liked to get his in between the pages and then lean on it or close it on his own fingers.

  • My daughter was obsessed with this fox we had (Skip Hop Bandana Buddies) - they have a ton of animals. She brought it with us everywhere until she was about a year.
Once they are walking I second the walker toy @krash_ listed above.
Also some sort of water table for outside is awesome - fill it with warm water when it’s a bit chilly or cool water when it’s super hot out.
We also love our kids height table. We use it constantly for crafts and games etc. My daughter also sat at it to eat before she was big enough to be at a big girl chair. We got a kids picnic table for outside this year and it’s awesome to be able to park the kids with an activity!

My son LOVED this skip hop activity table.

He was pretty early to hold his head up, and liked being up and "independent." My husband called it his desk and said he was "doing paperwork" when he spent time there.

I liked that it wasn't loud annoying colors and that it converts into a toddler height table when your kid is done sitting inside it.

  • Infants are the best! They are entertained by ceiling fans, the dog, mom’s hand, and solo cups.

Once J started playing more he liked any variety of toys in a big plastic bowl (in and out was big for him) especially anything with tags or that crinkled. He also was obsessed with these little book sets and he still plays with them at 4. He liked putting them and and out of the case and after he started walking carrying them around.

  • @paulpaw Oh! similar, my son loved these flash cards and they did wonders for fine motor skills when he was little and would try to get them in the box. They all have some sort of texture too and are great for talking about words and colors (we also have other themed sets, animals and something else...)

  • If I remember correctly the first thing my son actually played with was an empty kirkland water bottle.  He liked to squish it and hear it crinkle.  Alternatively we would fill them with a bit of rice, coloured water or popcorn kernels. Most actual toys he had no interest in for at least the first 6 months.
  • We are also team skiphop activity center! So good! Also the quarterly toy boxes from LovEvery are really good - developmentally focused for your baby’s specific age. We just got our 25-27 month box and it’s probably the best one yet! Such a good subscription.
  • I once saw a suggestion for sleep training where they recommended giving your baby a comfort blanket (small! like washcloth size) or something similar. We use security blanket stuffed animals for our kiddos, ex

And the kids LOVE them. I started giving them a blanket-stuffed animal regularly to snuggle around 6-9 months and now both their blanket buddies are my kiddos' favorite toys/BFF. I got a back up for each once I knew for sure they loved them which proves handy when they go missing at bedtime or are involved in a potty accident. They're super easy to find, ex Carter's, Toys R Us, Buybuybaby. I just avoided ones that seemed too big for young babies to sleep with.
  • @marymh80 we just registered for the SkipHop activity center! Not exactly the same one, but pretty close! What sold me was that it converted to a table. Now we need to find one of those little baby gym mat things that we like.
  • We also had that Skip Hop activity center! Used it for over 2.5 years with DS and just recently changed it out for the kids sensory bin table from Ikea.

@emeraldduchess we went with this play mat because we did a woodland theme for DS so it fit with that.

  • @sleepydaze I tried a few of those with my son and he picked his own lovey and still uses it. I remember getting it at my shower and saying to myself boy that is one ugly elephant but that’s what he chose.

It happened to be from Target which is the worst place to get a double of this kind of stuff because they switch in and out of things so quickly. I ended up having to by an extra on Ebay and paid $20 plus $5.99 shipping for a $7 elephant. And sweet baby J knew the difference and wanted no parts of new, expensive, Eli.

So random that there is a whole business in buying a bunch of random stuffed baby items and selling them for triple on eBay to poor parents who just want to sleep and find out that item is no longer in stores.
  • @emeraldduchess This time, I'm looking at a wooden one that is collapsible because baby gear takes us SO MUCH room (and we already have a ton of quilts/blankets and don't need a play-specific one)

  • @marymh80 @krash_ those are both adorable!
@muggsd I just registered for that little fox. So cute!
My nephew has this elephant and he loves it. It sings, flaps its ears, and plays peek-a-boo. He's obsessed with any toy that makes noise, but this is one of his favorites.
