Product Spotlight 12/01: Diapering

Hi all! It may seem early to start making particular plans about how to deal with baby diapering, but we have a lot of baby topics to cover in the next 7ish months and we want to give each topic its space so... DIAPERING!

Those of you who went the disposable path, do you have any favourite brands? Those of you who went the cloth diapering path, do you have any favourite brands, methods, techniques? Tips on diaper washing if using cloth?

What are people's favorite wipes? How do you store wipes, and do you use a wipe-warmer? What do you stock in case of diaper rash?

How do you dispose of dirty diapers: do you have a favorite diaper pail? A service that comes to pick up cloth diapers?

And how about your diapering set-up at home: do you have cute diaper caddies you want to recommend or are you comfortable throwing a towel on any surface? Diapering set-up on the road: what do you stash in your diaper bag specifically for diapering purposes?

Or does all of this give you a headache and you prefer to go back to our roots and let your children run naked in the woods and practice free elimination? Ok but seriously - has anyone tried EC?

Re: Product Spotlight 12/01: Diapering

  • I went the cloth diaper route and I could not be happier about our decision.

I only use Canadian brands for most things but they can also be ordered elsewhere. Motherease are the diapers and they are AMAZING. Never any leaks. We use lilhelpers for overnight diapers and my kiddo goes from 7 PM to 8 AM without a diaper change. I need to grab some new prints for the Motherease.

There are many cloth diapering styles but AI2 was my favourite. It feels like a regular diaper but much better. Disposables always gave my kiddo a rash. We use the Ubbi diaper pail with a cloth liner. Wash every 2nd night and hang to dry. In the morning, they're all dry and ready to be put away.

For diaper cream, it's Canadian but Lovefresh Baby Bottom Butter. It's the best one I tried and I tried a bunch.

For wipes, I like water wipes. I find the Pampers wipes to be too wet. I had bought a box of them and gladly switched back to Water Wipes when it finished.

I do disposable and went with Pampers swaddlers and now cruisers. I’m afraid of trying something else now 🙈

Wipes: Water Wipes are the absolute best for us. LO has super sensitive skin and these were perfect.

Wipe holder: I went with the OXO Perfect Pull. Loved it so much that I bought a second. Didn’t do a warmer.

Pail: Ubbi. It doesn’t need special bags and has a lock for curious little fingers. It gets really heavy when it’s full. I loved it so much I bought a second...Late night postpartum purchases 🤷🏻‍♀️

Changing Pad: Keekaroo Peanut Changing Pad. I LOOOVE this thing. It’s wipes clean super easily and is just perfect. I typically put a receiving blanket down on it bc the surface can get chilly.

On-the-go-changing: Skip Hop Pronto. Entire little changing station. It’s great. I also throw little doggie waste bags in to wrap the dirty diaper.

We haven’t had many issues with diaper rash but have used Triple Paste.

Also - we didn’t get a changing table and used a desk we had from the guest room. Worked out just fine. We have one of those 3tier rolling caddies.
  • We did disposable with DD. Huggies fit her best.

I am debating doing cloth for DS if I am still WFH. I did cloth with my little brothers, but that was 20 years ago. So what brands should I check out? Is buying used okay? Just thinking it is going to be for only 1 kid so don’t want to invest a ton, just save some landfill space.

I didn’t love the water wipes, but worth trying. I usually just grabbed the Costco ones or whichever was on sale that month. Costco diapers are the Huggies just not branded, so good way to save $$.

DD didn’t like cold wipes and it was chilly since she was a Feb baby, but we never got around to buying a wipe warmer. I have it on the list for this time around since the list is much shorter.

We have the munchkin diaper pail, don’t recommend. The Ubbi was brand new when we had DD, and I regret not getting it. I even looked into selling the munchkin and buying the Ubbi but apparently the resale value on diaper pails is horrible. Buy a used one if you can, so much cheaper!

I have a grey multi-pocket caddy (on Amazon) that we used for diapers downstairs. It was super helpful to have something that can easily be moved/restocked as DD got older. I also had a caddy that hung on the pack n play, but I think we put away the pack n play around 6 months.

Our diaper bag came with a changing pad, it is helpful to have one for public bathrooms or for the back of the car changes. I recommend tossing in a bag for putting dirty clothes in too, in case of blowouts.

We had a changing table in DD bedroom, I liked it because I couldn’t bend over well for the first few months, so it raised her up higher for me.
  • We’re simple.
Huggies diapers (because Costco sells them and I didn’t like Kirkland) and we use Kirkland wipes.
We’ve been buying diapers now for over 4 years and there’s no end in sight.

My first I used a change table in his room and I had another in the basement (where I spent most of my days with him)
my second we used a change table in her room and then changed here wherever else needed.

We also use 2 diaper genies. One in the room and the other on the main floor bathroom so I’m not throwing poop in the garbage because it stinks.
  • We use Pampers Swaddles. We were very happy. The only time we got leaks was when DS was ready to move up to a bigger size. I would highly recommend signing up for Amazon Mom, especially if you have prime. You get a discount on diapers, I think 20% and they are delivered monthly. We figured out what size box of diapers we needed, and they were delivered monthly to our door.

We used pampers sensitive skin wipes because I could get them from Amazon with the diapers. Will probably do so again.

We have a munchkin diaper pail from DS, so we will probably use it again, but I would definitely suggest FTM looking into a pail that uses regular trash bags.

Our diaper bag had a changing pad which was clutch for changing when the place you were didn't have a changing table (like the trunk of the car). We had a spare that we used for downstairs changes. After the first few weeks of being home when stairs were hard and DS was having the most diapers, I usually took DS to the changing table in his room, just easier to be on the changer, especially once he could move and try to get away during changing.

  • Brand - Pampers Swaddlers anything else gives DD rashes and yeast infections.

Wipes- I loved the pampers sensitive until the pandemic hit and I couldn’t find them. I ended up buying the Up and Up sensitive ones at Target and love them.

We have the Ubbi diaper pail and I love it! I’m so glad we went with one that uses regular trash bags. I also get these little charcoal packs from Amazon that I put in there on the little “arm” that holds the bag and it helps absorb smells so when you open the pail and there are many stinky diapers in not so much stink escapes.

we have a changing table in DDs room and will have one in the nursery too. At night while rooming in with us I changed DD on my bed just with a changing pad down and then if we are other places in the home I would just change her on the floor or couch. I had a little diaper caddy in my room and one in our playroom so I didn’t always have to go to her room.

I also purchase the arm and hammer diaper disposal bags for our diaper bags. This way I can put soiled clothes or dirty diapers in them when we are out and about. Helps not stink up someone else’s trash.
  • Brand: seventh generation diapers and wipes. They were the only ones we tried that did not cause DS diaper rash. I liked the water wipes too but sometimes they were too wet, especially towards the end of the package.

Diaper rash cream: when he did have a rash, we used either aquaphor or bert's bees rash cream. And sometimes both.

Diaper bag: we used my day pack backpack as a diaper bag. It was perfect as we could still have two arms available. Pockets on the side for snacks. DS now uses it for school. I also repurposed the crib sheet holders for an emergency kit which held two diapers and 10 wipes. I kept that in my car so if I ever forgot diapers or if I used more than I brought, I always had a spare. It was also helpful when I actually remembered to fill after I used it.

Dog bags were definitely used when out and stinky diapers to dispose of.

Diaper pail - never had one. Never felt the need. Same with the wipe warmer; we didn't have one.

Changing table - we had two. One connected to the crib and then we had a pack and play in our main floor that also had a changing table with it. Super helpful to have two. As DS aged, we eventually changed him on the floor wherever we were.

Diapers and Wipes: Target Up&Up are AMAZING and I'll never go back to anything else (barring skin sensitivity to the brand)
Pail: I have a diaper genie and love it.
On the go changing: Arm & Hammer bags and Skip Hop portable changing pad
Rash Cream: Maximum strength Boudreaux's Butt Paste

  • I’ve always used pampers swaddlers for the first year or so with my three boys, then I switch to target up & up after that - much cheaper and they work great! I hear Huggies work best for girls (or so my friends have said) - this baby is my first girl but I love pampers so much that I’ll prob at least try to use those first.

Huggies natural wipes are by far my favorite wipes, they are perfect with no gross scent and no weird residue. Absolute perfection in a baby wipe.

I really like the diaper dekor plus diaper pail. Bags are a bit expensive but they do last a while (well, maybe not a first, ha!). But it’s the best odor controlling one that I have used.

  • I use be disposables and cloth. We usually do cloth during the day and disposables at night and sometimes at nap time or if we are going for a long car ride.

    Favorite brands:
    Disposable- Seventh Generation
Cloth- I like all-in-ones or all-in-twos, I do have some pockets and some hybrids too. I have a mix of blueberry simplex, smart bottoms smart one 3.1, grovia hybrid with organic cotton soaker pads, thirstiest natural, bumgenius freetime, nora’s nursery, and then some random pockets I got from Etsy. My favorites are blueberrys or smart bottoms.

    Favorite wipes?
    Water wipes

How do you store wipes, and do you use a wipe-warmer?
    No wipe warmer

What do you stock in case of diaper rash?
Earth mama organic diaper balm (cloth safe)

How do you dispose of dirty diapers:
    Disposables- regular trash
Cloth- Ubbi diaper pail with planet wise large diaper pail liner

    Diapering set-up at home:
We change DD’s diapers in her room. Bumbo changing pad on DD’s dresser. Disposables and wipes sit on top of dresser, cloth is in top 2 drawers.

Here is my set up, I have more cloth now though.

    Diapering set-up on the road:
One of my friends got me a coach diaper bag for my a baby shower, it came with a changing pad in it. I keep grocery bars in the side pocket for dirty diapers changed in the car.

  • I use cloth and disposables.

cloth brands: blueberry is where I started but they didn’t hold up well because we have hard water and thus a rough wash routine, so now we also are very well stocked in sloomb fitteds with wool covers. I am absolutely obsessed with sloomb wool, I do not recommend this obsession to anyone! It’s crazy but it makes me so happy.

Anyways 😅 our newborn stash is all prefolds with covers. If you exclusively breastfed you don’t need to spray your diapers so during that time we also use cloth wipes. I also have an amazing spraying situation if anyone is interested. I’m happy to answer any CDing questions really.

disposable products: we’ve always used pampers diapers and I really like honest wipes.

I also recommend the keekaroo pad. We have two! I also really want an oxo wipe dispenser because I’ve heard rave reviews. I still have a kid in diapers so I should really just get it.

  • We use Parent's Choice. My girls manage to blow out no matter what brand or size I used, so I decided if I'm going to be cleaning up the mess, I might as well go cheap.

Wipes: We use Pampers wipes because we can always find huge packs of them on Amazon for pretty cheap. I like the wetness and thickness of them. Huggies wipes smell weird to me for some reason.

Diaper pail: Yes! I'm not even sure what brand I have, but it's a must. Do not skip over this item like all the minimalist lists say. We didn't buy it with my first until about a week after she was born. The smell was too much for DH.

Changing table: We used a small dresser and strapped a changing pad on that. I have a diaper caddy next too it with wipes, butt cream, and diapers.
  • I totally forgot to mention the butt cream that I love! Seriously I love this stuff so much I buy it for every baby shower I attend. Safe for cloth diapering too! A vendor gifted it to me with DD, homemade from a crunchy mama.

  • @ramzlau just bought 2 of the 2oz tins. Thanks!

we diaper and just use whatever’s least expensive at Sam’s club, which is usually buggies.

    I prefer pampers for newborn.

For Black Friday I ordered 2 diaper boxes from
hello bello and 1 from honest due to their discount. Canceled my subscription. I have gotten boxes every Black Friday I was diapering 😂 I like their diapers. The designs are cute, but ultimately they’re things that are pooped in so doesn’t matter as long as it holds the mess in and doesn’t cause my kids any issues.

I wish I was a cloth diaperer. It aligns with my personal beliefs about the environment, but the hubs 100% vetoed and he was the stay at home parent for our older 2.

We have a dresser that is a changing table and essentially solely used it for our first. For our second we essentially did the same. For this one we have a larger home, so will likely have a small changing caddy downstairs and the changing table upstairs.

Had a wipe warmer with the first 2. It’s unnecessary but they seemed to like it.

Diaper pail is essential. And don’t cheap out and not use their bags. It ends up stinking a lot.

Diapering trick: put the new clean diaper under the dirty diaper and swipe out the dirty. That way less risk for accidents on undiapered bums.

Also, after having my son, I realized every man alive has peed on his face at least once in their lives 😂
  • @angelz429 peed on his face 🤣🤣 oh the things to look forward to with a boy!
  • @angelz429 yes to the pee on the face!! And mine too 😂😭

I think I have an unpopular opinion here- we haven't had a diaper pail with our kids and I don't think it's necessary for some situations. We used plastic shopping bags that we have 8 million of, and just wrapped the diapers in that. Smelly diapers always went out on the porch or straight to the outside trash after being taken off, and pee diapers that didn't stink just hung out in the bag until we changed a stinky diaper 40 minutes later.

We have a small split level and the front door is literally steps from the nursery. Our trash also gets collected 2x/week. If we had a bigger house with less frequent trash pick up I *might* reconsider, but we've always just wanted the stink out of the house asap.
  • @_orchid_ We have a diaper pail and are in disposables right now but we aren’t using it. We just walk the diaper into the kitchen and throw it away. Probably wouldn’t be the most convenient with a newborn but it’s working for toddler diapering at the moment.

  • Has anyone tried Earth + Eden Baby Diapers?? I was on amazon checking out how to set up a diaper subscription (better than doing it sleep deprived with a new baby) and they offer 20% off if you subscribe to Earth + Eden Baby Diapers. It makes this brand cheaper than the Pamper Swaddlers I used with DS.

Budget me is wondering if they are worth a try, lazy me is thinking I would miss the green indicator line that baby is wet...

  • I like that those go up to size 7.  I’m always iffy on trying new brands but that subscribe and save price is nice lol
  • Re diaper pail: We decided to go the minimalist route and not get a diaper pail for DD1. We Amazoned one after about 3 days at home? DH could just not take the smell of diapers in the kitchen trash and I wasn't about to walk every one of them out to the trash after a c-section.
  • @marebear15 we didn’t have a diaper pail with DS but we already bought one for DS2.  I hated the smell of poop diapers left in a regular trash for days (especially when it was 3-4 poops per day in a trash can that only got changed every 4-5 days) but I dealt with it, this time I’m not doing it lol.

Random question: I'd planned to just use the top of the dresser as a changing table, rather than having it separate. Do I need to get a topper (the wood frame) or am I ok just putting the pad down right on the dresser?

Another one: are they ok with something like a Bumbo? Is it comfortable enough? I've only ever seen the foam/fabric ones, but this seems so much easier to clean/disinfect
  • @akoros I have the bumbo changing pad that I put on top of the dresser.
