Product Spotlight 03/10: Misc. Nursery Decor

(So sorry this is late! Allergies kicked my butt yesterday.)

Hi all! Now that we have the serious stuff out of the way in our Nursery Series, let's indulge in the more frivolous side: how are you going to decorate those sweet little baby rooms and what products do you want to recommend and showcase for other moms?

What are some general decor items you feel complete your room? Some that come to mind are rugs, throw pillows, blankets, curtains, wall decor (pictures, posters, decals, or paint brand/colors), and lighting choices. Are there any brands you recommend for those items? Website sources? Shopping guidelines? Things to avoid?

Or rather than having products as a starting point, what is your theme and what products did the theme lead to? How about color scheme, and what products help strategize the development of that theme or color scheme? Or, do you have an awesome array of hand-me-down products and want advice on how to put it all together or create a theme out of it? Please share!

Re: Product Spotlight 03/10: Misc. Nursery Decor

  • My nursery with DD1 was pink and gray and somewhat an elephant theme (mostly because that was what I found in those colors). I made a wall collage with quotes and cute pictures.
With DD2, I added some splashes of teal to the theme, changed out the curtain, added a few pictures to the collage. I also did a few more flowers with her bedsheets and changing covers.
With DS, I'm going to switch out all the pink for navy blue, so it will be a navy blue, teal, and gray room. Mostly this is just bedsheets, blankets, changing pad cover. But I'm also updating the collage. With all the kids I made a yarn wrapped letter like this, but I'm waiting until we pick a name to do DS's. Most of the wall decor I used came from Hobby Lobby and Target.

  • Theme-wise I think we're going to stick with mountains/forest animals. We have some hiking maps up on the wall anyway, so I figure we can leave those up. Might get some wall decals, but haven't thought much about it yet, most of the "decor" will have more to do with sheets and stuff. The walls are a golden yellow, which is a little awkward, but can make it work (I don't want to repaint it, it was just painted about a year ago).

Aside from main furniture, planning to eventually get an area rug (floor is hardwood) and new curtains. Our community has a lot of bright lamps outdoors, so want to get some blackout curtains/shades at a minimum so it gets darker in there. The current curtains we have are very thin because I love natural light, but not that great if someone's going to sleep in there.
  • Our "theme" (if you can even call it that) is night sky. We have 3 grey walls and one accent wall, so that wall is being changed into a mural that DH is painting. We have a little sign that has his name on it that we got from a website called 48 Hour Monogram. Its cute and it was reasonably priced, so we went with it. We're also getting furniture knobs to go on the Ikea dresser/wardrobe that we picked out.

The floor is carpeted, so we're not doing an area rug, at least for now. We are going to get some blackout curtains for the window. I feel like we're going very basic, but I honestly am not the type to do much decor in general. The mural is a huge step for me. I'm way more comfortable with a solid blue accent wall and some peel and stick decals.

I can't wait to get this all set up so that I can post pics! Please, everyone, share pictures when you have them!

  • I’ve been thinking about just reusing all of our nursery decor from DS1’s nursery. It makes me super sad to not get to decorate a whole new room, especially because DS2 didn’t have a nursery. But we don’t have much help with the kids we have and it’s so hard to do projects that reusing what we have would probably mean a decorated room versus a not decorated space because we didn’t have the time to make it happen. Still makes me sad, though.

  • Our nursery with Baby 2 is star themed. DS was woodland. The room was already a deep royal blue color, so we got some art work and some star and moon wall decals. We got the star pattern diaper caddy, star sheets and changing pad cover.

One thing I got that has been a game changer is a rug pad. We got a cute 5x7 rug with stars on it and my mom convinced me to get a 1/2 inch rug pad to go under it. OMG, it is so luxurious!!!! I keep walking in to the nursery in my barefeet to feel the plush carpet. I am now getting a pad for under our family room rug in anticipation of all the tummy time and time spent on the floor. Hardwood floors are not kind to old bottoms!

  • @DoubleUp8 I love it! And you have convinced me I need lots of rug pads in my life!

  • Ok this is my nursery ideas. I am going to do an accent wall as well and the name on the wall but I’ll wait to decide in July what exactly I want.

  • @AKuzReve i love that rug!
  • @ramzlau Yes! You won't regret it! I would just say, go for the thicker 1/2 inch pad in rooms where you sit on the floor. Thinner ones are probably fine in a room like a dining room. We have only done the nursery and have the one in the mail for the family room/playroom. But it made the $50 nursery rug feel like a $500 rug!

@mrs_massie That's so fun that they are surprising you with the nursery decor and what a great idea to use pinterest so they stick to your vision.

This baby will be sharing a room with her brother once she is sleeping through the night but even before then all of her 'stuff' will be in the nursery.  We basically just need a second dresser and a crib but I'm at a loss of how I want to rearrange everything.  My mom is coming to visit this weekend and I'm determined to figure it all out before she leaves.

  • @mrs_massie That’s such an amazing gift. I hate decorating so I am insanely jealous of this! I can’t wait to see how it looks. I like all your inspiration pictures.
