Is it too late for UO? Oh well.

I hate all of the memes, tweets, etc. that say "teachers don't do it for the paycheck" or something to that effect. Um, I do it for the paycheck. That doesn't give anyone an excuse to underpay teachers or put them at risk.

@fameonmain2 Yes! Just because your job helps people or is altruistic in some way doesn’t mean you aren’t at least partially (or mostly...) in it for a paycheck. Student loans are real!

I have no idea if this is a UO.... but I think it should be completely acceptable for family member's Christmas gifts to total less than $100 a person. Even if your family isn't that large, it really sucks spending hundreds of dollars at the end of the year! Why can't I gift 1 or 2 moderately priced items that are on a wish list?

Yes I'll splurge on DH and any future LOs, but I don't want to do the same with siblings and their SOs and our parents.

@inthewoods23 my sister and her in-laws pick names and only get one gift each. Saves a lot or money and that way you can splurge on something more expensive for that 1 person. Sis has been trying to convince my parents to do that for a few years... but Dad won’t budge. 👎🏻

@inthewoods23 100% agree. My family has never done expensive Christmas presents, but MH's family usually does. A few years ago we also picked names but then there were so many LOs between my SIL and BIL that I pushed for just buying for them. And now that's all we do

@inthewoods23 do people actually spend that much on their family members? We have always picked names for our siblings/SO's and did an exchange of $25 gift. This year we are actually upping it to $50 but it's going to a donation. I spend about $100 on each set of parents. I would go broke if we did more than that!

@krash_ I don't know! I just feel like I've sometimes gotten 3-4 things from my sister while I'll get her like 2 things that aren't that much (like so far I've bought her a winter hat and blanket scarf that totals $30 or so). We've never discussed a min or max limit for gift giving. DH and I also always label gifts to our family members as from both of us.

I also struggle with what the appropriate amount is for weddings!

lurking - @inthewoods23 so before moving to the east coast, I would spend like, 50 bucks max on a wedding gift off of a registry or maybe more if they're super close friends. I get out here & several people have said to estimate the cost of my plate based on venue and not go lower than that!!! UHM what!?

@inthewoods23 I never spend that much on family. Except for my in-laws but they usually only get $50. I try to keep it around $20.

@chichiphin yeah I don't know where that idea came from! I think it's some weird "rule" with the idea that it "recoups" the cost of the wedding?? IDK *shrug*. At my wedding I had a cousin who gifted $40 while a friend gifted us $300!!!

@emeraldcity1214 with your and other's answers, I feel less bad about spending not too much on other family. I also just never know what to get people.
