Diaper recommendations?

I would love some diaper suggestions, my daughter is 8 1/2 so I don't know about any of the new brands like Hello Bello or Honest. Has anyone tried them? We were a Huggies family back in the day. So I'm debating on whether to just stock up on Huggies from Costco or try something new.

Re: Diaper recommendations?

  • For disposable diapers we really like Pampers Swaddlers. We mostly did cloth and used Flip hybrids.

  • You will probably have to try multiple brands. My 8yo peed out the top of Huggies, so we went with Pampers. However, my 10mo pooped put the BACK of Pampers, and we use Huggies. My now 24yo did best with Luvs, but that was a VERY long time ago.
  • We are a pampers swaddles family until the LO gets pretty big and nears potty training..then we move to pampers cruisers 360 fit.
  • I used pampers swaddlers until DS started blowing them out literally every single time he pooped. I got a bunch of brands to try from Diaper Dabbler and liked Huggies Little Movers best. He's still in them, but we're transitioning to pull ups now in prep for potty training.

  • Pampers are my fav, but we use Target brand due to them being so cost efficient and still really good quality (in our opinion).
  • Oh man babies are so different! My first was a huggies baby all the way (we tried huggies, pampers, and honest) and my second has always been an honest baby. They were both 20" at birth but my second, born 6 days further along in gestational age, was 1lb 5oz *smaller* (yes, she was later AND smaller which is not normal for second babies) so has always been a bit lower on the BMI percentiles. I love that we get so many little sample packs and such from various things (which reminds me I need to sign up for some welcome boxes from various places) to try them out. Usually you can return unopened boxes if you end up having stocked up on a brand that doesn't work for you (although I've never done this and I don't know if covid changes anything with returns but I imagine it doesn't).

  • So both of my boys we started with pampers because their preemie sizes were the best fit (I’ve just always had little babes!) with DS1 I had stayed home and we did mostly cloth actually and had GroVia with snap inserts, but used mostly pampers for nights or traveling out. With DS2 I went back to work at 6 weeks and had no time for washing cloth (we tried!) and I use cloud island from target or pampers if I’m elsewhere. I think it’s pretty comparable. We tried hello bello brand and he broke out bad with diaper rash. I also like the cloud island wipes because my skin is sensitive, so using huggies brand and most generics repeatedly makes my skin red and itchy. I personally was never that impressed with luvs brand because they didn’t fit as snuggly and leaked too much for me.
  • We use hello bello with their subscription and like them. Honestly like them for their prints lol. If I'm changing diapers multiple times a day on 2 kids it might as well be fun to look at! Have also used honest company and probably like them more, but they are a little more pricey. Others I've used and liked are pampers pure (usually use these for newborn) and for a more cost effective choice, cloud island brand at target.
  • My personal experience was whatever I had the most of, didn’t work. When he was a newborn we went through several different ones from my shower and pampers were my favorite, but by month 3ish they had blowouts consistently. Honest were a horrible fit too. Long term, Huggies were the only ones that didn’t have blowouts. This time I don’t plan on stocking up at all. Returns were a pita. I’ll probably start with pampers and huggies in newborn size and see which fits better before getting into the next sizes. I would say I want to love honest because they have the cutest designs, but they’re probably the lowest on my ratings from what we tried.
  • I think in all truthfulness, it’s best to try different brands and see what works for your babe. If baby has bigger and chunkier thighs and rolls, certain brands might work better than others. If your LO is a heavy wetter or not can affect it too. And also if you breastfeed or formula feed it can definitely affect it. DS1 was all breast milk and a heavy wetter. But DS2 we did a combo on breast milk and formula because my supply wasn’t as good, and he wasn’t as heavy of a wetter and had more issues with poop so not quite as smushed, more solids.
I really liked where we used to live I was in a baby and kid swap group on Facebook and there was no asking for money, but you could ask for a swap of other goods. So if you had a box of diapers (or anything baby and kid related) and the brand didn’t work or baby outgrew it, you could post it and ask for wipes or snacks as an exchange. It was awesome!
  • I just buy whatever is on sale and have not had any real issues, other than blow outs (especially in the newborn phase) but I think those just start happening when we need to size up.  I've tried:

    Kirkland (Costco)
    Aldi
    Luvs
    Pampers
    Huggies
    Hello Bello
    Honest
    Amazon (Mama Bear)
    Bambo
grocery store brands and rite aid brand

Honestly I haven't noticed much variation in how well they work as long as I get a big enough size.   I have noticed some variation in the sizing.  My son can still wear a size 4 Huggies but he needs a size 5 in Kirkland or Luvs.  We size up for nighttime too and just use whatever brand is on sale.  I was using pampers overnights for the first year or so but those are expensive!  We also have a stash of cloth diapers and did a cloth diapering for a time, but I had a heard time keeping up with it once we introduced solids.

  • We were big fans of Pampers Swaddlers for the newb stage for both girls. Neither of ours were sensitive to one type or another - I know some brands irritate some babies’ skin. After they got a bit older we’d start buying what was on sale, and we also tried some store brands (Sam’s, Aldi, and Walmart) and had good luck with all of those. If I remember right the Aldi ones were the cheapest and while they did their job, they didn’t mask the pee smell quite as well so we ended up going through those quicker.
  • Like everyone said, try a few, some gave my kids rashes. I find honest, hello bello, Amazon brand to all be really thin and non absorbent. The inside of the pampers pure is like mesh and weirdly stuck to baby’s skin and the tab on them sliced her leg. We’ve been using Huggies special delivery for most of her first year and she’s NEVER HAD A BLOW OUT or leak in her life. Not one. Knock on wood. We used luvs with my first and he used to have them all the time but we just thought it was part of life. Special Delivery are a little more expensive but I order a month supply at a time on subscribe and save on amazon and save 20 percent. Well worth it to never have to clean a poo-splosion.
  • @Serenamarr Blowout story: with DS2 we were traveling once to see family and on the way DS1 said he had to go pee so we said we could pull off the interstate at the next stop. By that time he was needing to go! So I told DH I would just hop out and take him in and let him get baby out and we could just grab lunch at the Subway attached to the gas station. Well I got DS1 taken care of and we were inside just waiting for him to bring baby inside but he was just standing there holding him. Went out to check and we had the most massive explosion. It was out the feet of the one piece he was wearing and the neck up into his hair. It was pure yellow mustard sticky breast milk poop. DH was trying hard to not puke and just froze not knowing what to do. So I awkwardly carried baby to the bathroom and used the baby nail clippers from the diaper bag to cut through the thicker parts of the outfit off and just ripped it and literally threw it away. I gave him a bath in the sink of this gas station in the middle of Indiana. There were no paper towels and the hand blower was scalding hot, so I used the extra burp cloths I had as towels to dry him off, and DH tried his best to clean the car seat and then we lined it with an extra blanket as best we could so the smell didn’t keep getting on him. Also the whole time this was happening a little old man sitting at a table drinking coffee just watched this entire event unfold and as we got in the car to leave he was laughing and waved us goodbye. I can’t say I blame him for finding the humor in it, but that memory will never leave!
  • @theletlers oh my god, that is one for the books!!!
  • @theletlers we adapt improvise and overcome 😂 a shining moment.

My first born was jaundiced and his first poop took a few days. It was the most stressful time of my life waiting for that kid to poop. When it finally came he was laying in the pnp and when I lifted him the entire back of him was covered top to bottom.. I held him up calling for dh to help which excited the dog who jumped up on the nearby rocker and then jumped INTO the pnp, all four paws in the poop. I yelled at him which made him jump back out onto the rocker then onto the rug leaving poop paw prints all along the way.. I’m wondering where dh is in all this when in he walks with our doula who just arrived for a lactation consult and there I am pantsless boob out dangling a poop covered baby surrounded by 💩 🐾  lol. Bless that woman she grabbed the baby from me and washed him in our sink.

A few months later he was on the changing table and blasted a jet stream of poop clear across the room about 5 feet to splatter paint the wall. Not a drop landed on the floor or anything else just a straight shot lol 😂
  • @Serenamarr the force behind baby poops is impressive!
That sounds like quite the situation for DH and the doula to walk into for sure!
  • I loved pampers pure when my son was a baby, especially since he was in it for longer stretches at night.. we still do those for nighttime but went to Costco diapers for during the day since we change it so much more often.
  • @thedomesticgeek echoing what everyone else has said, especially for the newborn stage - try a few!  Blowouts and messes are going to happen no matter the brand in the beginning, in my opinion.  I paid a premium for the Pampers pure in the newborn stage, but honestly wasn't super impressed (and HATED honest diapers!).  I felt the pampers pure stuck to DD's bottom like glue. We had good experiences with Huggies and regular Pampers. And once she hit a few months old - we started using Luv's because of the cost savings and haven't looked back - Love the Luv's!

One thing I will add to this discussion is to try the Overnight diapers when the baby starts sleeping through the night. Around 4 months DD started sleeping through the night and would pee through her diaper and we did a couple middle of the night sheet changes.  I had no idea Overnight diapers were even a thing until someone suggested I try them.  They are more absorbent and they really work!  DD is 20 months old now and we still use them. Actually just had to order some more on Amazon because she woke up with wet jammies this morning (we had run out)
  • We are a pampers swaddlers family for sure. I've tried other brands, and even other pamper diapers, but DD usually gets a rash, or now that she is older ends up with them hanging funny. So our plan is to go straight from swaddlers to pull-up/ potty training (starting soon!!!).
  • We did only swaddles with my first two and they were great. Then we did swaddles with my third until size 1 and then tried a box of Costco 1’s we were gifted. Haven’t used anything but Costco since then! We did try hello bello and it gave dd3 awful diaper rash. It is all so kid specific.
