When we had the infant car seat installed and later on when he outgrew that the convertible car seat installed rear facing, it was installed in the middle of the back seat (we have a medium sedan). When we turn it to forward facing does it have to go in the middle still or can it go behind one of the seats?

ds is still rearfacing in a boulevard. The safety tech installed it behind the passenger because dh is so tall it wouldn't fit in the middle (when he puts the seat back)
When he moves to forward facing the tech will install it in the middle.
Middle is safest if your car seat fits correctly there.
Extended rear-facing is also safest. Check out the links in this old post:

I was just going to mention as the pp did that my car seat recommends that the baby stay rear facing until 30lbs or 1 year, whichever comes LAST!
Our local law enforcement also recommend this due to the fact that they are more protected in the case of an accident. The seat blocks the front two seats (driver & passenger) from squishing in on the baby.
