Ages (you and SO): 36 (me), 37 (DH)

How many months have you been TTC?: this is our first month!

WAYDTGKU?: just stopped taking the pill after 18 solid years so I'm starting with BBT, CM, and OPK (and studying all the acronyms ;P) Also been taking prenatal vitamins since July.

Tell us about yourself! (Kids, pets, job, hobbies, etc.): Living in a city in the PNW with my DH, some houseplants, and a vacuum robot; we're trying for our first! I'm a professor and author and my favorite hobbies I can make time for these days are cycling, cooking, running, and reading

We also recently bought a house, which is keeping us plenty busy. We have JUST started trying; since we don't plan on telling anyone we know for a while (and all my relatives live on the other side of the country) I'm excited to be joining a community to share the ups and downs of this experience with!

@redpanda5 I love that you consider your robot vacuum a part of the family. Ours doesn't get much love with us working from home because he's too noisy while we are on calls. What kind of cycling do you do? I just got a Peloton yesterday so now I'm an annoying Peloton person that asks everyone about it

@krash_ we consider our robot lawn mower family too

we call him Mo (the little guy from Wall-e). Also because he mows the lawn lol.

@redpanda5 welcome! What vacuum robot do you have? DH and I seriously considered getting one with the black friday deals but didn't go through with it. We have a cat so litter, hair, and dust accumulates at a ridiculous rate.

@inthewoods23 I discovered the robot mowers last year and I really want one. Do you know how they do on hills?

@emeraldcity1214 we have not had any major issues with ours with the hills/slopes on the sides of our house. Our mower is from a lawn mowing service so we don't actually own the robot. It's insured and everything through the company so if someone happens to steal it from our front yard they get notified and can find it by GPS. They also do all the maintenance on it. But anyway, the brand they provide is Robomow for our sized lawn (about 3/4 acre) and Husqvarna for larger yards. It did struggle a little bit this year going uphill from our backyard to front yard but only along the border where we've got a bunch of overgrown trees and weeds. How steep are your hills?

@inthewoods23 you didn't ask me but we have a Neato robot vac. MH did most of the research but I know the main requirement was one that learns your floor plan and uses sensors to map it out rather than one that just bumps around until it thinks it has covered everything.

@krash_ yeah we were looking at the higher end ones with more smarts - primarily the iRobot i7 with the auto dump feature since they were having a black friday deal of $200 off. Maybe next year 🤷‍♀️

They'll never replace a regular vacuum, but it would be nice to have for regular maintenance of dust and all that on our hardwood and tile floors.

@inthewoods23 We live on the base of a mountain so the area has some hills. There is an area in the front yard that has a pretty steep hill but it’s where our front yard drops down really far into the backyard. Our house has a walkout basement and the entrance to the main floor is also flat. So about an entire story of a hill. Then there is a little hill in the backyard. I usually cut the grass and I have to really hard time on both of those hills. I probably should be cutting them with the weed wacker.

@krash_ my robot vacuum doesn’t map the house. It just bumps around. I just make sure I have everything that can be off the floor up. Even the kitchen and dining room chairs. That way, it has the least amount of things to bump into. Ours is also very loud so it doesn’t get used as often as I would like.

@inthewoods23 you didn't ask me either but I'll add my 2 cents to the mix too

-- we have a basic Roomba that doesn't map the house or self-empty but helps us keep up with the massive amounts of cat and dog hair. I try to get it going every morning. I still have to vacuum with my Dyson 2-3 days of week.

@emeraldcity1214 @fameonmain2 that is how our robot lawn mower works. It crisscrosses every which way, sometimes turning left, sometimes right when it reaches a border or bumps into something. The degrees at which it turns then is random too. I almost want to say I think we could get away with a dumb version for a robot vacuum, but our house isn't open concept so it would likely get stuck in certain areas instead of efficiently vacuuming.

Watching some Youtube videos looking at reviews, why do these smart vacuums not turn off their sweeper arm on the carpet?? The amount of programming that goes into efficiently navigating the floors is way more than just telling the arm to stop rotating. On those apps can you set the rooms as having carpet or hardwood/tile? I would think a room marked as having carpet would tell the robot to not use its sweeper arm. The engineer in me sees so many continuous improvement opportunities

No one asked for my opinion either, but that's OK since I don't have one. 🤣But I did learn a bunch about which one we should buy which wasn't a thing I was considering until @inthewoods23 said the words "regular maintenance of dust and all that on our hardwood and tile floors." Where do I sign up!?! MH's quarantine hair is getting ridiculously long, and a lot of it ends up on our floors.

@inthewoods23 The app doesn’t have the option to tell which room has what kind of floor. Although, we have less carpet in the house. So I don’t have to worry about that. I use the regular vacuum upstairs when I get around to vacuuming up there. 😆 What I hate is emptying the darn thing. When I do empty it the van isn’t even all that full but it yells at me to empty it before she will go clean.

Tell us about yourself! (Kids, pets, job, hobbies, etc.): I’m a technical lead for a web application development team. It’s always very busy at work, but I enjoy it...most of the time

. I love the outdoors, baking, and always enjoy reading a good book. We live beside a wooded forest area and a creek, so I love seeing the wildlife there. We recently got a trail cam, and we found that there are at least 10 unique bucks in our little woods!

For pets - We would love to get a puppy soon, but we have been debating on timing. If we aren’t successful, it would be great to have a puppy, but if we finally are successful, a puppy may not be the best with a newborn!

I haven’t been blessed with any kids, but we love spending time wit our niece and nephews. We just hope to some day be more than just the fun aunt and uncle and also have a little one ourselves. It’s been a long time of trying, but I am hopeful that this cycle’s treatment may do the trick. At least - I’m trying to stay hopeful!

2016 - Actively TTC
2018 - started initial testing, including HSG (which gave me a false diagnosis of blocked tubes) followed by a laporoscopy which proved the HSG to be wrong.
2019 - took a break from testing but continued to try naturally
2020 - met with REI Specialist to finalize testing and come up with a treatment plan
late 2020 - first IUI + superovulation cycle

@laura-kay so nice to learn a bit more about you! I’m also 37 and also love spending time with my niece and nephew (1 of each) but definitely hoping to be a mom myself. Like you, we’ve been wanting to get a puppy but the timing is up in the air as we TTC. Hopefully the TTGP community can be of support to you on your journey. What part of the world are you in?

@krash_ I'm an old-fashioned road cyclist; I ride outside until it gets too wet/gross out and then pop my bike on an indoor resistance trainer in front of the TV for the bad-weather months. Still, indoor-cycling solidarity high-five, and hope you're loving the Peloton! and lol, yes, I've been known to anthropomorphize our robot vacuum and occasionally cheer it on when it gets stuck: "you go, little dude! clean under that couch!"

@inthewoods23 we've had a Roomba for years and love it. we also recently got a Braava, which is a kind of mopping version of the Roomba (and *super*-quiet). We don't have pets but heard about the Braava from friends who do since it does such a great job of getting pet hair off hard floors.

@laura-kay your photos are beautiful! and the trail cam sounds so cool! we're way too urban to get any use out of one but my parents have one and the whole extended family find it completely fascinating since we're a bunch of nature geeks; they've had all sorts of animals come through.

@redpanda5 Thanks! I’ll admit - my husband is the one who takes amazing photographs. I can take decent ones, but he is really talented - and there are lots of opportunities here for beautiful photos of scenery and wildlife. If you love nature, you probably would love the wide assortment of birds we get here. It’s surprising how much can live in a small stretch of woods!

Do you live in the city? There definitely is a beauty to the cities as well. We previously lived in the center of a small town, which had its own charm as well.

@laura-kay I was born in Russia but moved to Canada at age of 10; lived there - on the East Coast - for 25 years before moving to the Bay Area in 2018. Been here since and planning to stick around for as long as the job situation is working out, and mine/DH's family don't need our support as they age. I expect we'll eventually tire of the nice weather (LOL... doubt it!) and move back to Canada.

@laura-kay welcome! On the puppy front, have you considered adopting a slightly older dog, like a year or two? You still get the dog, but not the intensive puppy training and such.

@fantasyflyte We are looking at the adoption sites as well. Unfortunately we can’t go to a shelter and just play with the various dogs due to COVID, but we are keeping an eye out!

@acleverusername My husband’s family is from the Carpatho-Rusyn region, but he is third generation American. I love the Christmas caroling songs (and other choral music) from that region. Nebo i zemľa is one of my favorites. I’m Pennsylvania-Dutch myself, but I’m learning some of his family’s culture as well. Do you still have some of the Christmas traditions from your childhood?

(I probably will be pulling out his grandma’s zazvonicky ginger cookie recipe soon....delicious!)
