GTKY Monday 3.8

Did you watch Oprah’s interview with Prince Harry & Meghan? Thoughts?

Hooooo yes, yes I did, and I am about to watch the unaired extras from this morning's live segment.

Some thoughts: wow Meg and Oprah are gorgeous, and THE AUDACITY of the monarchy to have these conversations NOT WITH MEG but with Harry (let alone to have them AT ALL). You can tell when you watch, too, that Meghan has to be more poised and controlled with what she says (like how she has refused to name names or go into a whole lot of detail) since she's clearly considered an outsider still while Harry can be a lot more open and candid about some details.

This. I don't care about the Royals AT ALL but goodness if that wasn't a masterclass in interviewing. I always liked Harry and Meghan but my respect for them skyrocketed.
  • @fifilala516 agreed - I don't keep tabs on Royal stuff either really (I've tuned into the weddings and skim headlines but that's about it) but the interview was so well done, definitely a lot of respect for them!
  • Alas, I didn't watch it. There's too much Royal talk all around, and honestly... why does it have to be Royals in order for the world to pay attention?! This stuff is happening ALL AROUND US! And guess what, it'll soon be forgotten.

I got my fix of royals by watching Coming 2 America (sequel to 1988 Coming To America; which I also watched on Saturday.) Obviously the original was much better; the sequel was funny because of all the SNL characters.

  • @acleverusername I've heard mixed reviews of that movie but maybe I'll watch for the SNL folks.
You're right, it shouldn't take it happening to Royals for it to be a conversation, but hopefully this will have more impact especially after the summer of BLM protests and other activism energy. After Diana's interview, more funding and awareness was provided surrounding mental health, self-harm, and eating disorders, so a similar thing may happen here with what they've brought up as well.

I started to but I fell asleep! I recorded it though. It's interesting because I watch The Crown on Netflix and what they were saying in the interview definitely matches with what they portray on the show (even though it's fiction).
  • i was/am fascinated by it all. i think one of the best moments for maybe people thinking oh she asked for this by stepping into this family, is in the additional clips when she says something to the effect of "being rude and racist are not the same thing"
  • I watched it last night. I haven’t seen any of the extra footage yet (work is getting in the way, haha). I thought the interview was devastating and damning. It’s very easy to see there’s a pattern based on what Princess Diana went through, the interview Diana gave, and the phone calls that were secretly recorded where she was confessing to her friend how absolutely depressed and badly treated she was. It’s a shame this has all been allowed to continue for so long. And the race stuff constantly aimed at Meghan! It’s shameful that the tabloids were allowed to be so blatantly racist against Meghan. Just absolutely critical of every step she took, but praising the exact same steps when they were taken by her SIL Kate. The thing that really got me was that the tabloids have holiday parties hosted at the palace! What?!?!?
  • @keikilove it's so maddening that these systemic issues have continued to persist. the line that stuck with me was "they rely on the tabloids to justify their existence" - of course they're going to host their parties and not say anything about stories that generate major coverage, because it all supports them remaining in charge of this institution, because that's what matters: the institution, not the family and not individuals within the family.
  • I didn't watch, and I don't plan to. 🤷
