  • Olives are gross. There, I said it.

  • @fameonmain2 I partially agree. Green olives are gross. Black olives are *chefs kiss*

LOTR is a terrible book. So hard to get through 😴 I read The Hobbit and struggled and then moved on to fellowship and his intro thing (I’m blanking on what they’re called) even said that he was going to write a book just to see how long he could make it and see if people were still interested. I managed to finish and gave up halfway through two towers. Only seen the first movie which was meh so can’t comment on the movies

  • Agree that black olives are 👌. But they have to be on something like pizza or nachos.  I also dislike green olives, but I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time I actually had one
  • All olives are gross

I love me some Andes mints, but peppermint does not belong in hot chocolate. Fight me.

  • @fameonmain2 I'm with you! No thank you!
@inthewoods23 I'm not sure I've tried it. Now I'm bummed I don't have any Andes at home to try it. It's freezing rain right now and I think it would be good timing!

  • @jackie_dunny aw man, love LOTR! I read the books in quarantine. And love the movies.

@inthewoods23 Love andes. Peppermint patties... vom.
  • @fameonmain2 peppermint patties used to be a big favorite of mine as a kid! There's just something about peppermint flavor in hot chocolate that makes it gross for me. I think the chocolate flavor just isn't strong enough in comparison to the peppermint. Maybe a richer chocolate? But mint chocolate chip ice cream is my absolute favorite ice cream! So I definitely can't say I hate the combo of mint and chocolate.

  • Oh man! All the dislike of olives 🫒. I love olives...green, black, kalamata...you name if. And a dirty martini is my favorite 🍸.

UO: Parks & Rec is better than The Office.
  • @sienna221 SO MUCH BETTER! DH and I are so divided on this 😂
  • @sienna221 yessssss!! P&R is infinitely superior!! I enjoyed the Office but I loved P&R (and B99!).
  • OK so:

Agree- Olives are Gross (ALL olives)
Disagree-I like mint in my hot cocoa, but I ONLY like my hot cocoa if it's a darker/richer chocolate AND is made with MILK (not water. yuck)  But really in my case, Lactaid since I have issues with milk.
Agree-The Hobbit is awful.  LOTR is slightly better in comparison.  The movies are better still.
I can't weigh in on the Parks&Recs thing, cause I've never seen it.  :disappointed:   Did see some of The Office and wasn't thrilled by it, so I've not seen more than a handful of episodes.

My UO as per The Hobbit:  STOP saying "here's a song I wrote" and write out words.  NO... You didn't write a song, you wrote a f*cking POEM.  If it were a SONG, you would have included THE MUSICAL NOTES.

  • @stormageddon-darklordofall I don't know the context of your UO but as a music teacher, I wholeheartedly agree!!
  • @gingermama29 JRR Tolkien has a “song” about every 3 sentences in LOTR and it’s literally just a poem that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense lol

    @stormageddon-darklordofall when I told
my brother I was struggling to get through the books (he loves them) he was like just skip the songs, they don’t add to the story anyway and it’s not like you can sing them in your head

  • Ok, I'm going to get pretty spicy here talking about the covid vaccine.

I am really sick and tired of all the articles and news about people who aren't in healthcare, over 65 etc getting the vaccine way before they "should" be. I know there's the argument that these people are taking away from the communities that have been hit harder by the virus and that is a very valid point and definitely needs to be improved, however, it seems like people are just looking for someone to blame for the poor distribution and coordination with getting people vaccinated. I mean the polio vaccine had the entire country immunized in a matter of like a month or something right? My local NBA team's CEO got the vaccine recently (a middle aged white guy) which of course had people up in arms because any CEO getting the vaccine early apparently immediately leads people to believe he paid somebody big bucks to cut in line, but the thing is, he has a relative (a brother?) in healthcare and was offered the vaccine as it would have otherwise gone to waste. Why are people so upset over that?? It just irritates me so much. If you are offered the vaccine that would otherwise go to waste just freaking take it and don't feel guilty because the pandemic isn't going to end any faster by insisting on waiting.

  • @inthewoods23 I’m annoyed by the people getting the vaccine early… but I definitely don’t blame them for the lack of vaccines available. I also don’t blame them for wanting to get it as soon as possible. I’m more mad at the system for not having this more streamlined. We had how long to get ready for this moment!? Both my 90 year old grandma’s still haven’t gotten their shots (one is getting one this afternoon, finally!). But I know several of my friends in their 30s, with no underlying health risks, and no contact with the public, have gotten their shots already. It’s just frustrating.

(Also, I hate most CEOs to begin with but why didn’t that CEO offer the shot to someone else? I’m sure he could have found someone easily! I get it if he was right there and they were like, well we have to use this in the next 5 minutes or else we have to throw it away… but I doubt that’s what happened. Obviously I don’t know what truly happened, and again, I don’t blame him for getting the shot, but the system is broken for sure)

  • @inthewoods23 yeah I'm more annoyed at the rollout I guess. I just don't understand how you didn't survey your people to see who was going to get, had backups lined up, etc. But I'm super annoyed at how the hospitals have done it in my state at least. Instead of giving it to essential workers, they gave it to everyone working for them, even those employees who had been and would continue to be working from home. It just seems to me that those would have been better given to frontline workers (not even teachers like me per se, but grocery store workers, retail, convenience store workers, etc. And of course me too. It never ceases to amaze me how gatherings are limited but putting 30 students in a classroom is totally ok.
  • @LJMoon6 right! The system and process we have isn't working and it sucks. I can forgive those who had it offered to them, but anyone gaming the system (paying) to get it early needs to get slapped.

And yeah, I don't know the full story with the CEO. I've given up on actually reading articles because I just get irritated reading these stories with the state of the country right now. Of course by not reading the article I'm only going off what is stated in the title which I know are often misleading. As far as I can tell, it was offered to him and he took it. Also being that it's the NBA, I know their season starts pretty soon right? Or is currently happening right now? So it's in a way helpful that he got his 1st shot?

Things get even trickier since there's 2 shots. How many people could at least get some immunity from 1 shot instead of getting people on the schedule for the 2nd shot. I don't know if that would make things any better and therefore result in less people being angry over who gets the 1st shot sooner than others in their "group".

  • @inthewoods23 yes - the 2nd shot makes it so tricky. I know that's one of the things that's apparently slowing down the roll out here -- our governor decided that we would reserve second doses for all of those getting their first dose.

@inthewoods23 and @fameonmain2 If you wanna read something really infuriating about vaccine rollouts, read about how Philadelphia PA decided to do their rollout.  (Philly Fighting Covid) and all the drama that has ensued from that.  It's ludicrous!

ETA: as someone who works for the govt... this rollout doesn't surprise me.  Standard govt project...

Oh boy, spicy spicy UO Thursday!
I will take everyone's olives. I traveled to Portugal in 2014 (most memorable trip for me) and olives are a standard hors-d'oeuvre there and I was IN LOOOOOOOVE!

Can't comment on the peppermint (don't love peppermint to start with; and and I don't drink hot chocolate all that often) or LOTR or Hobbit as I didn't read those books.

Regarding vaccine, I agree the issue at hand is the roll-out. Also, I don't believe we should shame ppl who get the vaccine because otherwise it would have gone to waste. I'm also kind of impressed with "vaccine chasers" -- if I wasn't working, I'd probably try and do that. That might be my UO.

  • @inthewoods23 I actually think one country is doing that (giving everyone the first vaccine right away)... maybe it's the UK? I think they're idea is that if everyone can get the first dose right away, then everyone will have at least some protection. Then 3 months later, after everyone has gotten their first dose, they'll start giving the second. Thought that was an interesting approach.

@Lisa3379 Oh man. That is a big one. Hate politics with a passion!!!!

  • Our local health system offered the vaccine to all of their employees, including the WFH ones. People are pretty mad about it. I’m sure there are employees that would have been willing to wait but they didn’t get that option. It was either get it by X date or you’re on your own. So people don’t know if they will have to wait a month or 6 months to get another chance. I think the fear of having to wait until August is what is driving people to “jump in line”

Although I do agree that people finding ways to get it when they aren’t actually eligible is kind of disappointing.

  • @LJMoon6 hmm don’t think it’s the UK. At least not to my knowledge. Could definitely be wrong though 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • @LJMoon6 I wonder what Sweden's plan is since they opted to just let everyone get infected and didn't implement any lockdowns last year :D ok I shouldn't be chuckling about that but you know. I would be curious to know if there's less hostility in the process if the plan was "no seconds until everyone has had their first helping"

@bows22 yeah that's a tough call. WFH you are way low on risk, but the unknown of the next opportunity to get it if passed up now would definitely have me getting it while I can.

I've also been questioning the whole idea of having large locations set up for mass vaccinations. Like.... isn't that risky to have a big hub for people to go to for their vaccine? Is that going to cause more spread? Guess it would depend on how well people social distance while waiting in line.

  • @bows22 and @inthewoods23 Yeah, my job entitles me to get the vaccine earlier than my husband, even though I'm currently 100% remote working and he's physically going in every day.  Ugh.  It's a complete mess.  Debating whether I'll get it as soon as I can, or if I will wait so that there are more vaccines available to those who need it more (elderly, immune-compromised, etc.).  But I'm still nowhere near the top of the list, so at this point I'm just waiting to see what happens, and decide closer to 'my time.'

  • I used to hate olives, but now I love them. Same goes for mustard. UO Food Edition: I don't like blueberries. Of course they are like, the best fruit you can eat in terms of overall physical health, but blech. Can't do it. Give me any other berry, though. I also loooove grapefruit.

UO TV edition: I don't think "The Office" is funny, like, at all. Same goes with "Friends."

UO Vaccine: I kept vacillating on if I was going to get the vaccine because of TTC, but after talking to multiple healthcare workers and doing some reading, I decided I will get it when it becomes available to me. NY is doing an awful job so far, I think - but thank goodness my parents and in-laws were able to get their first dose, and have their second one scheduled.
  • Love all the action on UO today!

@lisa3379 love political news though DH is way more up to date on it than me.

@acleverusername love that you love Portugal!! I am Portuguese by heritage. We go almost every year (our trip last august got cancelled).

@stormageddon-darklordofall um, whoa on philly. I only read an article briefly but I am so falling into that black hole tonight. “Yeah let’s go with the person with little or no experience on these things TO RUN LARGE SCALE VACCINATIONS”

@fifilala516 I also don’t find the office funny. But friends I laugh every time!!! Though a lot of those jokes would not go over well today (rightly so)
  • @fameonmain2 Same! Don't like the office but love Friends.

@jackie_dunny I could have sworn it was the UK, but now of course I can't find the article I read lol.

  • @LJMoon6 I think you might be right that it's the UK. I get these daily bits of news emails during the week. Here's a short excerpt that talks about the AstraZeneca vaccine helps slow the transmission:

"Officials said the results justify the UK's decision to delay the second dose for many recipients by up to 12 weeks. With limited vaccine supplies, the strategy is meant to provide initial benefits to a greater number of people in the hopes early immunity will blunt the spread of the virus."

  • @inthewoods23 @LJMoon6 to my knowledge, the only people available to get the vaccine are immuno-compromised, over 80s, people living in care homes, and care staff/hospital staff. Second dose or not. They have it broken down into groups like that. Only people in those groups can get it

  • Don’t want to open it back up but I’m terrible at explaining things 😂 what I meant yesterday was: when the UK is saying things like “were delaying the second dose so more people can get the first” they don’t mean so the general population can get a first dose, they mean so more people in the above mentioned groups can get a first dose before a second. I hope I’m making sense lol I DO believe they’re adding two more groups soon (over 70s and I forget the other one) but yeah, still only just those groups lol
