Re: Product Spotlight: Diapering w/o 2-15

  • Ooh, I could talk for awhile about cloth diapers!
    • Favorite [diaper/accessory]: For disposables, I was always happy with Target brand. For cloth diapering, this will be a novel.
Newborns: preferred using Green Mountain Diaper prefolds with a snappy and thirsties cover for newborns. They are so easily laundered, and cheap enough to get a whole bunch and not feel like you're spending a fortune. Plus, newborns don't wriggle and crawl very much, so spending a few extra seconds to secure a prefold was no big deal.

Older Infants & Toddlers: I still used prefolds as my son got bigger, but also added in all kinds of other types and brands of diapers. Ultimately, I liked pocket diapers best, and preferred to use GMD prefolds instead of the microfiber inserts most diapers came with. They are bulkier, but I had fewer problems with leaking and washing. Pocket diapers are simple to put on, meaning I could change the diaper of my toddler as he was standing up easily.

Overnights: Fitted diapers with thirsties covers were the best! I loved the GMD workhorse, but also tired other brands, like Sustainablebabyish and even homemade fitteds, and I was happy with the results. I could even pop a tri-folded newborn prefold on top for added absorbancy if needed.
    • Link/picture:
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): $$? Compared to buying disposables for multiple babies there's definitely a cost savings!
    • What you like about it: Felt better about our impact on the environment
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: The bulk was not so cute!
    • Is there a [diaper/accessory] you don't have but are considering? Why?: I'd like to try esembly brand with this baby, I'll probably order a couple sets. I still have my entire stash from baby #1, so I don't neeeeeed to supplement at all.
    • Additional thoughts on [diaper/accessory]: Besides loving Green Mountain Diaper prefolds, I was not brand-loyal at all. I never felt like any of the pocket diapers were particularly better than others, and tended to favor them only for whatever print I thought was cutest. All-in-ones are more annoying to launder and take longer to dry since you're not usually supposed to put them in the dryer. If baby is not exclusively breastfeeding, you'll need to plop the poo in the toilet before washing. I had a diaper sprayer, but more often would just use a small wad of toilet paper to wipe it off into the toilet. Washing is definitely the part that requires the most trial/error and research, but once you find something that works and get in a groove, it's easy to keep up. We did have some rash issues, when we'd have to switch temporarily to disposables in order to use triple paste while stripping the diapers, but it wasn't really that big of a pain. I think cloth can seem really daunting, but there are so many ways to try it out without committing a ton of money to a huge stash up front. If you're curious, I'd suggest getting a few different kinds in newborn sizes to try out in the beginning. Cloth diapering a newborn is actually the easiest time to try, and you can always use some disposables if you don't have enough cloth to get through a day. Disposables last a very very very long time in a landfill, and while I know the slight inconvenience of the extra laundry isn't worth it for many, it's really not that bad!

    • Favorite [diaper/accessory]: Pampers Pure! I also love Honest Company for the patterns but I hate that they don’t have the wet strip
    • Link/picture: n/a
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): about $40 for the big box of 120 at target
    • What you like about it: Good for sensitive skin, cute patterns

    • What you don't like about it, if anything: Now that we’re in toddler mode we sometimes get more leaks than we used to but I think this would happen with any diaper of you saw the way my kid flips all over the place in her sleep LOL!

    • Is there a [diaper/accessory] you don't have but are considering? Why?: n/a
    • Additional thoughts on [diaper/accessory]: If you are having a baby shower I highly recommend doing a diaper raffle. With DD we didn’t buy a single solitary diaper for 6 months!!!! That’s when we decided pampers pure was our favorite brand and we stuck with it. Before, we’d just use whatever we had left from the raffle
  • @Aerialmrs I actually hate Target diapers lol! I didn't like how hard the Velcro was to get off.

I'm just going to ramble and not follow my own prompts  :D

I loathe Pampers diapers because I don't like the scent. Huggies are cheaper and unscented so we always went with those. I liked the Little Snugglers for little babies, they are so soft and they have a poop catcher flap on the back for up the back blow outs. As DS got older we started using the Snug & Dry because they were cheaper. Never had any issues.

For wipes we use the Huggies Natural Care Sensitive because they are unscented and have the fewest ingredients. Similar to water wipes but less expensive.

Butt cream we like Butt Paste for every day use by DS tended to get an icky tush quickly so I swear by this homemade magic butt cream:

A mom on my first BMB is a pharmacist and recommended it because they compound this for elderly bedridden patients and it works like a dream!

Lastly, a bum brush. Why get your hands messy with butt cream when you don't have to?

  • We use cloth diapers 90% of the time and when we do use disposable I just buy whatever brand is on sale...I've never had an issue with any disposable diaper. We also mostly use cloth wipes, but I do prefer pampers disposable wipes over any other brand and I hate water wipes (maybe unpopular opinion) but they aren't strong and I always feel like I need to use 2-3 wipes for one diaper change.

    For cloth:
    • Favorite [diaper/accessory]: We mostly use prefolds with Thirsties covers for newborn through about 18 months when my skinny legged babies start to get to chunky for prefold wraps. But I also have some Thirsties AIOs and a bunch of random brand pockets - Bumgenius, Blueberry, and Rumparooz are probably my favorite for pockets.
    • Link/picture:
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): can be expensive to get started, but if you are planning to have more than 1 kid it's soooo much cheaper!
    • What you like about it: environmentally friendly and saves money!
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: definitely the bulk - sometimes cute outfits will look a little silly.
    • Is there a [diaper/accessory] you don't have but are considering? Why?: the only cloth diaper accessory you need is a diaper sprayer!
    • Additional thoughts on [diaper/accessory]: If you are interested in trying cloth - check with a local baby boutique that sells cloth diapers! When I was pregnant with DS1 our local CD store had a newborn diaper rental program so we were able to try out a bunch of different styles and see what we liked/what worked best before committing to anything
  • We cloth diaper! I started later because my son had extremely sensitive skin and we were spending so much money on creams and brand name diapers and he had bleeding diaper rashes all the time. Switched to cloth and his rashes instantly went away. I feel like it’s easier than disposable, we’ve had less leaks and never poopsploded a cloth diaper. We also use coconut oil as diaper cream and it lasts forever and is cheap.
    • Favorite [diaper/accessory]: we use best bottom inserts and covers. I also have some thirsties, hemp inserts, and a few pockets but I’m not here for the stuffing lol.
    • Link/picture: https://nickisdiapers.com/collections/best-bottom
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): $$?
    • Is there a [diaper/accessory] you don't have but are considering? Why?: I’m thinking for newborn I’ll do GMD prefolds or the smaller  workhorses. I tried workhorses with DS2 when he was bigger but they leaked.
    • Additional thoughtson[diaper/accessory]: getting the nighttime routine down was probably the hardest for us. The kid PEES. When we were doing disposable I used to add a sploosie pad in a night time diaper to absorb it all.
Happy to answer any cloth diapering questions!
    • Favorite [diaper/accessory]: Kirkland Brand
    • Link/picture:https://www.costco.ca/kirkland-signature-diapers-size-1,-192-count.product.100648833.html
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): ~$34-40 CAD
    • What you like about it: I like the way they fit, they had the wet indicator, and my son never had any issues with them.
    • What you don't like about it, if anything:n/a
    • Is there a [diaper/accessory] you don't have but are considering? Why?:nope
    • Additional thoughts on [diaper/accessory]:none.
    • Favorite [diaper/accessory]: boy mom of 2 and swear by Huggies. They catch all the pee.
    • Link/picture:
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): I think they’re average priced and I buy them at target when they run deals of buy 2 get a gift card or something like that. Plus coupons!
    • What you like about it: the little smugglers are SUPER soft, line indicator and really fit well. The only ones I don’t like are the cheaper snug and dry. They don’t hold as much for nighttime diapers and they feel cheap.
  • I liked swaddlers and pampers pure when my son was little, then target brand once he was bigger.

My biggest suggestion if you’ve tried all the brands and still get leaks- sposies. My son pees a TON at night and we’ve needed these inserts for the last year or so
    • Favorite [diaper/accessory]: I’ve done cloth and disposables. My favorite disposable diaper is Kirkland! They are literally huggies for way cheaper!/ my favorite accessory is Babygoal baby cloth diaper covers. They’re great for cloth- I think on par with thirstees brand, but also amazing for extra blow-out protection over a disposable (like on a longer  car ride), and as a swim cover! They’re double gusseted so they really prevent a lot of potential blow outs
             Babygoal Baby Adjustable... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RFGZ3AE?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): $
    • What you like about it: cheap and multipurpose
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: I don’t like how easily blow outs happen with disposables, and I don’t like the extra laundry of cloth
    • Is there a [diaper/accessory] you don't have but are considering? Not really Why?: I have used so many already
    • Additional thoughts on [diaper/accessory]: if going through disposable route you’ll probably find that brands fit differently on different babies, so don’t be afraid to try another kind. Know that most brand name diaper companies are selling similar if not the same diapers cheaper under different names.    /    If cloth diapering remember that ultimately at the end of the day these are pee and poop rags- you don’t have to kill yourself keeping them spotless! OH! and ALWAYS look for a double gusset on the leg!
    • Favorite [diaper/accessory]: cloth pocket diapers are my go to.
    • Link/picture: we have a bunch of brands. Alva, bumgenius, rumparooz, others
    • Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): $$$ (compared to disposables per diaper)
    • What you like about it: I love the cost savings! We do cloth during the day and disposables at night. I never found a way to cloth overnight that didn’t result in crazy leaks so this works best for us.
    • What you don't like about it, if anything: the laundry isn’t ideal, but once you’re used to it it becomes a routine.
    • Is there a [diaper/accessory] you don't have but are considering? Why?: a diaper sprayer? Maybe? My first always had poops that would just fall into the toilet. My second’s poops require a bit more work to get it off. It’s not the biggest deal but a sprayer would be easier for sure.
    • Additional thoughts on [diaper/accessory]: I’ve never been brand loyal on cloth which saved me a ton of money upfront. I got free hand me downs from a friend, got some on Facebook marketplace, and bought a few new. They all work fine as long as you check the quality of the used ones. Playing with number of inserts, etc helps lots too. For us, microfibre inserts never worked well so we now just stick to charcoal bamboo with no issues! If you can find someone getting rid of a couple brands with different insert options it allows for some trial and error so you don’t spend a lot of money on something that might not work great for you.
  • One vote for Hello Bello.
they’re super cute and the scheduled delivery is more convenient than I’d thought.

hellobello.com subscription service or you can buy from Walmart online but the selection isn’t as good.
  • I've always been a Pampers person, but honestly I'm pretty easy, any disposable diaper will do! I usually buy whats on sale and if I'm at Costco ill grab Kirkland.

I did find Pampers better if you happen to have a very tiny/scrawny baby and Huggies was better for my chubby, "thick thighs" second born  :p just my experience.
  • I like different diapers depending on stage.  I like Huggies little snugglers when they are between sizes.  They we on the small size for dd so it was great when starting a new size to do those for a week or so.  I like the basic target brand diapers and I also used Luvs once she was older.  I could buy the big packs at Sam's Club.
Wipes I like target unscented or huggies natural care.  I disliked pampers wipes.  They always felt greasy to me.

  • @Aerialmrs have you ever used little fanny pants? They’re having a sale and I’m debating 😅
  • @whatabout2ndbreakfast No, I've never heard of them, but I just googled and they look good! The inserts are natural fibers which are my jam!
  • @Aerialmrs I think I’m going to pick up a grab bag 😂 almost all of our cloth are bigger best bottom since we started a little later with DS2.
  • @whatabout2ndbreakfast @aerialmrs I second the natural fibres for inserts! Microfibre just starts to stink after a while (and can be irritating to some little bums). I’ve had the best luck with bamboo/charcoal bamboo inserts.
