I am borderline desperate to do all of the fun things again (the desire to go to Disney World and to a beach is particularly strong today) but would also like to not feel terrified by all the people or by how many people are very cavalier about COVID. We could probably do all these things safely if we could all get on board but nooooo

Oh, I have one. We saw a house over the weekend that was almost perfect. Perfect floorplan, great yard, great town, everything. We started loan paperwork and were prepared to maybe make an offer today. Last night I started really looking closely at the listing... NO AIR CONDITIONING. No central air system at all. We knew the house had radiant heating, which is great...no ducts to even install AC after we buy it. We live in CALIFORNIA, where we now have a fire season. I mean, the house is set up well to have nice cross breezes, ceiling fans, etc, and I'm not the biggest fan of AC to begin with (I'm always cold), but what happens when we're in fire season and we can't open our windows or doors at all for days on end? We just bake inside the house? Run away? I'm SO BUMMED.

I know it's a tough one, and it sounds like a beautiful house. There are small air conditioners you can get with vent hoses you can stick out of a window (and then allow you to seal the window), but depending on how big the house is, this might not help in Cali fire season

Mitsubishi makes nice sleek wall AC units. We actually had these at one of the offices I worked in and it was way better optimized than the central system at the other fancy new office lol @Lisa3379

@BusinessWife @chgilmore yeah, we’re going over there now and bringing a contractor friend to get his take on the situation. I feel like we would need quite a few of those wall units. Ugh. At least it has a pool with no heating, that’s probably how the current owners keep cool - just live in the ice cold pool 😂

@Lisa3379 i'm on the east coast, but in an old community where houses were not built with AC... minisplits are pretty great. i dont know if they would be an issue with wildfire, but something worth looking at maybe?

@Lisa3379 Second-ing the plug for ductless AC (sometimes called "minisplits" or "mini-city splits", not sure why). We got them for both heat and AC because we live in a very old house that has no ductwork. They are not cute, but they can be pretty unnoticeable if you have a good place to put them. I never notice ours, and they work really well for very efficient heating and cooling. It might be worth having a contractor or an HVAC guy look at the house if you really love it?

Yeah, it's just not going to work. We had a contractor friend come by the place to see it, and he was like, yeah, even doing the mini splits right would be at least 100K. A 2017 remodel with no AC. So weird. If only we could take the house and plop it down in Vancouver or something.

@Lisa3379 sadly this is a problem for many houses in the Bay area since the fire danger has been increasing in the last few years; I bet that even in 2017 when the remodel was happening they weren't thinking it could get as bad as it did in 2020. Our place (rental) doesn't have A/C and having fire season & heat waves coincide on several occasions last year was BRUTAL.

@Lisa3379 houses without ac in California should basically be illegal.
