Switching car seat to forward facing

When we had the infant car seat installed and later on when he outgrew that the convertible car seat installed rear facing, it was installed in the middle of the back seat (we have a medium sedan).  When we turn it to forward facing does it have to go in the middle still or can it go behind one of the seats?

Re: Switching car seat to forward facing

  • The middle is the safest, but we have ours on the doors, because we have 2 carseats.

  • When we switched to the convertible seat - rear facing it wouldn't fit in the middle so we put it behind the passenger seat.
  • Most safety resources will say that the middle is the safest location but you should read the instructions for that paticular carseat and see what fits best for your car. In my vehicle my son is behind the passengar seat because the middle location is too short (seat width) to support the entire base.

  • We had to put ours behind the passenger. I drive a Honda Pilot and when I had his snugride in the middle it would start tipping over because of the seatbelt coming from the roof. I had to move that behind the passenger and didn't even bother trying to try out the convertible in the middle. But yeah the middle is safer if you can use it safely.
  • ds is still rearfacing in a boulevard. The safety tech installed it behind the passenger because dh is so tall it wouldn't fit in the middle (when he puts the seat back)

When he moves to forward facing the tech will install it in the middle.

  • The safest is usually the middle.  I drive an SUV and have a really hard time getting him in and out from the middle, so I have him behind the passenger seat.  As long as it's installed properly, it should be fine anywhere in the back though, as long as it fits properly.

  • Middle is safest if your car seat fits correctly there.

Extended rear-facing is also safest. Check out the links in this old post:

  • I was just going to mention as the pp did that my car seat recommends that the baby stay rear facing until 30lbs or 1 year, whichever comes LAST!

Our local law enforcement also recommend this due to the fact that they are more protected in the case of an accident. The seat blocks the front two seats (driver & passenger) from squishing in on the baby.
