Leaking milk into funnel while pumping

I’ve been struggling finding the right funnel size for pumping. Apparently my nipples are smaller than the general size. 25mm and 21mm funnels were too big because they hurt pretty bad and I also was losing milk by leaking into the funnel.
I’m using a 19mm funnel and it’s less painful, but I’m still leaking out. Why does that happen?? I’m struggling with my supply anyway, so to lose milk while pumping is very frustrating.
Any ideas? Is the funnel still too big since I’m still leaking? Or does that just something that happens....

Re: Leaking milk into funnel while pumping

  • What do you mean you are leaking into the funnel? It’s supposed to go into the funnel. Do you mean around the funnel/flange and like onto your shirt/bra?

    -what pump are you using?
-what pumping bra are you using?
-are all the pieces and connections tight?

I’d suggest talking with a lactation consultant. They can help with pump fittings. Make sure your pump is set up properly according to the manufacturer. I’d also suggest legendairymilk on IG, not for the products they sell, but because they are an amazing source of information.

Final unprofessional opinion: it sounds like you’re not getting enough suction to keep the flanges on either because of the flange shape/size or because your pumping bra is too loose.

  • Have you considered using a hakka pump before using your electric pump? It helped me from leaking during feedings and save unused milk. I also had issues with supply, so capturing every drop was very important to me!
