The Dreaded Gestational Diabetes Support

Hi! I thought it would be nice to have a dedicated thread for GD.

Weeks?

Go to Foods?

Blood sugars?

History of GD diagnosis or First time?

Foods you’re missing?

How are you emotionally?

If someone has a better idea of questions, I’m open!

Weeks? 26&4. I did early glucose at 24 weeks as I have had it on one pregnancy before.

Go to Foods? I’ve been eating a lot of chicken/veggies, omelettes, salads, toast in the AM and stevia flavored fruit cups.

Blood sugars? They have been relatively good. I cheated last weekend and went to the Olive Garden - considering I didn’t count carbs and didn’t care, I was only at 126 for my 2 hour post prandials. I haven’t been making a habit of cheating but it was good food.

History of GD diagnosis or First time? I didn’t have it with my first (boy), had it with my second (girl) didn’t have it with my third (boy), and now have it this pregnant. (Girl) I’m thinking it’s a girl thing.

Foods you’re missing? I’m not necessarily missing foods, I’m just missing the flexibility to eat what I want when I want. I’ve been super diligent for the most part.

How are you emotionally? I’ve had a super rough week and I admit first handedly I am an emotional eater. Hubby made brownies tonight and I feel like I am going to indulge in one and not feel guilty about it.

Weeks? I’ll be 28 weeks in the next 12 minutes lol

Go to Foods? String cheese (which we just ran out of), mixed nuts, baby carrots, Greek yogurt.

Blood sugars? Have been ok. If I eat poorly I hit in the 120s for 2 hr post meal.

History of GD diagnosis or First time? So I don’t technically have GD but both this pregnancy and last pregnancy I have “been treated as a diabetic” since I have PCOS and take metformin for that. Last time I never got the GTT and this time I got it at 15 weeks but passed. My doctor isn’t doing another one but I would probably fail if I took it now.

Foods you’re missing? Sweets! Chocolate! The holiday season is going to be hard.

How are you emotionally? It honestly hasn’t been too bad. I’ve mostly adjusted the portions of what I eat and still allow myself to have complex carbs, but eat more protein and veggies. It’s helped me feel a little more normal that I’m not cutting out a ton of foods, just eating less of them. That being said, I’ve been lucky that I can do that and keep my numbers ok, we will see if it stays that way.

  • Weeks? 28+0

    Go to Foods?
Breakfast - 0 Net Carb Bread with peanut butter. I keep a pack of Atkins shakes in my office at work in case I need a pick-me-up or run out of time in the morning.
Snacks - Protein (Nuts, Cheddar Cheese Cubes, String Cheese, Cottage Cheese, etc.) + Carbs (Apple, Grapes, Cherry Tomatoes). Again, I keep Atkins snack bars in my office at work in case I'm jonesing for something chocolate or if need another pick-me-up.

Blood sugars? Good. Fastings stay around 80. Most of my 2-hour checks are under 100 unless I've purposefully eaten something I know I shouldn't. Rarely spike 120+. So far it's been all diet-controlled. I occasionally eat dinner too late through the week to take my sugar after (because I'm already sleeping), but it is what it is. I can't normally eat too much earlier than I do because of when DH gets home from work and I stopped setting alarms and waking myself up to take those sugars a long time ago.

History of GD diagnosis or First time? First-time. I was Dx early in my pregnancy so I've been on the GD train already for 4 months.

Foods you’re missing? Salty snacks, like popcorn and pretzels. I still indulge in sweets on occasion, I just severely limit the portion size and make sure I'm being "good" with everything else for that meal. My biggest cut has been normal bread/buns, but I don't find it to be too much of a loss.

How are you emotionally? Pretty good, in terms of GD. Taking sugars is more annoying than anything else, especially with where I work, but there's only a few months left of it so I'll just deal.

  • @roadspeckle interesting that you didn’t have it for some pregnancies — i assumed i would have it every time if i got pregnant again

@moguippy what’s your fav Greek yogurt? I haven’t found any i like yet hahaha

@WildMagelet i didn’t even think of Atkins! Also lucky your fastings are so low! My fasting is the only number that i could not get regulated without medicine i was so bummed!

    Weeks? 29 on monday

Go to Foods? Peanut butter as a snack, nuts, cheese, then boring stuff!

Blood sugars? My fasting is a PITA stupid body. I’m on metformin for it now. All my other numbers were regulated with diet alone so they’re still good - I’m usually around 110 2 hours after meal etc unless i eat something i know i shouldn’t which I’ve been good about overall

History of GD diagnosis or First time? This is my second pregnancy. I passed my glucose test first pregnancy at 24 weeks without any issues. But i had an 11 lb 1 oz baby. So basically they tested me at 15 weeks this time assuming i actually did have gd last time and didn’t know it — and failed by 3 hour by just enough. Been chugging through the gd life for 14 weeks now.. halfway there!

Foods you’re missing? Sweets honestly. I definitely have a sweet tooth so like above the holidays are gonna be sooo hard!

How are you emotionally? Good now. At first, i was stressing about numbers etc all the time but now I’m in a groove and feel good. To be honest, when I’m busy at work i sometimes forget to check my numbers but i also pack like the exact same thing every day soooooo there’s that haha my numbers are usually the same

Overall I have only gained like 11 lbs this pregnancy so far, and I gained 60 by the end with DS so I’m feeling much better so honestly gd was helpful in that aspect

  • @PinkKathryn12 non-GD: I like regular oikos (blue container). But that has 16 grams of sugar womp womp. GD: I haven’t found one I like so I just grab whatever low sugar one is on sale since it’s just gonna be meh anyway. I only eat strawberry flavor bc I’m picky lol.
Even on metformin, my fasting was constantly just above the threshold in the fist tri but came back down in mid second tri after being able to eat normally once I wasn’t so sick. My OB also says that your hormones change about every 8 weeks so that could have been it as well.

Also, my OB and endocrinologist say I don’t need to test every single time. As long as my trends are good, I can skip some if I’m out (really I just forget all the time). I would ask your dr if that’s ok.  My OB said she really only needs like 4 days a week as long as numbers are good, so if I forget, I don’t stress which definitely helps my anxiety.

One of the things I’m struggling with now is exercise. We used to go on a walk after dinner but now it’s dark and freezing so we usually don’t. I’m not a “workout” person so not walking isn’t helping my cause.
  • @PinkKathryn12 - the few times I've bought yogurt while GD it's been the Oikos Triple Zero (Black Label). Not a lot of flavor choices, but no added sugar.

@moguippy - That’s nice that your OB and Endocrinologist are reasonable about your readings. My MFM team is awesome about that, but my OB office is hit or miss.

I don’t know if I’d have the energy for any real exercise at this point.

  • How many weeks do you take the glucose test? I forget. My doctor hasn’t mentioned it, I am 25 weeks and have my next appointment on Tuesday. I guess I will bring it up then, if she doesn’t. I should remember, this is my 3rd kid lol.

  • @dlbello23 I think it’s usually 28 weeks but some drs do it at 24. And if your dr has concerns they can basically do it at anytime.
  • @PinkKathryn12 I agree. It is very strange.

  • I’m really frustrated this week with my numbers. My fastings have been high between 97-105. Last night I had a low carb (2 tortillas) chicken quesadilla and an apple. 2 hour was 126. I ate a string cheese and drank a big glass of water before bed. Fasting was 106.

  • @roadspeckle i completely understand -- that's how my fasting ALWAYS was for a long time and why I had to go on metformin. Like I would eat straight up turkey breast and nothing else as my "snack" and still have a super high number. I think our bodies are just crazy during this time sometimes
